For the most flexible documented setup, start with Makita; choose Milwaukee if you prioritize a higher published torque rating or a separate high-speed model; consider DEWALT if its battery platform and drive-size options suit your shop. This is an editorial ranking of the cordless ratchet options verified here—not a controlled test or an exhaustive ranking of every major brand. The manufacturers’ published figures describe different models and test conditions, so they do not establish which brand is fastest or strongest in real use.
How this ranking works
The order reflects how useful each brand’s documented options are as a starting point for choosing a cordless ratchet wrench. It considers model variety, disclosed features, drive-size flexibility, and battery-platform fit. DEWALT’s lower position reflects less comparable numerical detail in the cited product information, not evidence that its tools perform worse.
- Access and versatility: head profile, drive sizes, and manual operation where specified.
- Fastening options: manufacturer-published torque and speed, kept tied to the exact model.
- Platform fit: whether the tool belongs to a battery system you already use, and whether the cited listing is tool-only.
No standardized, same-condition test or reliability comparison is established here. Published torque and rpm figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; rpm figures should not be read as speed under load.
Ranked: the documented cordless ratchet options
| Rank | Brand and models | What stands out | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | DEWALT 12V MAX and 20V MAX XR sealed-head ratchets, including DCF520B | The category covers 12V MAX brushless 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch sealed-head options and a 20V MAX XR brushless sealed-head product. The DCF520B product page identifies 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drive options. | Buyers who want to investigate a ratchet within DEWALT’s 12V MAX or 20V MAX battery systems. | The cited material does not provide a complete set of comparable numerical specifications. The category’s 20V product description and the DCF520B page describe different drive-size details; check the exact model and listing rather than assuming those details apply to every DEWALT ratchet. |
| 2 | Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3/8-inch Ratchet 2557-20 and M12 FUEL 3/8-inch High Speed Ratchet 2567-20 | Milwaukee lists up to 55 ft-lb maximum torque and 200 rpm for the 2557-20. The separate 2567-20 is listed at up to 450 rpm. Milwaukee describes the 2557-20 as having a low-profile head, brushless motor, and M12 battery compatibility. | Buyers who want to compare a torque-focused published specification with a distinct high-speed model, particularly if they use M12 batteries. | The 55 ft-lb and 200 rpm figures apply to model 2557-20; the up-to-450-rpm claim applies to model 2567-20. Do not combine them as if they describe one tool. |
| 1 | Makita 18V LXT XRW01Z and 12V max CXT RW01Z | Both models have interchangeable 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch anvils. Makita publishes up to 35 ft-lb maximum torque and variable speed from 0 to 800 rpm for these models. The XRW01Z has a low-profile design and can be used manually when its motor is not engaged. | Buyers who value two drive sizes in one tool or are already invested in the LXT or CXT battery platform. | The XRW01Z is listed tool-only. Makita’s RW01Z page specifies that its battery and charger are not included. Check the exact listing for package contents. |
1. Makita: the most versatile documented drive setup
Makita takes the top spot for the breadth of useful features documented across its two ratchet models, not for a proven performance lead. The XRW01Z is an 18V LXT tool; the RW01Z is a 12V max CXT model. Each accepts interchangeable 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch anvils, a practical advantage if a job regularly moves between those fastener sizes.

Makita publishes up to 35 ft-lb maximum torque and variable 0–800 rpm for the XRW01Z. The RW01Z page lists the same torque and speed claims. Those are maker specifications, not results from a shared test against Milwaukee or DEWALT. On the XRW01Z, Makita also describes a low-profile design and manual use when the motor is disengaged. That manual function can help when positioning or turning a fastener without power, but it does not make the tool a calibrated torque wrench.
Before buying, confirm which battery platform you own and whether the listing includes batteries and a charger. Makita’s XRW01Z is tool-only, and the RW01Z product page says its battery and charger are not included.
Rank #2
- RECESSED FORWARD - BACKWARD SWITCH on the back of the head prevents you from accidental actuations in the middle of an important job
- LOW PROFILE HEAD DESIGN allows you to work in an engine bay without issue
- ONBOARD FUEL GAUGE: Lights on the side of the unit will let you know how much power you have left
- LED LIGHTING on the front of the unit allows you to see your job in dimly lit conditions
- REDLINK INTELLIGENCE: A smart chip in this unit allows it to communicate with the M12 battery plugged into it. This prevents it from receiving too much power and overheating, saving it from unnecessary damage
2. Milwaukee: choose between a published torque figure and a separate speed model
Milwaukee’s documented M12 lineup makes the model distinction especially important. The M12 FUEL 2557-20 is listed at up to 55 ft-lb maximum torque and 200 rpm. Milwaukee describes that model as brushless, with a low-profile head and M12 battery compatibility. The separate M12 FUEL High Speed Ratchet 2567-20 is listed at up to 450 rpm.
Those specifications make Milwaukee worth considering if you already use M12 batteries or want to compare distinct tool priorities. They do not show that the 2567-20 also has the 2557-20’s torque rating, nor do the rpm claims establish how quickly either model turns a fastener under load. For tight automotive access, assess the exact head and body clearance against the space you need to reach; a low-profile description alone does not establish that a tool will fit every location.
Rank #3
- Interchangeable anvil design provides the ability to quickly swap between 3/8" and 1/2" square drives
- Brushless motor delivers 75 ft-lbs of max torque and 0-300 no-load RPM

- Variable speed trigger helps optimize user speed and control based on application
3. DEWALT: a relevant platform choice, with fewer comparable figures here
DEWALT’s cordless ratchet category includes both 12V MAX and 20V MAX XR brushless sealed-head options. The cited category describes a 12V MAX kit in 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch drives, as well as a 20V MAX XR product in 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch drives. The DCF520B product page, however, identifies 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch drive options. Because those descriptions do not line up as a single model specification, verify the model number and drive size on the particular listing you intend to buy.
The cited DEWALT information does not supply a full set of comparable torque and speed numbers. That limits a spec-by-spec comparison; it is not proof of lower power, speed, reliability, or value. If you already own DEWALT batteries, confirm compatibility with the exact ratchet and compare its head profile, reach, controls, and package contents before deciding.

What to compare before buying a cordless ratchet wrench
Drive size, head profile, and reach
Choose a drive size that matches the sockets and fasteners you use most. A 1/4-inch drive can suit smaller fasteners and restricted spaces; a 3/8-inch drive is a common middle ground for automotive work; a 1/2-inch drive may suit larger sockets. These are selection considerations, not a claim that one drive size is universally better. Check the actual tool’s head dimensions, length, and clearance against the access problem you face.
Torque and speed claims
Maximum torque and rpm figures need their model names and manufacturer attribution attached. The Milwaukee 2557-20’s up-to-55-ft-lb maximum torque and 200-rpm rating are not directly comparable to Makita’s up-to-35-ft-lb and variable 0–800-rpm claims as a measure of real-world fastening performance. The manufacturers do not provide a shared test here, and no independent same-condition results are established. Maximum, breakaway, and tightening torque are different measures; do not treat them as interchangeable.
Best Value
- Powerful 12-volt motor: Delivers up to 35 ft-lbs of torque.
- The kit includes one M12 battery, a 30-minute charger, and carrying case.
- On-board fuel gauge: Helps you monitor the charge precisely for less downtime on the job.
- Built-in LED light: Illuminates work surfaces in dark locations.
- Superior fastening speed: Produces 250 RPM, with variable-speed trigger for greater control.
Battery platform and package
If you already own compatible batteries and chargers, that system may make the most practical choice even if another tool looks stronger on paper. Confirm whether the exact product is a bare tool or a kit: the Makita XRW01Z is tool-only, and Makita specifies that the RW01Z battery and charger are not included. Check the individual listing for the Milwaukee or DEWALT package you are considering rather than assuming accessories are included.
Use a torque wrench for final torque
A cordless ratchet is useful for running fasteners on and off; its published maximum torque rating does not make it a calibrated torque wrench. When a vehicle or component specifies a tightening torque, use an appropriate torque wrench for the final tightening step.
