Termite treatment should start with an inspection, not an assumption that a home needs tent fumigation. A qualified provider should identify the pest, locate affected areas, and explain which treatment fits the structure. Before hiring, compare written proposals for the treatment method, work scope, preparation and re-entry instructions, follow-up, and guarantee terms.

How can you tell whether you have termites?

Termites often stay hidden in soil, mud tubes, or the wood they tunnel through. An infestation may first become noticeable through a swarm or damage rather than visible insects. EPA recommends probing exposed wood for hollow spots and notes that termite wings are roughly equal in length, unlike the unequal-length wings of ants. These signs are clues, not a definitive diagnosis; have a professional confirm the pest and extent of activity before treatment. EPA termite identification and control guidance

Prevention can reduce conditions that attract termites, but it does not replace an inspection when you see signs of activity. EPA recommends maintaining drainage and gutters, repairing leaks, filling openings around foundations and utility lines, keeping vents clear, moving wood debris and firewood away from the home, and inspecting periodically. EPA termite identification and control guidance

What termite treatments may a provider propose?

EPA recognizes several treatment categories. The appropriate option depends on the inspection findings, structure, product label, and professional assessment—not on a single method being right for every home.

#1 Best Overall
Spectracide Terminate Termite Detection & Killing Stakes, 15 Count
  • Two termite products IN one: pop-up indicators detect termite activity, and the stakes kill foraging termites
  • Installs IN minutes: place stakes in the ground 2 to 3 feet away from your home and no more than 10 feet apart
  • Pop-up indicator: check the stakes for termite activity when the pop-up indicator is seen

Treatment category What to ask
Soil-applied termiticide Which areas will be treated, and what product label supports the application?
Termite bait stations Where will stations be placed, how will they be monitored, and what follow-up is included? Baits are a treatment category, not a recommendation for a particular brand or do-it-yourself use.
Treated building materials Which materials or parts of the structure are included in the proposed work?
Wood treatment Which wood is affected, and what does the treatment cover?
Structural fumigation Why is fumigation appropriate for this property, what preparation is required, and how will formal clearance be confirmed?

EPA describes soil-applied barrier treatment as a common approach, but warns that improper application can contaminate a home or drinking-water well and may fail to protect the structure. Many termiticide applications require a trained professional. Ask the provider to identify the treatment and explain its label basis. EPA termite identification and control guidance

Do you need tent fumigation for termites?

Not necessarily. Fumigation is one possible treatment, not the default for every termite problem. The inspection should establish the pest and affected areas, and the provider should explain why the proposed method suits the structure. If a company recommends fumigation, ask what finding supports it and whether other treatment categories are appropriate for the identified problem.

  • Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations give ongoing structural protection through colony elimination; however, conditions such as competing insects, floods, the presence of alternative food sources, and cold weather may alter complete structural protection

What should you verify before hiring a termite-control company?

  1. Check state licensing. EPA advises consumers to verify that the firm is licensed by the state. Rules vary by state, so confirm current requirements with your state regulator. EPA termite identification and control guidance
  2. Ask who will perform the work. Find out whether the person applying the treatment is a certified or licensed applicator or technician, and ask what qualifications apply to the proposed work. EPA termite identification and control guidance
  3. Request the product label and a written, property-specific proposal. The proposal should identify inspection findings, the pest, treatment method, areas included, and work scope. Read the product label and ask how it applies to the planned treatment.
  4. Get preparation and re-entry instructions in writing. Ask what occupants and pets must do, what the exact re-entry conditions are, and whom to contact with questions. Follow the current product label and provider’s written directions.
  5. Review follow-up and guarantee terms. Ask how inspections or monitoring work, whether annual inspections cost extra, what exclusions apply, and whether structural damage is covered if treatment fails.

Be cautious of pressure to sign immediately, claims of a secret formula, or false claims of government endorsement. EPA’s consumer guidance says termite-work guarantees commonly run one to five years; that is a general range, not a promise about any company or contract. The guarantee is only as reliable as the company offering it, so read the actual terms. EPA guidance on choosing a pest-control company

How should you compare termite-treatment proposals?

Compare proposals on the same practical points rather than choosing by the headline price alone. A local cost figure is not established here; ask providers for written, property-specific quotes and clarify any fees before signing.

What should you know about residential structural fumigation?

In an EPA announcement dated July 30, 2024, the agency described sulfuryl fluoride as the only fumigant registered for residential structural use in that announcement and noted additional label safety measures, including longer active and passive aeration times. Sulfuryl fluoride is a restricted-use pesticide: EPA says it may be used only by a certified applicator or someone under that applicator’s direct supervision. Check the current label and the provider’s qualifications for any proposed fumigation. EPA’s July 30, 2024 sulfuryl fluoride announcement

Fumigation requires containing gas in the structure. Occupants and pets must follow the provider’s preparation and evacuation instructions. After treatment, the structure is aerated; re-entry must wait for formal clearance rather than a guessed number of hours or days. EPA says a certified operator, or a person under the operator’s supervision, verifies a reading of 1 ppm or less in the breathing zones of each room using a portable clearance device. Sulfuryl fluoride is odorless and colorless, so smell is not a reliable safety test. EPA guidance on sulfuryl fluoride clearance devices
