WOOD Magazine’s cherry component-ready flat-screen entertainment center is a substantial freestanding furniture project, not a basic TV stand. Its current project page lists finished dimensions of 82 inches wide × 19½ inches deep × 28¼ inches high, with adjustable shelving, cable access, drawers, sliding doors, and enclosed storage. The instructions were updated April 28, 2025. See the WOOD Magazine project plan.
What the plan builds
The project is a wide cherry media center organized around a central component bay. Enclosed areas, drawers, and sliding doors provide storage while keeping equipment and accessories out of sight. Shelf-pin holes allow the shelves to be repositioned, and openings in the center back provide a route for cables. The design also includes a separate decorative base.
WOOD Magazine’s current project page gives the finished size as 82 inches wide × 19½ inches deep × 28¼ inches high. Measure the intended location, including clearance for the doors and cable connections, before buying materials or starting the build. The retailer listing gives a slightly different size—82 × 19 × 28 inches—so use the current project-page dimensions for planning and check the plan version you obtain. WOODStore’s plan listing identifies the project as featured in WOOD Issue 208, November 2011.
Storage, shelves, and cable routing
The plan’s component-ready layout depends on careful alignment between the central shelves and cable openings. During dry-fitting, the builder marks the grooved center back and the lower edges of the cable-access holes so the openings finish flush with the shelves. This detail matters: misplaced holes can leave cables obstructed or create an untidy opening at the shelf line.

- Adjustable shelves: Shelf-pin holes let you alter shelf positions to suit components.
- Back access: Cutouts in the center back allow cables to pass through the case.
- Concealed storage: Drawers and sliding doors provide enclosed space for accessories and other items.
- Sliding-door construction: The doors use frame-and-panel construction with tracks and sliding-door hardware.
Materials, joinery, and shop work
The instructions specify cherry stock and plywood, along with #20 biscuits, shelf pins, drawer and door hardware, and finishing supplies. Joinery includes biscuit slots, dados, and rabbets; glued assemblies are clamped during construction. The photographed project received three coats of satin polyurethane, with sanding between coats. That is the finish reported for the example, not a requirement that every builder use the same product.
Expect a broad set of woodworking operations. The project instructions include table-saw and dado-blade work, router operations, shaping with a bandsaw or jigsaw, drilling shelf-pin holes, dry-fitting, sanding, and clamping. Accurate layout is especially important where the center assembly, case sides, top, base, and backs meet.

Why a #20 biscuit joiner is relevant
The plan explicitly calls for #20 biscuit slots in parts of the case and base, making a biscuit joiner compatible with #20 biscuits a directly relevant tool. The instructions also require other equipment and operations; owning a biscuit joiner alone does not cover the project’s needs. Review the complete tool and material requirements in the plan before committing to the build.
How the build is organized
- Build the center assembly: Start with the dividers, shelves, and hardwood edging. Cut the specified #20 biscuit slots, shallow divider dado, and shelf-pin holes.
- Dry-fit and transfer locations: Assemble the center section without glue to check fit, then transfer biscuit locations to the top and bottom. Mark the center-back cable openings in relation to the shelves, including their bottom edges.
- Prepare and assemble the case: Cut biscuit slots, rabbets, and shelf-pin holes in the sides; add stiles and rails, then install the outside backs with screws. Fit the center back with its cable-access cutouts.
- Complete the exterior and storage: Build and attach the top and decorative base. Construct the frame-and-panel sliding doors, install their tracks and hardware, and build the drawers.
- Sand and finish: Complete the surface preparation and apply a finish appropriate to your materials and intended use. The pictured project uses three coats of satin polyurethane with sanding between coats.
Is this the right entertainment-center plan?
This plan suits a builder looking for a large, furniture-style cherry unit with a mix of open component space and concealed storage. Its width and combination of casework, doors, drawers, and joinery make it a substantial shop project. It is a better fit for someone comfortable with accurate layout, machine operations, dry-fitting, and multi-part assembly than for a first woodworking project requiring only basic tools.

For comparison, Kreg’s separate official Wall-Mounted Media Cabinet Project Plan is labeled advanced, designed for a TV as large as 50 inches, and uses a plywood-and-pocket-hole approach. It is a different category of project—not a variation or feature of WOOD Magazine’s freestanding cherry entertainment center.
