Start by protecting the screw head: use a correctly fitting hand screwdriver with firm pressure, then try penetrating oil. If the drive is still intact but the screw will not turn, a manual impact screwdriver may help. For a stripped or broken head, use a screw extractor according to its kit instructions. Drilling and heat are more invasive options and need extra care.
Choose a method based on the screw’s condition
Check whether the head is intact, stripped or broken before escalating. Also consider whether the surrounding material could be damaged by impact, drilling or heat. These methods are practical options, not a tested ranking of success rates.

1. Fit the screwdriver carefully
Choose a tip that fully engages the screw’s drive. Press firmly into the head as you turn. If the driver slips, stop rather than continuing to round out the drive; a damaged head can make later removal harder.
2. Apply penetrating oil
For rust-bound threads, apply penetrating oil to the joint and allow it time to work before trying again. RS recommends penetrating oil as an initial measure, while WD-40 describes its Specialist Penetrant as intended for seized screws and rusted-bonded parts. These sources establish no universal soak time or guarantee of success, so follow the product label rather than relying on a fixed duration.

3. Use a manual impact screwdriver if the drive is intact
A manual impact screwdriver converts a hammer blow into rotary motion. Wera describes its impact driver as a tool for loosening stuck screws when ordinary manual force is insufficient. Select a bit that fits the drive, seat it securely and use controlled strikes; this method is not suited to a stripped or broken head.
4. Use an extractor for a stripped or broken head
An extractor is intended for a damaged or broken screw, rather than an intact drive that merely needs more turning force. Follow the exact instructions for your kit: pilot-hole sizes and procedures vary. BLACK+DECKER’s guidance says to drill the specified pilot hole, insert the extractor and turn it to the left. Green Chem’s left-hand set instructions also describe counterclockwise extraction.

Heat
Heat is not safe for every assembly. Before applying it, remove flammable penetrant and consider nearby plastic, rubber or other heat-sensitive materials. If you cannot protect surrounding parts, do not treat heat as a routine next step.

When to stop
- The driver slips or further damages the screw head.
- You cannot keep a drill aligned with the fastener or protect the surrounding material.
- The extractor instructions do not match the tool or screw you are working with.
