What flowers are blooming along the highway? The answer depends on where and when you are traveling. Summer roadsides can show striking local wildflowers, but species and bloom timing vary with region, weather, soil, and roadside management. The examples below can help you notice what is there; a state- or route-specific guide is needed for a confident identification.

Summer roadside flowers vary by region

There is no single national list of flowers that blooms beside every highway. Extension guides are often regional: UF/IFAS’s guide covers central and south Florida, while Iowa State Extension and Illinois Extension describe plants found in their respective states. A flower common on a Missouri road may not be a useful clue in Florida or Iowa.

For summer examples in Missouri, University of Missouri Extension names butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), purple coneflower, and rose verbena (Glandularia canadensis). These are examples, not a prediction for every route. The Iowa guide also includes introduced plants, some of which can be aggressive, so a familiar roadside flower is not necessarily native.

Three Missouri summer examples

  • Butterfly weed: Missouri Extension describes this as one of the most colorful summer wildflowers and notes it often grows in poor roadside soil. Its flowers attract pollinators, and the plant can also be used as a cut flower.
  • Purple coneflower: One of the pollinator-friendly summer flowers named by Missouri Extension.
  • Rose verbena: Missouri Extension presents it as an option for extending bloom time.

For central and south Florida, use the UF/IFAS regional publication rather than transferring these Missouri examples to a different climate. Its guide includes photographs, range maps, probable habitats, and flowering statistics; the page lists a review date of February 13, 2025.

When roadside flowers bloom

Bloom periods shift with location, weather, soil, and management, so there is no reliable nationwide peak-bloom date. Illinois Extension describes roadside flowers across the growing season, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) explains that mowing schedules that promote wildflowers in one region may differ from those that work elsewhere.

In Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation says that more than 5,000 species of wildflowers along with native grasses flourish along Texas roadsides. That is a Texas-specific figure, not a national count. TxDOT’s wildflower program also offers a grass, weed, and wildflower guide that can help with local identification.

Why highwaysides are managed—and still bloom

Roadside vegetation is managed for several purposes, not simply left to grow. FHWA guidance supports planting native, locally appropriate grasses and wildflowers, including milkweed, to provide pollinator habitat. Flowering plants can supply nectar and pollen, while mowing and other integrated vegetation management help agencies manage the roadside.

Mowing timing is not one-size-fits-all: FHWA notes that a mid-summer mow can promote wildflowers in some regions, while mowing after spring bloom may be preferable in others. Management also has to account for road safety, including clear sight lines and safety zones. The presence of flowers does not mean a roadside is unmanaged or safe to enter.

FHWA describes one benefit of flowering vegetation this way: “Pollinator-friendly plants species, many of which are showy flowering plants, can improve the experience of the road user by creating natural beauty via plant form and color diversity along the roadside, in addition to improving driver performance by reducing monotony and stress.”

How to observe and identify flowers safely

  1. Keep driving safely. Do not stop in a travel lane or on a highway shoulder to inspect or photograph a flower.
  2. Use a safe, legal stopping place. If you want a closer look, leave the road only where stopping and access are permitted, such as a designated pull-off or public area.
  3. Note the location and conditions. A state, route, approximate date, flower color, and whether the plant is in a wet, dry, or disturbed area can help narrow an identification.
  4. Consult a local guide. Use a regional reference, such as the Florida, Iowa, or Missouri sources linked above; a broad national list may mislead because plants and bloom times differ by place.
  5. Leave plants where they grow unless you know collection is allowed. David Trinklein, a University of Missouri Extension horticulturist, warns: “First, it must be emphasized that wildflowers should not be dug from the wild.” Missouri Extension also says Missouri law does not permit removing plants or plant parts from rights-of-way without permission. That legal statement is specific to Missouri; rules elsewhere may differ.

Choose a guide for your route

A regional printed wildflower field guide is an optional aid if you want to identify plants during a trip. Choose one that covers the state or ecological region you will visit, and check whether it includes photographs, habitat notes, and bloom information. TxDOT’s wildflower program, for example, provides a grass, weed, and wildflower guide for Texas; availability of any particular guide through a retailer is not established here.
