No single industrial racking system suits every warehouse. The right choice depends on the loads you store, how quickly workers need access to them, inventory rotation, handling equipment, and the building itself. Selective rack favors direct access; deeper-lane systems can store similar loads more densely but limit access or require a particular loading sequence.

What are the main types of industrial racking?

FIFO means first in, first out: the load put away first is retrieved first. LIFO means last in, first out: the most recently stored load is retrieved first. Those behaviors matter when choosing a system, but so do pallet condition and dimensions, SKU variety, load weight, and the access each position needs.

System Access and rotation Typical fit Main trade-off
Selective pallet rack Direct access to each position; high selectivity Mixed SKUs and operations that need immediate access Less lane density than deep-lane systems; aisle layout still affects storage and access
Drive-in Forklift enters the lane from one end; LIFO Similar loads stored densely when last-in, first-out suits the inventory policy Less selectivity, and trucks operate within the rack structure
Drive-through Access from both ends; FIFO Similar-width loads that benefit from first-in, first-out rotation Needs access at both ends and loads compatible with the lane
Flow-through / pallet flow Inclined lanes move loads by gravity from the loading end to the unloading end; FIFO Loads suited to lane flow when separate loading and unloading faces are useful Requires a compatible flow-lane design and operating process
Push-back Loaded and unloaded at the front; LIFO Multiple pallets per lane when front access and last-in, first-out rotation fit LIFO behavior; lane design and handling equipment must suit the load
Cantilever Loads rest on projecting arms Long or awkward items such as pipes, lumber, or bar stock Designed for specialized load shapes rather than ordinary pallet positions

MHI describes selective pallet rack as the most common alternative and notes its 100% selectivity. Its storage-equipment taxonomy also describes the access and rotation patterns shown above. MHI equipment-selection guidance; MHI storage-equipment taxonomy.

How do you choose a system for your warehouse?

Work from the inventory and operation outward rather than choosing a rack type based only on a desire for more storage. A system that stores more loads in a given area may be a poor fit if workers cannot retrieve the required SKU or the handling equipment cannot maneuver safely.

Industrial Pallet Racking System, Heavy Duty Pallet Rack with 4062 lbs Capacity per Bay, 96" Beam Warehouse Storage Rack, Adjustable Steel Industrial Shelving for Warehouse, Garage, Workshop Storage
  • 💡【Industrial Q235 Steel Frame】 Built from Q235 industrial steel with 15-gauge uprights and 16-gauge beams, this industrial pallet racking system provides strong structural support for warehouse storage. The heavy-duty frame helps handle demanding storage loads in industrial environments.
  • 💡【4062 lbs Capacity per Bay】 Each bay supports up to 4062 lbs, making this heavy duty pallet rack suitable for pallets, bulk inventory, and equipment storage. The reinforced beam design distributes weight evenly for stable and organized warehouse storage.Designed as a heavy duty 4000 lb rack solution for palletized storage and warehouse inventory organization.
  • 💡【Adjustable Beam Levels】 The rack uses a three-rivet safety locking pin system with adjustable beam levels. Shelf heights can be repositioned to fit different pallet sizes, helping improve flexibility in a warehouse storage rack or pallet racking system setup.
  • 💡【Durable Powder-Coated Finish】 The steel frame features a powder-coated surface that helps resist rust, scratches, and everyday warehouse wear. This finish supports long-term use in demanding storage environments such as distribution centers and workshops.
  • 💡【Wide Industrial Storage Applications】 Designed for warehouses, distribution centers, workshops, garages, and retail stockrooms. This industrial pallet racking solution helps organize pallets, tools, and inventory, making it a practical garage storage rack heavy duty or warehouse storage system.
  1. Document the loads. Record load and pallet dimensions, weight, pallet construction and condition, SKU variety, and how many loads need storage.
  2. Set the access and rotation rules. Determine which positions need immediate access, how frequently loads are put away and picked, and whether each SKU requires FIFO, can use LIFO, or has a different rotation policy.
  3. Compare selectivity with lane depth. Decide how many positions can be placed behind one another without compromising the access the operation requires. Deep lanes can suit similar loads, but they reduce direct access compared with selective rack.
  4. Check handling equipment against the layout. Confirm that the truck or automated system can meet the proposed aisle width, turning radius, rack reach, and lifting-capacity requirements.
  5. Check the building and site. Review clear height, floor condition and capacity, structural features, and other facility constraints before settling on a rack configuration.
  6. Have the design and requirements reviewed. Validate load data, equipment clearance, floor and site conditions, rack design, applicable standards, and local requirements with qualified professionals.

These are the selection factors identified in MHI’s equipment-selection guidance. Compare supplier proposals against the same load data, facility constraints, and operating requirements. The cited sources do not establish a universal price per storage position; project scope and configuration affect the cost.

What safety and standards should be considered?

Rack selection is also an engineering and safe-operation decision. RMI’s resource page lists the following standards and guidance; their listing does not by itself establish which edition or requirements apply to a particular project.
