Every Major Chainsaw Brand Ranked Worst to Best? What the Evidence Actually Supports

Current model tests and survey-based reliability data do not establish a worst-to-best chainsaw brand ranking. Compare specific saws against your workload, power needs and service requirements.

There is no defensible worst-to-best ranking of every major chainsaw brand in the available evidence. Current testing covers individual gas, battery and electric models, while the available reliability information is based on consumer surveys and does not provide comparable brand scores. For a construction crew, homeowner or firewood cutter, the useful comparison is between specific saws matched to the job—not brand names arranged in a universal league table.

Why a universal brand ranking would be misleading

A chainsaw brand can sell products for very different workloads and power systems. A strong result for one model does not establish that every saw from that brand is better than every saw from another. Cutting performance and handling are also different from long-term reliability and owner satisfaction.

Consumer Reports’ July 31, 2026 overview says its ratings include 60 gas, battery and electric models and discusses performance and handling. Its examples include Stihl, ECHO, Husqvarna, Milwaukee, Kobalt, EGO, Ryobi and DeWALT. That is a count of tested models—not a count of brands and not a brand ranking. Consumer Reports separately describes its brand reliability and satisfaction ratings as based on member surveys. The accessible summary does not provide sample size, scores or complete results, so it cannot support a reliable ordering of those brands.

This is a desk-based comparison, not a hands-on test. The evidence names Craftsman, DeWalt, Ego, Echo, Jonsered, Husqvarna, Makita and Stihl in its reliability summary, but does not establish that these are the only major brands. Milwaukee, Kobalt and Ryobi appear in the model-testing overview. None of those mentions, by itself, proves a brand’s position in a ranking.

How to make a useful worst-to-best shortlist

Rank the saws you can actually buy for the work you need done. First eliminate models that do not meet the workload; then compare remaining models on the same criteria. This produces a job-specific shortlist without treating a survey result or one model’s performance as a verdict on an entire brand.

  1. Define the work. Separate occasional pruning and storm cleanup from routine firewood cutting or sustained professional use. Consider the wood size, expected duty cycle and whether the saw will be used away from an outlet.
  2. Choose the power system. Gas, battery and corded electric saws appear in current comparative testing, so power type is a meaningful starting point. The available evidence does not establish that one type is best for every workload. Assess the specific model and the power source available at the jobsite.
  3. Compare model-level cutting and handling evidence. Use test results for the exact model and configuration, rather than transferring one saw’s result to its manufacturer’s entire lineup. The cited overview discusses performance and handling but does not supply a complete set of comparable scores here.
  4. Check ownership fit. For battery models, account for the battery platform you already use and the charging setup the work requires. For gas models, account for fuel and maintenance. These are practical ownership considerations, not evidence of a brand reliability ranking.
  5. Verify warranty and service for the exact saw and market. Read the product’s terms, exclusions and service process before purchase. A warranty duration alone is not a measure of reliability.

What a model-specific comparison can establish

Husqvarna’s US product page gives one concrete example: the 445S is a 50.2 cc, 3-horsepower gas saw supplied with an 18-inch bar, with a recommended bar range of 13 to 20 inches. Husqvarna describes it for residential firewood cutting, pruning and storm cleanup. Those specifications help a reader assess that model’s intended use; they do not show that Husqvarna ranks above or below another brand.

The same product page limits its cited warranty example to residential, non-income-producing use. Husqvarna’s US warranty information says coverage addresses defects in material or workmanship under normal use during the warranty period and describes authorized service routes. Check the current terms for the product and market you are buying; do not assume a residential warranty applies to paid construction or forestry work.

Warranty terms can differ even within a brand. DEWALT’s US warranty information lists two years for chainsaw model DCCS674. That is a model-specific example, not a brand-wide duration and not a direct comparison with Husqvarna’s warranty, whose duration is not established here.

Which brands should you consider for your work?

The named brands are reasonable starting points for researching available models, not a ranked recommendation. Look for a model that matches your workload, power needs, service access and warranty conditions. If two candidates remain, compare them directly using evidence for those exact models. The sources summarized here do not provide enough comparable results to place Stihl, ECHO, Husqvarna, Milwaukee, Kobalt, EGO, Ryobi, DeWALT, Craftsman, Jonsered or Makita in a defensible brand-wide order.

For any saw, follow its manual and use appropriate protective equipment; chainsaw operation requires training and carries serious injury risk. Husqvarna lists chainsaw chaps and filing equipment among accessories compatible with the 445S, but compatibility and suitability depend on the model and task.
