Willow is usable firewood once it is properly seasoned, but it is a modest choice for sustained home heating. It gives less heat per cord than many denser woods and burns relatively quickly. It can make sense when it is available locally, for shorter fires, or to help get a fire started; for long-lasting heat and coals, choose denser firewood.
How much heat does willow firewood provide?
Extension tables give different reference values for dry willow, so treat them as estimates rather than a guaranteed output for every log or appliance.
| Source | Dry willow heat value | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Oklahoma State University Extension | 13.2–17.6 million Btu per cord | Range listed in its dry-firewood table; publication year not stated on the indexed page. |
| University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Extension | 16 million Btu per cord | Willow table value; publication year not stated on the indexed page. |
The figures vary by source and should not be read as a precise prediction for a particular load of wood. Species, moisture, log size, and appliance affect the heat a household gets. Arkansas Extension also rates willow poor overall, including poor coaling quality, though it describes it as easy to split.
When is willow a useful choice?
Whether willow is “good” depends on what you need from the firewood. The UNECE Code of good practice for wood-burning (2021) describes willow as acceptable-quality firewood and notes that soft wood lights easily and develops a long flame, but burns faster. That makes willow more suitable for a quick fire or readily available fuel than for a long, steady bed of coals.
#1 Best Overall
- Versatile Cooking Wood: Suitable for parties, quiet evenings, or cooking for family and friends, this cooking wood enhances any outdoor gathering with authentic smoky flavor
- Convenient Dimensions: At 8 inches in length and 2-3 inches thick, this cooking wood lights easily and burns hot, delivering delicious smoky flavor for grilling, smoking, and fire pits
- Multiple Flavor Options: Available in three varieties including Oak, Cherry, and Hickory, each offering its own unique taste and aroma to complement your cooking preferences
- USDA Certified Quality: This cooking wood is USDA Certified, having been inspected to meet strict quality standards for safety and sanitation
- Kiln Dried Process: This cooking wood is kiln dried to ensure it is dry and ready to use, with excess moisture removed to prevent cracking or splitting during burning
- Consider it when the wood is free or nearby, properly dry, and you want a shorter fire or fuel that is relatively easy to split.
- Choose denser wood instead when your priority is more heat from a cord, longer burn time, or better coaling for sustained heating. Illinois Extension lists willow among softer species to avoid when heat is the priority.
How dry should willow be before burning?
Burn willow only after it has been adequately cured. New Mexico State University Extension says willow may be burned in a fireplace if it is adequately dried and notes that it produces less heat than many other woods. The practical target recommended by UNH Extension is 20% moisture or less.
Illinois Extension gives six to nine months as a usual firewood drying period, but that is a general interval, not a willow-specific guarantee. Drying depends on split size, weather, airflow, and storage. Split the wood, stack it so air can move around it, and protect it from rain.

- HEAVY DUTY FIREPLACE GRATE WITH EMBER RETAINER: The fireplace grate is made of heavy wrought iron, flat bars are 1 inch wide, 5/16 inch thick. Flat bars hold logs in place better. The fireplace screen/grate has a good weight of 10lbs, it’s durable, thick and well-constructed, easy to clean, just sweep it clean. Ember design makes burning more efficient.
- MEASUREMENTS: 17" W x 10" D x 2" (inner height) / 4"(overall height), two long supporting legs are 6 1/8 inches wide, the fireplace grate holds a pile of wood, and makes fire for a long time.
- SUPERIOR CIRCULATION: The burning wood rack is 2.5" high for easy air circulation and easy heating, this gives enough elevation for the wood to be able to suck a good amount of air from underneath and heat up really good, you can save wood logs, as after wood burning for hours, leave you with a healthy bed of coals on the firebox floor that provide heat in the room but not accelerate the wood burn on logs in the grate.
- STURDY STRUCTURE: 6-legs supporting makes the front and back long bars, not easy to deform or sag, 6 bars with small gaps holds all the big pieces of firewood, and most importantly holds smaller pieces of wood as the logs wittle down, the grate retains the embers to maintain the fire. With this grate you literally just through a log on the fire once you get those embers glowing and each log burns evenly and consistently.
- NO ASSEMBLY & EASY TO USE: The grate is a strong welded piece, no assembly, stylish and functional, suitable for mid-century or modern inside fireplace, wood burning stove, and also practical for patio fireplace, or outdoor campfires.
Check a freshly split face with a moisture meter
- Split a log so the interior face is exposed; do not rely only on the outside of the piece.
- Press the meter’s prongs into the fresh face, following the meter’s instructions.
- Test several pieces from different parts of the stack. Aim for readings of 20% moisture or less.
A firewood moisture meter is a practical way to check readiness. End cracks, lighter weight, and a ringing sound when two pieces are knocked together can offer clues, but UNH Extension recommends measuring a freshly split surface and sampling several logs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does willow smoke more or create creosote?
Willow is not automatically unsafe or especially smoky just because it is willow. The supported concern is wet or green firewood generally: it burns less efficiently and produces more smoke, and damp wood can contribute to creosote buildup. Illinois and UNH Extension guidance both emphasize keeping firewood below 20% moisture to reduce these problems.
