Crown of thorns (Euphorbia milii) grows best in strong light and a free-draining potting mix. Water thoroughly only after the mix has dried, then let excess drain away; water less in winter. Its sharp spines and irritating milky sap call for careful handling.
What is a crown of thorns plant?
Euphorbia milii is a spiny succulent shrub native to Madagascar. Despite its succulent growth, it is not a cactus. It can be grown indoors in a bright spot or outdoors seasonally where conditions are suitable. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says it cannot survive freezing, so protect it from frost and bring outdoor plants inside before freezing weather.
How much light does crown of thorns need?
Choose the sunniest bright location available. The RHS recommends full light for plants grown under glass, and North Carolina State University Extension describes a sunny indoor location. The University of Florida IFAS Extension also recommends full sun for landscape planting.
If your plant has good daytime light but does not flower, consider whether bright artificial light is reaching it at night. University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension notes that too much light after dark can interfere with flower initiation. The source does not specify a universal number of dark hours.

What soil should you use, and how should you water?
Choose a fast-draining mix
Drainage matters more than a particular brand. The RHS recommends a mix of three parts peat-free, loam-based potting compost to one part grit. This is a useful formulation, not the only suitable recipe; the University of Florida IFAS Extension also calls for well-drained soil.
Water when the mix has dried
Let the growing medium dry between waterings rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. When it is dry, water thoroughly and let the excess run out of the pot. Do not leave the pot standing in water. The time it takes to dry depends on factors such as pot size, light, temperature, and mix.

Water sparingly during active growth and reduce watering substantially in winter. The RHS advises keeping the plant dry in winter. The cited care guidance does not establish one schedule that suits every indoor setting.
When should you feed it?
During active growth, the RHS recommends applying a low-nitrogen liquid fertilizer once a month. It also advises keeping the plant dry in winter. Avoid treating a regional hardiness category as a precise indoor temperature threshold: the RHS profile establishes that the plant does not survive freezing, but does not give a universal minimum temperature for every home or growing setup.

How can you encourage flowering?
Give the plant strong daytime light, and avoid bright artificial lighting at night if it is preventing dark conditions. Wisconsin Extension identifies excessive nighttime light as a possible obstacle to flower initiation. These sources do not provide a universal lighting timetable, so there is no supported hour-by-hour prescription.
How do you prune or propagate crown of thorns?
North Carolina State University Extension lists stem cuttings as a propagation method, and the University of Florida IFAS Extension describes tip cuttings. Use clean pruning snips and wear gloves; cutting the stems exposes irritating milky sap. The cited guidance supports these cutting methods but does not establish a guaranteed rooting time or success rate.

Is crown of thorns dangerous to people or pets?
Yes. The plant has sharp spines, and its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes; eating it is harmful. Keep it away from children and pets, and avoid contact with the sap. Wear gloves and other protective equipment when pruning or repotting, as the RHS advises.
If sap gets in an eye, the Queensland Poisons Information Centre advises rinsing the eye with water for 15 minutes. For serious exposure or symptoms, contact your local poison information service or a medical professional.
