A U6 code on a Samsung washer indicates that the laundry is unbalanced inside the tub, according to Samsung Support US. It does not, by itself, mean a component has failed. Pause the cycle, untangle and redistribute the load, then restart. If the code returns, check the load size and—if the washer is stable and level.
What does U6 mean on a Samsung washer?
Samsung Support US groups U6 with dc*, Ub, Ur, UE, 1 Ub and 1U6 under “Unbalanced Load Error,” describing the condition as: “The current load in the washer is unbalanced inside the tub.” The washer may stop or have difficulty completing a spin when the load cannot be balanced.
Samsung identifies Ur as a retry behavior: the washer may add water, attempt to rebalance the load and try spinning again, which can extend the cycle. That behavior is described for Ur; do not assume every U6 display means the washer will follow the same sequence. Code meanings can vary by model, so check the manual for your exact washer. Samsung’s warning that dc can refer to either an unbalanced load or a door issue is specific to dc, not a reason to interpret U6 as a door fault.
Samsung Korea’s service guidance also identifies U6 as an imbalance code. One relevant article was published on 2023-07-17, and another on 2020-04-17; the older article notes that code labels can change on newer models. How to clear a U6 code
- Pause and redistribute the laundry. Open the washer when it is safe to do so. Untangle clothing and spread it more evenly around the tub instead of leaving one heavy bundle on one side.
- Close the door and restart. Resume or restart the cycle using Start, following the controls on your model.
- Adjust the load size if needed. If the load is very small, add another suitable item; if it is excessive, remove some laundry. For bulky, absorbent bedding, arrange it evenly and follow the washer’s cycle and load instructions.
- Check stability if the code recurs. Confirm that the washer does not rock and is level. If adjustment is needed, use the leveling procedure in the exact model manual. Some models have an integrated level indicator and others do not; a small bubble level can help check models without one, but Samsung does not specify a particular tool.
- Escalate persistent errors. If U6 or imbalance symptoms continue after adjusting the load and checking installation, consult the manual and contact Samsung service or a qualified appliance technician.
Which load and installation issues should you check?
Clothing that is tangled or gathered to one side
A tangled or bunched load can be unevenly distributed during spin. Spread items around the tub before restarting rather than adding a replacement part: U6 indicates an imbalance condition, not a diagnosis of a failed component.
A load that is too small or too large
Samsung Korea’s guidance identifies both very small and excessive loads as possible contributors. Its advice is to add an item to a small load or reduce a large one. Follow the capacity and cycle recommendations in the manual for your washer.

Waterproof or bulky items
Samsung Korea cautions that items such as ski wear, diaper covers, bath mats, curtains, rainwear, car covers and sleeping bags can retain water and gather to one side during spin, contributing to vibration. Treat this as regional guidance, not a universal rule for every model or fabric; check the care label and your washer’s manual before washing such items. Samsung Korea also cautions against overfilling a laundry net and washing a net alone.
An unlevel or unstable washer
Samsung Korea says a washer that is not level can contribute to imbalance, vibration or noise. If the machine rocks or the code keeps returning with different loads, check its feet and installation using the model-specific instructions. Do not rely on a leveling procedure from another washer design.

When does U6 point to a repair?
The code alone does not establish that the washer is broken or identify a part that needs replacement. First try correcting the load and, if the symptom recurs, check that the washer is installed level and stable. If the same problem persists, Samsung Support US directs owners to additional spin troubleshooting, while Samsung Korea advises arranging an engineer inspection for a continuing symptom. Contact Samsung service or a qualified repair service for the next diagnosis rather than replacing a part based only on U6.
