Start with the pump’s supply and external flow path before opening it: confirm compressed air for an air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pump, or power and controls for an electric diaphragm pump, then check the inlet, outlet, and valves. The two designs have different failure points, so identify the pump type, manufacturer, and model first. Use that model’s manual for operating limits and repairs; pressure, suction lift, and compatible materials are not universal.
Identify the pump and make the job safe
“Diaphragm pump” describes different equipment. An AODD pump is driven by compressed air; an electric diaphragm pump has a motor and electrical controls. Troubleshooting one as though it were the other can send you toward the wrong component or an unsafe repair.
- Record the manufacturer, exact model, pump type, pumped fluid, and symptom.
- Before inspection or service, follow the manufacturer’s isolation and pressure-relief instructions. Electrical and fluid hazards depend on the installation and the liquid being pumped.
- Keep pressure, suction lift, torque, material compatibility, and service procedures tied to the exact model and fluid. Do not borrow a limit from another pump.
If fluid appears at the air exhaust or another area the manual identifies as normally dry, stop the pump and consult the model-specific service instructions or qualified support. A damaged diaphragm may be one explanation, but the available guidance does not establish a safe, universal repair procedure for unknown fluids or installations. Binks DX70 troubleshooting guidance
Use this diagnosis order
- Confirm the drive supply. For an AODD pump, check the air line, supply pressure and volume, and possible exhaust or air-valve restrictions. For an electric pump, verify power and the applicable wiring, fuse or breaker, switch, and pressure controls against the manual.
- Confirm the source and process path. Check that the liquid source contains fluid, process valves are open, and the outlet is not obstructed.
- Inspect the suction side. Check the inlet strainer, hose or tubing, connections, and check valves before opening the pump.
- Match the conditions to the model. Consider liquid viscosity, suction lift, hose sizing, and—on an AODD pump—the available air volume. Verify that operating conditions fall within the model’s requirements.
- Open the pump only when indicated. If external checks do not explain the fault, inspect diaphragms, check-valve balls and seats, seals, and air-valve parts as directed by the service manual.
If the pump will not run or keeps stalling
AODD pump
Check for a restricted or undersized air line and confirm required supply conditions in the pump manual. Inspect the exhaust muffler and air valve for restriction or icing, and confirm process valves are open. Excessive air pressure can make some pumps change over too quickly to draw fluid effectively, so adjust startup and pressure only as the model instructions direct. Graco pump instructions

Electric diaphragm pump
Check the power source, wiring, fuse or breaker, switch, and pressure-control components where fitted. Use the pump manual for electrical checks and service steps; do not assume an AODD air-supply diagnosis applies.

- Clear debris from the inlet strainer and check for a low or empty liquid source.
- Look for closed valves, kinks, a collapsed or restricted hose, and unsuitable tubing size.
- Check suction connections for leaks. A leak can let air into the line without showing an outward fluid leak.
- Inspect check-valve balls and seats for debris, wear, damage, or failure to seat.
- Compare suction lift, fluid viscosity, and available air volume with the exact pump’s specifications.
- If the pump was recently serviced, check its assembly against the correct manual.
For high-viscosity liquid, Unibloc advises starting slowly so the pump can prime before increasing speed. That is supplier guidance, not a universal limit; confirm the procedure and application requirements in the specific pump documentation. Unibloc pump troubleshooting guidance
If flow pulsates or becomes unstable
Excessive pulsation can have more than one cause. Binks lists air entering the fluid line, restricted air supply, damaged fluid check valves, worn centre-shaft seals, and a worn air valve as possible causes for its DX70 pump. Check fluid-line connections and the air supply first, then inspect the model-specific valves and seals before replacing parts. These causes are not a universal fault list for every diaphragm pump. Inspect parts and choose replacements by model
Diaphragms, check-valve balls and seats, seals, and air-valve components may require inspection or replacement, but parts are not interchangeable by category alone. Manuals identify service tasks for particular models, and electric-pump guidance also points to valve failure as a possible cause of no discharge. Binks DX70 manual Remco pump FAQ
Before ordering a repair kit or replacement component, verify the exact pump model and that wetted materials are compatible with the fluid. A part described simply as a diaphragm, ball, or seal is not enough to establish fit.

When to stop troubleshooting
- The fault persists after checks of supply, valves, inlet, outlet, and visible connections.
- Fluid is appearing in an area the manual identifies as normally dry, or there is an unexplained leak.
- The fluid’s hazards or compatibility with pump materials are uncertain.
- The next step requires internal service, but you do not have the model-specific manual or the work is outside your service capability.
Use the manufacturer’s service guidance or appropriate qualified support rather than applying a generic repair procedure to an unknown pump or liquid.
