There is no universal reset procedure for electric blankets. Whether a blanket’s over-temperature protection resets—or requires manufacturer service—depends on its exact model. If it has overheated or is damaged, unplug it and do not try to open it, replace an internal fuse, or bypass a safety device.

Does an electric blanket have a resettable fuse?

Not necessarily. “Resettable fuse” does not establish that a blanket has a component users can reset, and the available safety guidance does not identify one design used across all blankets. A shutoff may involve a model-specific protection device or a fault that needs service; the manual for the exact blanket is the authority on what to do.

If the blanket has simply stopped working, do not assume that unplugging it, replacing a controller, or installing a generic fuse will make it safe. Find the model number on its product label and consult the manufacturer’s instructions or support for the approved reset or service procedure.

What to do if the blanket overheats or looks damaged

  1. Stop using it and unplug it. Do this if the blanket is smoking, melting, unusually hot, or visibly damaged. Do not reconnect it to test whether it works.
  2. Identify the product. Record the make and model from the label, along with any other identifying information requested by a safety notice.
  3. Check for a recall or warning. Search the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s current notices for the exact product. For example, the CPSC’s July 16, 2026 warning about named Melinora blankets cited five incident reports, including one burn injury, and urged consumers to stop using those blankets: CPSC Melinora warning. That count applies to the products in that warning, not to electric blankets generally.
  4. Follow the notice’s remedy or ask the manufacturer. The CPSC’s September 17, 2026 recall of about 195,000 named JKMAX blankets and heating pads cited overheating internal heating elements and listed a refund as the remedy: CPSC JKMAX recall. A separate March 9, 2023 recall of about 350,000 Bedsure blankets and pads cited a controller malfunction that could create fire and thermal-burn hazards and also listed a refund remedy: CPSC Bedsure recall. These notices concern named products only; check the exact model and follow its applicable remedy.
  5. Do not attempt internal repairs. Do not open the blanket, splice wiring, bypass a protection device, or fit an unapproved replacement fuse or controller. Consumer safety guidance advises against DIY repairs to internal wiring and controls; contact the manufacturer or follow the recall remedy instead. See State Farm’s electric blanket safety guidance.

How to reduce avoidable risk

  • Use, clean, and store the blanket according to the instructions for its model.
  • Do not fold an electric blanket while it is in use, as advised by UL Solutions.
  • If it is recalled, damaged, or the manufacturer cannot clear it for safe use, do not return it to service; follow the manufacturer’s guidance on repair or replacement.

UL Solutions quotes Derek E. Bell, MD, assistant professor of surgery and burn director at the University of Rochester’s Kessler Burn Center, advising users to “Turn the blanket on about half an hour before you’re planning to retire for the night and switch it off before you climb into bed.”
