No, not reliably. Vinegar can kill the leaves and stems it directly contacts, especially on small, young weeds, but it usually does not kill the roots of established perennial weeds. Those plants can regrow, and vinegar does not stop new weeds from germinating.
Why vinegar often does not kill a weed permanently
Acetic acid—the active ingredient in vinegar—acts as a contact herbicide: it injures plant tissue it touches and dries it out. It does not move through the plant to its roots, so foliage may brown and die while the root system survives. The National Pesticide Information Center explains this contact action and notes that acetic acid breaks down rapidly rather than leaving an herbicidal residue. National Pesticide Information Center, updated April 18, 2024.
That makes vinegar more likely to work on young, recently germinated weeds than on large or established plants. Oregon State University Extension says perennial weeds are among the hardest to control because the acid does not move to the root system very well, if at all. A treatment also will not control seeds that germinate afterward. Oregon State University Extension Service.
Household vinegar and horticultural vinegar are different
Typical household distilled white vinegar contains about 4–6% acetic acid. Horticultural vinegar generally means a concentrated solution of 20% or more. Oregon State Extension describes 20% horticultural vinegar as four times as strong as household vinegar at 5%. The higher concentration can increase injury to foliage, but it does not change vinegar’s contact-only action or guarantee root kill. NPIC; Oregon State Extension.

Do not assume that kitchen vinegar is a registered herbicide or that a stronger product is appropriate for every site. For a pesticide product, check for an EPA registration number and signal word, then follow its label for permitted uses, application directions, protective equipment, and first aid. The label—not a homemade recipe—determines how that product may be used.
Safety and unintended damage matter
Concentrated acetic acid can be corrosive or extremely irritating. It can burn skin and tissues in the mouth and throat if swallowed, irritate the respiratory system when enough vapor is inhaled, and permanently damage the cornea. The NPIC warning is simple: “Natural” does not mean “safe!” National Pesticide Information Center.

When using a pesticide, follow the exact product label and its personal protective equipment requirements. NPIC advises, at a minimum, long sleeves, long pants, shoes, socks, and gloves; protective eyewear and chemical-resistant gloves may be needed when mixing or applying vinegar as an herbicide. Keep other people away until the treated area is dry, and store pesticides out of reach of children and pets. University of Maryland Extension also cautions that spray drift can injure desirable plants and that vinegar may damage or stain reactive metals and masonry. University of Maryland Extension.

- For isolated weeds: Mechanical removal can be a practical option, particularly when removing the root system matters.
- For reducing new weeds in a garden bed: Oregon State Extension says a 3–4 inch layer of mulch can help smother many weeds. Oregon State University Extension Service.
- For quick injury to young weeds: A labeled contact herbicide may damage foliage, but foliage-burning organic herbicides do not affect roots and may require frequent reapplication, according to Oregon State Extension. Oregon State University Extension Service.
- For persistent or difficult weeds: Identify the species and seek species-specific integrated weed-management advice rather than relying on repeated vinegar applications.
Vinegar may be useful for top-killing small weeds it thoroughly contacts, but it is not a dependable one-time solution for established perennial weeds. For lasting control, the method needs to match the plant—including its roots and its potential to regrow.
