For a more polished-looking room, start with one substantial plant as a focal point, then add smaller plants with complementary leaf shapes and textures. Monstera, fiddle-leaf fig, bird of paradise, rubber plant and calathea each bring a different effect—but the right choice depends on the room’s light and conditions, not just its appearance.

What makes houseplants look high end?

“High end” is a styling impression, not a botanical quality. Large, architectural leaves can give a room a clear focal point; a considered mix of foliage shapes and textures makes a grouping feel intentional. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recognizes large-leaved architectural plants as suitable for a modern look and notes that similar textures unify a display, while a few contrasts keep it from feeling monotonous. Its design guidance, adapted from The RHS Practical Houseplant Book, puts the balance this way: “Plants with light, feathery foliage carry less visual weight than those with denser, solid leaves; so use more in a display if you want the textures to appear balanced.” RHS design guidance.

Try one larger plant beside a sofa, in an open corner, or near a bright window, then group two or three smaller plants where they can share suitable conditions. Choose pots that relate in color or material, and let the foliage provide some variation. A plant cannot guarantee a luxurious look; healthy growth and a placement that suits the room do more than a fashionable name.

Five houseplants for a more considered room

1. Monstera: a sculptural focal point

Monstera, often called Swiss cheese plant, is a familiar houseplant with distinctive split foliage that reads as bold and architectural. The RHS describes it as a quintessential houseplant back in fashion and includes it among options for sunny rooms. Give it a position that matches its light needs rather than treating every indoor spot as suitable. RHS Monstera growing guide.

2. Fiddle-leaf fig: glossy, oversized leaves

Fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) brings large, glossy, fiddle-shaped leaves to a bright room. The RHS says its leaves can reach up to 45 cm long and recommends full or filtered light under glass. Its generous foliage works well as a single statement plant, provided the available light suits it. RHS Ficus lyrata profile.

3. Bird of paradise: a substantial sunny-room plant

Bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae) has an unmistakably tropical presence and needs room to grow. The RHS describes it as reaching at least 1.5 m tall and 1 m wide over time, making it better suited to a large, bright room or conservatory than a cramped corner. It needs bright light, warmth and regular seasonal care. Do not confuse it with Strelitzia nicolai, which the RHS says can grow up to 10 m and is too large for most homes in the long term. 4. Rubber plant: broad-leaved simplicity

Rubber plant (Ficus elastica) is a broad-leaved foliage option for a room that needs a strong green shape without patterned leaves. The RHS lists it among houseplant choices. Its eventual size and performance depend on the plant and its growing conditions, so choose one that fits the space you have rather than assuming it will stay at its shop size. RHS houseplant selection guidance.

5. Calathea: patterned foliage for contrast

Calatheas, now often classified in the genus Goeppertia, bring bold patterns and color rather than oversized, solid leaves. They can provide contrast alongside simpler foliage, but need warm, humid conditions and bright indirect light. The RHS cautions against placing soft-leaved plants such as calatheas in sunny spots. Choose plants for the room, not just the look

Before bringing a plant home, consider its light, temperature, water and humidity needs. A sunny windowsill can suit some plants, but strong summer sun through glass can scorch susceptible foliage. The RHS recommends Monstera and Ficus examples for sunny rooms while advising against sunny placement for soft-leaved plants such as calatheas. Check the requirements for the particular plant and the conditions in your home. RHS houseplant selection guidance and RHS houseplant care guidance.

  • For a bright room: Consider Monstera, fiddle-leaf fig or bird of paradise, matching the specific plant’s light requirements.
  • For patterned foliage: Consider calathea where you can provide warmth, humidity and bright indirect light.
  • For a smaller or uncertain space: Check the plant’s likely footprint and growth needs before choosing a large focal plant.
  • For a composed group: Combine related foliage textures with one or two contrasts, rather than making every plant compete for attention.

Keep the display healthy as it grows

Use a pot that drains

Keep the plant in a growing pot with drainage holes. If you want the look of a decorative vessel without drainage, use it as a cachepot: set the functional pot inside and remove it for watering as needed. When potting up, RHS guidance recommends choosing a pot 5–10 cm wider than the current one. RHS houseplant care guidance.

Check the compost before watering

Do not water by a fixed calendar. Check the compost and water when its surface becomes dry, following the needs of the plant and its conditions. A schedule that works in one room or season may not suit another. RHS houseplant care guidance.
