It is not a proven substitute for pulling weeds or using a herbicide labeled for the weed and location.
What rubbing alcohol does to plants
Alcohol may damage leaves on contact. In a June 20, 2024 response about pest control—not a weed-control trial—the University of Maryland Extension Home and Garden Information Center warned that alcohol can remove the protective wax layer on leaves and cause burn damage. That observation supports the possibility of plant injury; it does not demonstrate that rubbing alcohol reliably kills weeds, reaches their roots, or stops them from growing back. Read the Extension response.
The reviewed sources do not provide a controlled test of rubbing alcohol as a weed treatment or an Extension recommendation to use it for that purpose. There is therefore no substantiated concentration or spray recipe to recommend.
Why it may harm plants you want to keep
Leaf damage is not the same as selective weed control. A substance that contacts vegetation may affect desirable plants as well as weeds. UC Statewide IPM notes that herbicides can kill susceptible plants, not only weeds, and advises checking that the product label permits use around the plants and site involved. The same practical caution applies when considering any contact treatment: protect nearby vegetation rather than assuming only the target weed will be affected. UC IPM: Weed Control Using Herbicides.

Choose a weed-control method by plant and location
The right approach depends on whether the weed is young or established, annual or perennial, and whether desirable plants are nearby. Iowa State University Extension and UC IPM describe these practical options:
| Method | Where it can fit | Limits and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-pulling or digging | Most annual weeds, especially when removed early and before they produce seed. | Established perennials can be harder to remove; leftover roots, rhizomes, or other plant parts may regrow. A fishtail weeder is one optional hand tool, and tool choice is largely a matter of preference. |
| Mulch | Suppressing new weeds in a planting area, after existing weeds have been removed. | A typical mulch layer may not kill established weeds or their roots. |
| Boiling water | Newly emerged weeds or spots with no desirable plants nearby. | It can also kill wanted plants. Deep-rooted weeds may need retreatment. |
| Flame weeding | Small, young broadleaf weeds. | Grasses and perennials may need repeat treatment. It is nonselective; follow equipment directions and account for wind, dry conditions, and nearby flammable materials. |
| Organic herbicides | Situations suited to a labeled contact product. | These products are nonselective, may require repeat applications, and can harm desirable plants or people if misused. Follow the product label. |
| Labeled herbicides | A target weed and application site specifically covered by the product label. | Check the label for the weed, site, and nearby plants. Younger weeds are generally more susceptible to postemergence herbicides, and susceptible nontarget plants can be damaged. |
For hand-weeding, Iowa State says early removal is especially useful for annual weeds; persistent perennial weeds may take repeated effort. For other methods, match the treatment to the weed and location, and follow all label or equipment directions. Iowa State: Organic Methods for Weed Control; UC IPM: Weed Control Using Herbicides.

If you are considering a herbicide
- Identify the weed and the site. A treatment suitable for one weed or location may not be suitable for another.
- Check the product label. Use only a product whose label covers both the target weed and the application site, and check restrictions around desirable plants.
- Follow the label directions. Do not substitute advice for tool sanitation or insect treatment for weed-treatment instructions.
Iowa State Extension’s guidance on herbicide use explains how to select and apply products for weed control; the product label remains the authority for a specific application. Iowa State: How and when should herbicides be used for weed control?

University of Minnesota Extension discusses 70% isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting small hand tools, notes that it is flammable, and cautions that it might not effectively disinfect tools used on apple trees with fire blight. That guidance concerns tool sanitation—not spraying weeds—and does not establish either weed-killing effectiveness or safe use on plants.
