A label alone does not tell you whether a piece is unusable: the type, size, location, grade and intended use all matter. Identify what you can see, consider how it may have formed, and use the right inspection method before deciding whether the wood is suitable—especially when it is part of a load-bearing structure.
What counts as a wood defect?
A defect is an irregularity that can reduce wood’s volume, quality, durability, strength or usefulness. It may originate while a tree grows or during drying, milling, machining, handling or exposure to insects and fungi. The term describes a condition, not an automatic verdict: a feature that is acceptable in one application or grade may be unacceptable in another. The USDA Wood Handbook glossary defines the term in relation to its effect on quality or utility.
When assessing a board or timber, separate three questions: what is the feature, what might have caused it, and does it matter for the intended use? Appearance-grade joinery, stock that will be cut into smaller pieces, outdoor lumber and structural members have different acceptance requirements.
How to identify common wood defects
Start by looking at both faces, the edges and the ends. Note whether a feature is shallow or deep, isolated or extensive, and whether it follows the grain, growth rings or a branch. These clues help distinguish conditions that can look similar.

Knots
A knot is associated with the base of a branch. A sound knot is solid across its face and shows no signs of decay; an unsound knot has a pith center and may include missing wood. Knots are natural growth features, but their acceptability depends on the applicable grading rules and the board’s use. A knot’s presence alone does not establish that lumber is unsafe or unusable.
Checks and splits
Checks and splits are lengthwise openings, often associated with drying, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. A check is commonly a surface or end opening associated with rapid or faulty drying. A split is a lengthwise separation formed as wood dries and may extend farther through the piece. The American Hardwood Export Council’s definitions distinguish the two. Check depth and whether a separation runs through a structural member matter more than the label alone.

- FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
- CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
- CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
- PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
- ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.
Shake
Shake is separation between annual growth rings. Because the separation follows the rings rather than running across the face like a typical check, inspect its extent and location before deciding whether the piece meets the requirements for its use.
Decay and rot
Decay is the breakdown of wood substance by fungi. Discoloration can be an early sign, but it is not conclusive on its own, and early decay can be difficult to recognize visually. Softness, water damage or visible deterioration warrant closer assessment, particularly in timber that carries load.

- WATER LEAK DETECTOR detects relative moisture content from leaks and flooding
- PINLESS MOISTURE METER measures relative moisture content in building materials
- NONDESRUCTIVE DETECTION up to 3/4-Inch deep using Electromagnetic field (EMF) technology
- USE ON DRYWALL, MASONRY, HARDWOOD, AND SOFTWOOD; calibrated for these materials only
- REVERSE-CONTRAST DISPLAY for easy viewing of reading and nine LED bars to indicate moisture range
Warp
Warp is distortion of the board’s shape. Common forms include cup across the width, bow along the length, crook along an edge and twist. Moisture loss and drying stresses can contribute, and distortion may appear or change after ripping or resawing releases stress within the board.
Other visible characteristics
Bark pockets, wane, pith, worm holes, bird pecks and sticker stain are among the features listed by AHEC. Their presence does not make them equivalent in structural or grading consequence to decay or a through-split. Assess each feature against the relevant grade and application rather than classifying every visible irregularity as a failure.

What causes checks, splits and other defects?
Some features reflect how the tree grew; others develop after felling. Insects and fungi can affect wood, while milling, machining and handling can introduce damage. Moisture changes are a major source of drying-related problems: as wood loses moisture and shrinks, it can check, split or distort.
Drying involves a trade-off. Drying too quickly can cause checking, while drying too slowly can contribute to stain or decay. Air-dried lumber can also develop checks, splits, honeycomb and warp, as described by Oregon State Extension’s guidance on air-shed drying lumber. There is no single drying rate that suits every species, board and condition.

Casehardening is a drying-related stress condition that may not be obvious while a board is intact. When the board is ripped or resawn, released stresses can cause it to warp. Wisconsin DNR’s forestry guidance describes this behavior, as well as surface and end checks associated with rapid drying. For broader moisture-related shrinkage and distortion, see Purdue Extension’s wood-drying guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess a board before using or machining it
- Define the use. Decide whether the wood is for visible finish work, stock that will be cut down, outdoor use or a load-bearing application. The relevant grade or structural requirements depend on that use.
- Inspect all accessible surfaces. Look at faces, edges and ends for knots, openings, ring separation, discoloration, damage and distortion. Record where a feature lies and how far it appears to extend.
- Distinguish appearance from condition. A stain is not by itself proof of decay; a natural knot is not automatically a structural failure. Conversely, a shallow-looking surface opening does not prove that a split is shallow.
- Consider moisture if drying problems are suspected. A wood moisture meter can help assess moisture conditions, but it cannot identify knots, shake, decay or every cause of warp. Treat its reading as one piece of information, not a complete diagnosis.
- Recheck after cutting when stress is a concern. If a board may have drying stress, inspect its shape after ripping or resawing; distortion can emerge as internal stress is released.
- Use the applicable grading basis. A general defect guide cannot supply species-specific acceptance limits. Check the grading rules and requirements relevant to the lumber and intended application.
When visual inspection or probing is not enough
Visual inspection is useful for identifying intermediate or advanced surface conditions, including visible decay, water damage, mechanical damage and failed members. It is less reliable for early decay, which may not be apparent at the surface, according to Federal Highway Administration guidance.
For timber condition assessment, probing with a moderately sharp object—such as an awl, pocketknife or pick hammer—can help investigate near-surface decay or estimate the depth of a check or split. Deteriorated wood may feel softer and offer less resistance. The method is mainly sensitive to near-surface decay, may be less useful in naturally low-hardness woods and does not measure mechanical properties. See the FHWA guidance on probing.
Probing is not a routine instruction for finish-grade furniture stock, and a surface glance or single probe cannot establish that a load-bearing member is safe. Structural decisions depend on the member, its loads, species, exposure and the applicable standards; seek a qualified assessment if deterioration or a significant split is suspected.

Compare the feature with the job rather than relying on the word “defect.” A small sound knot may be acceptable in one grade or design, while an unsound knot, deep split, extensive shake or suspected decay may rule out a particular use. A board that will be cut into shorter pieces may allow a defect to be removed; a structural member cannot be judged by appearance alone.
Quick Recap
- Type and extent: distinguish a surface check from a through-split, a sound knot from an unsound one, and superficial discoloration from suspected decay.
- Likely cause: consider natural growth, moisture and drying stress, insects or fungi, and machining or handling damage.
- Intended use: account for appearance, machining, exposure and structural demands.
- Inspection confidence: visible inspection, moisture readings and limited probing each answer different questions and have different limits.
- Applicable standard: use the grading rules for the relevant species and application; general definitions do not establish universal accept-or-reject thresholds.
