Exploring Peat Soil: What It Is and Which Plants Grow Well in It

Peat soil holds moisture and organic matter, but it is not automatically acidic or right for every plant. Learn which acid-loving choices to consider and what to check first.

Peat soil is high in organic matter and moisture, but those qualities alone do not make it suitable for every plant. Blueberries, heathers, camellias and rhododendrons are familiar acid-loving choices; before planting or trying to change a bed, check its actual pH and assess drainage and other site conditions.

What is peat soil?

Peat is partially decomposed plant material that accumulates in bogs and similar wetland environments. Because low-oxygen conditions slow decomposition, this material builds up over long periods. The University of Saskatchewan’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources describes peat or peat moss as “the partially decomposed remains of various types of bog-based plants” in its guide Peat and Peat Alternatives.

“Peat soil” describes a garden soil type, while peat itself is the organic material. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) characterizes peat soils as very high in organic matter and moisture. That describes important soil properties, not a guarantee of high plant nutrition or suitability for a particular species.

Is peat soil acidic?

Not necessarily. “Peat” is not a pH reading, so do not assume that a soil described as peat has the acidity a particular plant needs. The RHS classifies soil below pH 7 as acidic and notes that pH 5–6 may suit ericaceous plants. The right target depends on the plant, so check its growing guidance rather than applying one range to every acid-loving species.

Miracle-Gro Sphagnum Peat Moss, 8 qt. (2-Pack)
  • MOISTURE RETENTION: Miracle-Gro Sphagnum Peat Moss for plants retains moisture and nutrients, and helps promote strong root development
  • ENRICHED FORMULA: This growing media is enriched with Miracle-Gro plant food
  • WHERE TO USE: Use this gardening product with all types of indoor and outdor container plants; it can also be used to blend your own seed starting mix and improve the native garden soil your in-ground garden beds

Before adding any acidifying material, test the bed. The RHS says simple soil pH kits are widely available and recommends checking pH first. A result can help guide your next step, but it does not tell you whether drainage, exposure or available space also suits the plant.

Which plants grow well in peat soil?

Blueberries, heathers, camellias and rhododendrons are examples of ericaceous, acid-loving plants identified by the RHS. Their shared preference for acidic conditions does not mean they have identical growing needs, or that every peat soil is a good planting site.

  • 【Does not compact】By introducing peat moss to any compact material, the compaction problem is solved and makes the growing mix drain better
  • 【Acidic】PH from 3.5 to 6 on average, It is very suitable for acid-craving plants such as strawberries, blueberries
  • 【Perfect for Carnivorous Plants】It's good for adding to acid-loving plants such as using in growing carnivorous plants
  • 【Resealable Package】Packaged in a Heavy Duty resealable pouch designed for long term storage. Pour the necessary quantity with ease and store the rest for future use
Plant What the RHS guidance establishes What to check before planting
Blueberries An ericaceous, acid-loving example Measured soil pH, drainage, climate, space and the chosen cultivar’s guidance
Heathers An ericaceous, acid-loving example Measured soil pH and the selected plant’s site and care requirements
Camellias An ericaceous, acid-loving example Measured soil pH, drainage, exposure and the selected plant’s requirements
Rhododendrons An ericaceous, acid-loving example Measured soil pH, available space and the selected plant’s site requirements

Use the table as a starting point, not a planting prescription. Compare the pH reading with reliable guidance for the specific plant or cultivar, then consider moisture, drainage, exposure and room to grow.

Can you add peat to make soil more acidic?

The RHS no longer recommends peat as an acidifying material; it describes sulphur as the most common acidifier. Test the soil first and follow suitable guidance for the plant and site before using any amendment. Peat’s high organic matter and moisture content do not make it an appropriate shortcut for correcting pH.

What should container gardeners use?

If you are growing an acid-loving plant in a container, a peat-free ericaceous growing medium may be suitable. Check that the bag is labelled both peat-free and for the plant you intend to grow. There is no single brand or universal formula established here, so use the product label alongside the plant’s specific growing guidance.

Why does peat-free gardening matter?

Peatlands store carbon, support wildlife and help mitigate flooding, according to the RHS. Its live advice page, accessed in 2026, says that forming 10 cm of peat in a peat bog takes 100 years. The RHS also reports that peatlands store over twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined, while covering a land area ten times smaller than the forests in that comparison. These are RHS-reported figures, not independent measurements presented here.

  • Made from premium grade sphagnum peat moss from Canadian bogs

The RHS says extraction exposes stored carbon and can release carbon dioxide, while damaging important habitat. It recommends choosing peat-free compost and plants grown without peat where available. The RHS stopped selling peat-based compost in 2019. Its policy, updated 3 December 2025, says it adopted a “no new peat” policy across most operations from 1 January 2026, with exceptions including specified peat-starter plants at shows until 2028. These dates describe RHS policy, not a legal requirement for all gardeners.

The RHS policy page says there is no government definition of “peat-free” for consumers. A UK government announcement described a plan to ban retail sales of horticultural peat in England, but that announcement alone does not establish whether such a measure is now in force. Check current official guidance before treating it as law.
