Is Brown or Blue the Hot Wire? UK Wire Colors Explained

Brown is live and blue is neutral in the common UK single-phase color scheme, but wiring colors vary and cannot prove a conductor is safe.

In the common UK single-phase wiring color scheme, brown is live and blue is neutral; green-and-yellow identifies the protective earth conductor. That is a convention, not proof that an unfamiliar wire is safe or has a particular voltage. Wiring colors vary by country and installation, so never identify a conductor’s condition by color alone.

What brown, blue and green-and-yellow mean in UK wiring

For a UK plug, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea guidance identifies brown as live, blue as neutral, and green-and-yellow as earth. Its plug-specific instructions place brown on the right, nearest the fuse, and blue on the left. Those positions apply to the plug guidance; they should not be treated as instructions for fixed wiring or for wiring in another jurisdiction. Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea: Electricity

  • Brown: live, also called line. This conductor can carry dangerous voltage.
  • Blue: neutral. Neutral is not a guarantee that a conductor is safe to touch.
  • Green-and-yellow: protective earth, intended to provide a path for fault current rather than serve as a normal live conductor.

Why the color alone cannot tell you whether a wire is safe

Wire colors differ across countries and standards. The UK scheme changed in 2004, and older or unfamiliar installations may not follow the color convention a person expects. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warns against assuming that a cable of a particular color has a particular voltage; on an unfamiliar installation, the voltages present need to be identified. HSE: Work near electricity

In particular, do not treat blue as safe to touch or assume that brown is the only conductor that could be energized. A color is not a voltage test, and the common UK mapping does not establish the wiring arrangement in every country, cable, or installation.

KAIWEETS Voltage Tester/Non-Contact Voltage Tester with Signal Percentage, Dual Range AC 12V/70V-1000V, Live/Null Wire Tester, Electrical Tester with LCD Display, Buzzer Alarm, Wire Breakpoint Finder
  • SAFETY FIRST: It will send out multiple alarms through sound and light. When the voltage is detected, the tip will send out red light and beep. When the higher the sensed voltage is, or the closer it is to the voltage source, it beeps at a higher frequency and the percentage value will be larger. At the same time, the screen will be red or green, red means high voltage and live wire are detected, green means low voltage and null wire are detected
  • NON-CONTACT: With NCV inductive probe for AC voltage; Just place the tip near a terminal strip, outlet, or supply cord. When the tip glows red and the pen beeps, you know there's voltage present. The live wire detector can automatically detect the live or neutral wire. Ideal for breakpoint Test. Handy circuit tester for electricians, homeowners
  • DUAL RANGE: Detects standard and low voltage (12-1000V AC / 70-1000V AC) for more sensitive and flexible measurements. Press the S button to adjust sensitivity and adapt low range for doorbells, thermostats, irrigation wiring etc.; The NCV sensor automatically recognizes the voltage and displays it on the bar graph, and the percentage value can display the voltage signal intensity more intuitively
  • SECURITY LEVEL: IEC rated CAT III 1000V CAT IV 600V, Meets CE requirements; The electrical tester is safely double insulated. High Voltage Alert to warn you of voltage above 90V, the screen turn red and the safety symbol on the screen shines
  • COMPACT DESIGN: Bright LED flashlight for work in dim ares; Low-Power-Indicator when battery voltage is below 2.5V; Automatic Power Off after 5 minutes without operation or signal detection; Pocket-sized, pen hook allows you to carry it in your shirt pocket. We provide 36-Month after sale service, Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns

What to do if you are looking at a plug or unfamiliar wiring

If you are checking a UK plug

Use the plug manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local guidance. The borough’s guidance places brown live on the right nearest the fuse and blue neutral on the left, with green-and-yellow earth at the earth connection. Do not apply those plug positions to fixed wiring.

If you are looking at fixed wiring or cannot identify the installation

Do not guess from color or begin work on the assumption that the circuit is dead. HSE says electrical work should be carried out with the system dead wherever possible. If you cannot competently verify isolation and identify the conductors, stop and use a competent electrician. HSE guidance on low-voltage electrical test equipment is set out in GS38.

Why a socket tester is not proof of safety

Some socket testers can fail to detect faults and may indicate that a socket is safe when it is not. HSE advises that inspection and testing be carried out by a competent person; a simple plug-in tester should not be treated as conclusive proof that a circuit is safe to work on. HSE: Electrical safety FAQs

Incorrectly wiring a plug can cause fatal accidents or fires, according to HSE’s Introduction to electrical safety. If you are unsure about the wiring or how to verify it safely, do not proceed.
