Its creator names lamps, heaters, soldering irons and hot glue guns as examples. But the available project description does not give the circuit’s electrical ratings, load limits or isolation details, so it is not enough to establish that the design is safe or compatible with a particular appliance.
What the adjustable power outlet is designed to do
Make’s DIY Hacks & How To’s: Adjustable Power Outlet, published January 3, 2014, describes an external dimmer circuit for appliances that otherwise offer only on/off operation. The idea is to adjust an appliance’s output without modifying its built-in controls.
The video description lists lamps, heaters, soldering irons and hot glue guns as example loads. Those examples describe the project’s intended use; they do not establish that every device in those categories is suitable. The description does not state voltage, current or wattage ratings, allowable load types, or how the circuit is isolated from mains electricity.
What the description does—and does not—establish
- Established: the project is presented as an external power-adjusting circuit for appliances with on/off controls.
- Named examples: lamps, heaters, soldering irons and hot glue guns.
- Not established: electrical ratings, compatible lamp or motor types, load limits, isolation design, a complete bill of materials, or certification.
Without those specifications, do not assume the circuit can safely control a particular appliance. Check the appliance’s requirements and the controller’s documented ratings and compatibility before connecting them. If those details are unavailable, use a purpose-built, appropriately rated control instead of treating the project description as a specification.

Compatibility depends on the appliance
Lamps and dimmable lighting
Dimming is not universal. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) says LEDs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) need dimmer-compatible controls. A lamp that switches on normally may still flicker, behave unpredictably or be unsuitable for a particular dimmer. Match the control to the lamp’s stated dimming requirements rather than relying on the word “lamp” in the project description.
Heaters and heating tools
The project description names heaters, soldering irons and hot glue guns, but does not specify which heating-element designs or ratings the circuit can handle. In particular, that example is not a blanket endorsement for controlling a space heater. ESFI advises plugging space heaters directly into a wall outlet—not an extension cord or power strip. Do not use a DIY controller with a space heater unless its manufacturer explicitly permits that arrangement and the controller is documented as suitable for the load.

Mains-voltage construction requires an insulated enclosure
A related Make: heating-element control project, published May 25, 2015, gives a clear enclosure requirement for its AC-powered circuit. Project author Jason Poel Smith writes: “Because we are connecting to an AC power cord, it is absolutely essential that all the parts be mounted inside an insulated project enclosure.” That guidance concerns the related project, not a confirmed construction detail or rating for the 2014 adjustable-outlet video.
The related project also lists an insulated enclosure and insulated twist-on connector caps among its materials. These are not a substitute for proper design, construction and verification: ordinary parts do not by themselves make a mains-powered circuit safe. If you cannot confirm the circuit’s isolation, wiring, enclosure and ratings, do not build or energize it; consult a qualified electrician or use a listed control designed for the appliance.

How power adjustment may work
In general, many lamp dimmers and motor controllers use a triac to moderate power by clipping portions of AC pulses, as Make explains in its separate triac overview. This is general background only: the adjustable-outlet video description does not confirm that its circuit uses a triac. Nor does this operating principle show that a particular appliance is compatible with the circuit.
