To create a living arch, choose climbers that suit your climate and site, match the arch’s strength and support spacing to their growth habits, then plant and train them over time. Clematis, climbing roses, honeysuckle, star jasmine and sweet peas offer different combinations of flowers, fragrance and foliage—but they are a shortlist, not a mix that will thrive in every garden.
Choose plants for the arch and the site
Before buying plants, check how much sun the arch gets, the soil and drainage, wind exposure and local winter temperatures. Consider each plant’s mature vigor as well as its flowers: a climber that suits the light may still be a poor choice for a small or lightweight structure.
| Plant | Habit and seasonal interest | Site and climate considerations | How it climbs and what the arch needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clematis | Perennial; flower color, form, flowering time and mature size vary by cultivar. Many climbing types reach around 3 m, but the specific cultivar determines its eventual size. | Choose a cultivar for the available light and space. Requirements vary across the group. | Leaf stalks wrap around slender supports, such as wire or narrow trellis members. Thick bare posts alone may not provide a usable grip. |
| Climbing rose | Perennial, with seasonal flowering. Flowering and vigor depend on the rose selected. | A classic option for a sunny site. Allow room to work around thorny growth. | Roses sprawl rather than twine. Weave or loosely tie shoots onto the arch as they grow. |
| Honeysuckle | Perennial; some varieties are fragrant and may attract wildlife. | Many suit sun or part shade, but choose a species appropriate to your region. Guidance from University of Maryland Extension, for example, is specific to Maryland. | Stems twine, so provide members they can wrap around. |
| Star jasmine | Evergreen foliage and strongly scented white summer flowers, according to Garden Arch’s guide reviewed in February 2026. | Prefers a sunny position and is susceptible to severe frost; it is not suitable for every climate. | Check that the support offers an appropriate route for its growth and can carry its mature weight. The cited arch guide does not specify support spacing. |
| Sweet peas | Fragrant annual flowers that can be cut for indoor use; replant for a new season. | Choose a full-sun position. As an annual, it can provide seasonal color while perennial climbers establish. | Provide slender supports for the plants to climb; the arch guide does not specify a spacing or tying method. |
The plant descriptions and shortlist come from Garden Arch’s guide to climbers for garden arches. For the distinction between clematis leaf-stalk climbing, honeysuckle twining and rose growth that must be trained, see University of Maryland Extension’s vine guide.
Make sure the arch can handle the plants
Install the arch before planting, and check that it is stable, weather-durable and suited to the plants’ eventual size and vigor. Confirm the structure’s load capacity with its manufacturer rather than assuming a light-duty arch can carry a mature woody climber. Garden Arch specifically cautions that wisteria can become heavy; it is not one of the five plants above, but it illustrates why mature weight matters when choosing any climber.
#1 Best Overall
- Versatile garden arch, perfect for event, wedding, and garden decoration. A must-have for your special occasions
- Approximately 55 inches Width x 94 inches Height, this real size arbor creates a stunning entrance to your garden, patio or walkway
- Easy assembly and disassembly, praised by customers. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use
- Decorate with vibrant flowers, tulle, balloons, foliage, lights or anything else to create a beautiful arch backdrop stand
- Not just a garden trellis for climbing plants, but also a balloon arch stand for birthdays and a decorative arch for weddings
Support spacing matters, too. Clematis needs narrow members its leaf stalks can grasp; honeysuckle needs something stems can twine around; roses need places where their shoots can be woven or tied. A support designed around the plant’s climbing method is more useful than a bare, thick post that the plant cannot grip.
Plant at the right time and train new growth
- Put the arch in place first. Set it securely before planting so roots are not disturbed later and the plants have support from the start.
- Plant in suitable conditions. The Royal Horticultural Society says most climbers are best planted in spring or autumn, when cool, damp weather helps them settle. Follow the plant’s specific instructions and local conditions.
- Water through establishment. Water new plants as needed for at least their first growing season, especially in hot, dry or windy weather. Keep soil moist rather than waterlogged; check containers more often because they dry faster.
- Guide shoots as they grow. Loosely tie new shoots with soft twine when needed to direct them along the arch and reduce wind damage. Do not fasten stems tightly. Roses especially need training; self-clinging or twining climbers may need less intervention once they find suitable supports.
- Use mulch where appropriate. Mulch can help conserve moisture and improve soil. Choose a material and application time suited to the plant and local conditions.
These general planting and establishment recommendations follow the RHS guide to planting a climber.

Give clematis and container plants extra consideration
Clematis is a broad group, so select a cultivar that fits the arch’s available space and aspect rather than relying on a generic label. Keep the roots cool and moist, and prune according to the cultivar’s flowering group: there is no single pruning schedule that suits every clematis. The RHS clematis guide says smaller clematis grown in containers need a pot at least 45 cm deep and wide, with particular attention to watering and root conditions.
Container-grown perennial vines also face colder roots than plants in the ground, and pots dry more quickly. Protect containers and adjust watering to local weather. A pot does not remove the need to match the plant to the site or provide suitable support.

Set realistic expectations for coverage and flowering
A living arch develops as its plants grow; the available guidance does not establish a reliable time-to-cover estimate for this design. Coverage depends on the climbers chosen, their cultivars, local growing conditions, arch dimensions and care. The five plants also do not provide guaranteed year-round foliage or continuous flowers: sweet peas are annual, star jasmine is evergreen but frost-sensitive, and the other choices vary by species or cultivar and season.
