The available plans differ—especially at the base joints—so use one plan’s dimensions and materials as a set rather than combining parts from several designs.
Measure the folded flag before choosing dimensions
Published dimensions are useful starting points, not universal specifications. This Old House describes a typical folded coffin flag as 11 inches high by 22 inches wide. In a separate build, woodworker Bruce Kieffer tested mockups and settled on an interior measuring 21.5 inches across the base and 10.75 inches from the base to the peak. Those figures reflect different designs; they should not be combined as if they described the same case.
Measure your folded flag and compare it with the interior dimensions of the specific plan you intend to follow. If fit is uncertain, make a full-size mockup from scrap before cutting the finished stock. Kieffer reports that increasing his first mockup by half an inch proved too large, while a quarter-inch increase worked for his flag and design.
Compare the plans before committing to a build

The WOOD Magazine plan page says the plan appeared in WOOD Issue 144, September 2002, and was updated January 16, 2024. This Old House’s guide by Nathan Gilbert was updated June 3, 2026; the Home Depot guide was last updated September 7, 2023. Choose based on the fit you need, the cuts and tools you can manage, the glazing material you prefer, and where the case will be displayed.

Understand the base joint and cut difficulty
Base between the sides
WOOD Magazine’s design fits the base between the case sides. That layout avoids the long, narrow 22.5-degree miters that can be awkward to cut and handle, while retaining 45-degree miters around the design. It is a practical choice if you want to avoid that particular base-cutting challenge.
Steeply mitered base
Other builds use steep base miters. A tenoning jig is one documented way to hold work for these cuts, as discussed in the Woodworker’s Journal build and listed among the tools for the This Old House design. Use a jig and saw setup appropriate to your chosen plan; a jig does not make dimensions or construction steps interchangeable between designs.

Plan materials and tools around one design
For Nathan Gilbert’s This Old House design, the listed materials are half-inch plywood, 1×6 red oak boards, 220-grit sandpaper, lacquer, pin nails, sheet glass, and wood glue. Its listed tools are a carpenter square, compact router with chamfer bit, compound miter saw, glass cutter, pin nailer, table saw, and tenon jig.
That guide calls for ripping the 1×6 stock to 4 inches while leaving the base at full thickness for stability and visual weight. It also recommends finishing the interior before assembly, when it is easier to reach. These are details of that design, not universal steps for every flag case.

The Home Depot guide instead specifies a 1 × 4 × 8 ft common board, plywood, and polycarbonate. WOOD Magazine and Woodworker’s Journal describe different construction approaches. Follow the bill of materials and sequence for the plan you select rather than borrowing a dimension, part, or cut from another guide without checking the fit.

In the This Old House design, glass fitted too tightly can crack as wood expands with humidity. The guide recommends cutting the glass slightly smaller than the plywood back so it has clearance. That design calls for sheet glass and a glass cutter; the Home Depot project uses polycarbonate instead. Choose the glazing specified by your plan and follow its method for cutting and retaining it.

Build in a useful order
- Choose one plan and confirm its fit. Measure the folded flag against that plan’s stated interior dimensions. Make a scrap mockup if you are unsure whether the flag will fit.
- Check the cut and tool requirements. Confirm that your saw, holding setup, router or other shaping tools, and glazing-cutting tools match the selected design—particularly if it calls for steep miters.
- Prepare the parts and interior finish as specified. For the This Old House design, the guide says to rip the 1×6 stock to 4 inches and finish the interior before assembly.
- Assemble and glaze using that plan’s details. Keep the base-joint layout and glazing method consistent with the chosen design; do not substitute another plan’s dimensions or parts without rechecking them.
- Install the flag and close the back. Where the design uses a removable, screw-fastened back, that access allows the flag to be placed inside without permanently sealing it in.
- Set or mount the case as designed. WOOD Magazine describes tabletop or shelf placement and wall mounting with bevel-edge cleats; Home Depot describes shelf, desk, or wall display.
