How a Fractal Vise Clamps Irregular Shapes

A fractal vise uses movable jaw sections to make multiple contact points around some irregular workpieces. Learn how the mechanism works, how formats differ and what its limits are.

A fractal vise uses linked, movable sections in its jaws to follow parts of an uneven outline as the jaws close. That can create contact at several points around an awkward workpiece, unlike two flat jaws that meet it only where their faces happen to touch. The name covers different tools, however: a compact desktop vise, replacement jaws and CNC clamps are not interchangeable, and no design is guaranteed to hold every shape safely.

How a fractal vise grips an irregular shape

“Fractal” refers to a repeated arrangement of smaller jaw elements. In one 2025 prototype described in the International Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics Research, the contact surface consists of successively smaller circular arcs. Mobile dovetail joints let those arcs pivot to conform to a workpiece contour, while a lead screw and crank move the assembly. [Read the 2025 prototype study]

MetMo describes a related principle for its own product: the jaw sections move around a workpiece to grip it at multiple points. That is a manufacturer’s description of its vise, not a universal specification for every product called a fractal vise. Multiple contact points can help when a part has curves or an irregular outline, but they do not prove that the grip will resist any machining force or suit any material.

What “fractal vise” can mean in practice

The format matters as much as the jaw mechanism. These examples serve different workholding situations; they are not a ranked list or evidence that one is best for every task.

MetMo Fractal Vise Compact desktop vise for difficult parts, models, 3D prints, watches, jewellery and tools, according to the manufacturer. MetMo gives a weight of 485 g for the specific product page consulted. It says the vise can sit in a standard or machine vise and has reversible jaws for clamping from the inside. These are manufacturer statements, not independent verification. MetMo product page
Genmitsu GA-FV-120 Adjustable CNC clamp for irregular workpieces, listed by SainSmart. The seller states a 120 mm clamping range, a 100-degree adjustable jaw, and screw or pressure-plate fixation. These are seller-listed specifications, not independently verified measurements. SainSmart product listing
Lindsay Frac Vise / Morph Vise Maker-listed vise systems and compatible arrangements. The maker lists special screw pins and replaceable brass, aluminum and plastic inserts. Lindsay product page

A compact desktop vise is not automatically a substitute for a full-size machinist’s vise. Likewise, a CNC clamp’s listed range does not establish suitability for every part within that span: geometry, mounting, workpiece material and the forces involved still matter.

Choose the jaw face for the workpiece

MetMo lists several jaw options for its vise. The descriptions below are the maker’s intended-use guidance, not the results of independent comparative tests. Check compatibility and current options with the manufacturer before buying.

Rank #2
IRWIN Tools Woodworker's Vise, 6 1/2", 226361
  • Toe-in toward top jaws helps ensure firm grip on workpiece
  • Square body seating for easy under-bench mounting
  • Provision for installing wooden cheeks to protect work pieces
  • 4-1/2" jaw capacity perfect for light duty woodworking tasks
  • Crated of forged iron for long-lasting durability
  • Fractal jaws: articulated martensitic stainless-steel jaws intended to follow difficult contours.
  • Nylon jaws: intended to apply gentler pressure to painted models.
  • Silicone-fronted jaws: intended for polished or delicate work.
  • Brass-faced parallel jaws: intended for square bar or repeatable setups.

For a delicate finish, a softer face may help protect the surface, but the right choice depends on the part and the hold required. A parallel jaw face may suit regular stock or repeatable positioning better than a contour-following face. The maker’s descriptions do not establish a safe clamping force for a particular job. What the published test does—and does not—show

The 2025 journal study concerns a prototype and a specific analysis, not a commercial product rating. It describes a 10 N ABS test component and calculates a minimum clamping force of 50 N using an assumed friction coefficient of 0.2. Those figures apply to that component and those assumptions; they are not a general capacity or safe-load rating for fractal vises. Read the study and its setup.

The available evidence supports the mechanism’s potential to contact some irregular contours at several points. It does not establish that all fractal vise designs hold all shapes, materials or machining loads securely. For a real setup, confirm the workpiece dimensions and mounting arrangement, then assess whether the selected jaws can retain the part without damaging it or allowing it to shift.

How to decide whether one fits your setup

  • Match the format to the machine and task: choose between a freestanding desktop vise, jaws used with an existing vise, or a clamp designed for CNC workholding.
  • Check actual geometry and size: compare the part’s dimensions and contour with the product’s stated range and jaw arrangement. Do not infer a universal capacity from the word “fractal.”
  • Consider surface protection and repeatability: select jaw material and face shape for the workpiece, rather than assuming articulated jaws are always the right choice.
  • Separate seller claims from demonstrated performance: product pages describe intended uses and specifications; the cited experimental account is a test of one prototype, not validation of the commercial models above.
