Start by checking inside the fridge at the upper right and near the crisper drawers; if you still cannot find it, use your model’s manual to confirm the location. Some models place the filter near the back by the water connection.
Where to look for the water filter
Samsung says filter placement depends on the refrigerator model. Its common locations include the upper-right interior and the area near the crisper drawers. Other models may have a filter in a central interior position or at the rear near the water connection.
- Check the upper-right interior. Look for a filter cartridge or a small cover that may conceal it.
- Check near the crisper drawers. Inspect the lower interior and look for a cartridge cover.
- Consult the manual if it is not visible. Search using the refrigerator’s exact model number; the manual identifies the location for that unit. Samsung’s filter finder can help identify the model and compatible filter.
Samsung’s regional guidance also lists the rear near the water connection as a possible location on some models. Treat it as model-dependent, not as the expected location on every Samsung fridge. Samsung Canada’s guide explains common placements and model-specific replacement guidance.
How to identify the correct replacement
Once you find the filter, read the part number printed on its cartridge and compare it with the refrigerator’s model-specific compatibility information. Samsung names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN and HAF-CU1 filter families in its regional guidance; the US page spells the last family HAFCU1. These names alone do not establish compatibility with your refrigerator.

- Use the refrigerator model number in Samsung’s filter finder or the compatible-filter list for the country where the fridge was sold.
- When the model number is not readily available, check the installed cartridge’s printed part number.
- Do not choose a filter just because its shape or name looks similar. Samsung’s US guidance warns that third-party filters may cause leaks or damage; this is Samsung’s stated warning, not an independent comparison.
Samsung’s US replacement guide covers its named filter families and replacement advice. Cartridge names and availability can vary by market, so confirm the exact refrigerator model before buying.
What to know before replacing it
Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every six months. This is manufacturer guidance, and the filter indicator should be reset after installation; the reset controls differ by model, so follow the instructions in the refrigerator’s manual.

Before removing a filter, Samsung advises turning off the water supply and dispensing water until the flow stops to relieve pressure. Its Canada guide describes turning a cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it and clockwise to install it, but the movement can differ by filter type. Follow the manual for your model rather than forcing the cartridge.
