The project is a how-to, not a listing for a finished lamp: its author provides design and circuit resources, while the builder selects compatible parts and verifies their ratings.
How the floating lamp works
The base uses a magnetic-field sensor, coils, a control board, and a primary magnet. The board adjusts the coils to help balance the magnet and the object attached to it. This active control is what sustains the floating effect; it is not simply a magnet suspended over another magnet. The project author provides circuit diagrams, PCB layouts, component lists, and a magnetic-field sensor assembly reference in the Hackaday.io project details.
Lighting is a separate system. A wireless-power transmitter in the base transfers power to a receiver in the floating lamp. The transfer distance depends on the transmitter and receiver coils; the author notes that inductance affects how far the circuit supplies voltage. The tutorial does not establish a universal operating distance or charging performance.
Parts and design resources
- Levitation assembly: a compatible control board, magnetic-field sensor, coils, and primary magnet, following the project’s circuit and component references.
- Wireless lighting: a transmitter board and coil for the base, plus a receiver board and coil for the floating lamp.
- Light module: the example uses a remotely controlled, rechargeable 16-color module. The author specifically recommends choosing an LED module with a built-in rechargeable battery.
- Snail body: a printable 3D design that can be modified in shape, size, and color. The base material and exact print settings are not specified.
- Power and controls: the documented levitation-board check uses a 12 V adapter, and the wireless transmitter has a switch so the builder can turn its power on and off.
The project is presented as a build guide rather than a sale of the finished lamp. In the SparkFun Community discussion, the author clarifies that they show how to make it, rather than selling it directly.

Build the base and lighting system
1. Assemble the levitation electronics
Use the project’s circuit diagrams, PCB layouts, and component list to assemble the board, sensor, and coils. Confirm the ratings of the actual board and its power supply; the tutorial’s 12 V instruction applies to the board it describes, not to every levitation module.
2. Install the wireless transmitter
Solder a coil to the transmitter board, secure the transmitter and coil in the base, and add a switch to control transmitter power. Keep in mind that coil selection affects the transfer distance; the tutorial does not specify a guaranteed distance for arbitrary coil pairs.

3. Prepare the floating snail
Print and customize the supplied snail design to suit the chosen light module and levitation setup. Attach the levitation magnet to the snail’s base plate. Fit the wireless receiver and LED module inside the body, with the receiver coil positioned away from the center of the magnet. The author warns that the magnet’s field can affect charging and suggests placing the receiver coil above the lamp instead.
Check levitation and troubleshoot the documented board
- Connect the project board to a 12 V adapter, as specified for the author’s documented board.
- Move the magnet slowly from top to bottom and observe whether the board balances it so it floats.
- If the magnet does not balance, the tutorial instructs builders to adjust VR1 and VR2 on that board.
VR1 and VR2 are not universal settings or controls. Follow the adjustment instructions for the exact board being used, and verify its supply requirements before applying power. The project materials do not establish safe operating limits, thermal behavior, or electrical certification for a completed build.

What to check before choosing a levitation kit
A general levitation DIY kit can be a starting point for sourcing parts, but the project does not validate a particular commercial kit for the finished snail’s mass, geometry, or lighting arrangement. The author gives no verified payload target or exact design dimensions, so measure the parts you plan to use rather than assuming compatibility.
