If a GE top-load washer with Deep Fill is not filling, agitating, spinning, or draining properly, start with the symptom-specific checks below. Deep Fill is a feature, not a single washer model, so controls, error messages, installation requirements, and reset steps vary. Find the model number and use its matching manual before trying a model-specific reset or ordering a part.
What Deep Fill does—and what it does not mean
GE describes Deep Fill as an option that adds water to a wash cycle, whether the washer initially fills by sensing the load or by manual selection. It is intended for special-case loads rather than routine everyday use, and it is not the same feature as Deep Rinse. Whether Deep Fill is available depends on the model and cycle: GE says non-Energy Star models with the option offer it on all wash cycles, while Energy Star models may exclude Normal/Colors. GE also distinguishes Energy Star models made before July 2016, which offered Deep Fill on all cycles, from later applicable models. Confirm the behavior for your washer in its manual. Before troubleshooting, identify the washer
Locate the model number on the appliance and use it to find the correct owner’s manual or GE washer support page. Do this before interpreting a display code, attempting a reset, changing drain-hose installation, or buying a component. The troubleshooting below reflects GE’s guidance for applicable top-load models; it is not a universal procedure for every washer with Deep Fill.
If the washer will not fill or fills slowly
- Confirm the washer has power and that both the hot- and cold-water faucets are fully open.
- Check that the cycle is active rather than paused or stopped.
- If the supply checks are fine, inspect the water-inlet hose screens as described in the model’s manual. GE notes that low water pressure or clogged inlet screens can make some electronic models take too long to fill and time out. Cleanable screens or a supply problem may be the cause; do not assume a part needs replacement.
On some models from 2015 onward, a flashing Fill light or an “H2O SUPPLY” message may indicate a fill timeout and a 3- or 4-minute lockout, depending on the model. Follow the manual for your washer’s indicator and recovery procedure. GE’s no-fill guidance explains these checks.

If the washer fills but does not agitate
First check the breaker or fuse, outlet and plug, lid closure, and whether the cycle is paused or in a soak stage. On newer top-load models, GE says the washer may take about 20 to 30 seconds after filling stops to sense the load and engage the drive.
Some models have a motor reset procedure: unplug the washer for one minute, reconnect it, then lift and lower the lid six times within 12 seconds. The first lift must begin within 30 seconds of reconnecting, and each lift must be high enough to interrupt the lid sensor. This procedure is model-dependent; use it only if the owner’s manual for your washer specifies it. If the applicable checks do not resolve the symptom, GE says service may be required. If the washer will not spin
Check for a power interruption, an open lid, an unbalanced load, or a control knob that is not positioned correctly. Some full-size top-load washers pause for up to three minutes between cycles; allow that normal pause to finish before treating it as a fault.
On applicable models from 2015 onward, a flashing Spin light or “bALAnCINg” message can mean the laundry needs to be redistributed. Follow the model’s instructions to resume the cycle or select Drain & Spin. A dE or E2 code can indicate that the lid was opened and the washer paused. Display meanings and control behavior vary by model, so consult its manual rather than applying a code definition universally. If the washer will not drain
Allow for a normal pause between cycles, then inspect the drain hose for kinks or a blockage. On certain models from 2015 onward, a flashing Rinse light or scrolling “Po” can indicate that draining took too long. Use the owner’s manual for model-specific checks, and seek service if basic troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. See the GE washer FAQ for no-drain guidance.

A drain hose installed too low can siphon water out of the tub as the washer fills. GE advises raising the hose to 30 inches, but confirm the required height and installation method in the installation instructions for your exact model before changing the setup. If the washer agitates but does not fill
GE identifies a water-level pressure-switch problem as a likely cause and provides model-dependent reset steps. Treat this as a possible repair diagnosis, not a reason to order a pressure switch based on the symptom alone. Check the matching manual and arrange service if its documented checks do not help. When to contact GE or arrange service
Stop at the model-specific basic checks if the symptom persists, the washer continues to display an unresolved fault, or a possible component problem requires diagnosis. Use GE’s support page to locate model-specific support, parts, or repair service. Verify compatibility by model number before buying any replacement part.
