This avoids trying to seat and interpret a flexible tape blade in a far corner. The method is practical, but the cited how-to sources do not establish a numerical accuracy tolerance.
Build the sliding steel-rule gauge
The featured shop-made design holds a pair of steel rules in a hardwood clamp. WOOD Magazine describes making its example with two 6-inch rules; it also reports making other versions with 12-inch and 18-inch rules. Those are alternative sizes, not a required set. WOOD Magazine’s build description specifies this construction:
- Cut two hardwood pieces to form the clamp.
- Cut a shallow dado in the lower piece. Its depth should equal the combined thickness of both steel rules stacked together; no specific dado depth is given.
- Fit the upper piece with a #8-32 nylon knurled-head thumbscrew, a wing nut, and a brass threaded insert.
- Glue the hardwood pieces together with the rules held in the dado. The nylon screw clamps the rules without marring them, and the wing nut locks the screw.
Capture and transfer an inside measurement
- Loosen the clamp enough for the rules to slide freely.
- Place the rule ends against the two opposing inside faces. Keep the rules aligned with the dimension you need to capture.
- Snug the clamp and lock the screw without letting either end slip from its contact point.
- Remove the gauge. Read the span from its scales or carry the captured setting to the workpiece and mark or set the part to match.
For a critical fit, check the locked gauge or the transferred cut against the opening before committing to final assembly. This is a sensible verification step, not a published accuracy test.
Choose the method that suits the job
| Method | What it captures | What you do after contact | Best fit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sliding-rule clamp or bar gauge | An adjustable span held between two inside faces | Lock, remove, then read or transfer | Repeated shop use or transferring an opening to a workpiece | Contact can shift while locking; no cited tolerance |
| Fixed spacer plus tape | A known spacer length plus the remaining distance | Read the tape and add the spacer length | A simple one-off measurement | Requires an accurate spacer, a tape reading, and addition |
| Marked story stick | Locations and relationships for a layout, rather than only one adjustable span | Align marks and transfer the layout | Repeated cuts, cabinet layout, drawers, or room layout | Overloaded marks can become confusing; it is not a sliding gauge |
Use a fixed spacer when you do not need a lockable gauge
A fixed spacer is a simple alternative when a sliding tool is unnecessary. Cut a piece of wood to a precise, easy-to-add length, such as 10 inches. Hold one end against a cabinet side, extend a tape from the other end to the opposite side, and add the spacer’s known length to the tape reading. This helps when a tape blade will not seat fully in the inside corner, but you still have to read the tape and do the arithmetic. Woodcraft’s inside-measurement tip describes this approach.

When a different sliding gauge makes sense
Commercially available versions of adjustable inside gauges are commonly called bar gauges. Fine Homebuilding also describes a homemade alternative distinct from the steel-rule clamp: a short section of 3/4-inch copper pipe, a brass nut soldered over a drilled hole, a 1-inch-long 1/4-inch machine screw with a knob, and a 3/4-inch dowel split lengthwise. Loosen the screw, slide the dowel halves until they bear against the target faces, tighten, and transfer the setting. The described example is an inside measurement for a window jamb. Fine Homebuilding’s story-stick article also notes optional nail points for outside measurements and beveled dowel ends that can tuck into 90-degree corners for diagonals in drawer boxes or picture frames.
Keep measuring sticks and layout story sticks distinct
A short adjustable gauge captures one span. A marked story stick records a series of locations, sizes, or relationships so a layout can be repeated without repeatedly reading a tape. For marked layout sticks, Woodcraft recommends light-colored plywood 1-1/2 to 2 inches wide so pencil marks are visible. When two long sticks are used together to span a wall, its guide recommends a combined stick length about 20–25% greater than the target length. That guidance applies to long layout sticks, not the compact sliding-rule gauge. Woodcraft’s story-stick guide discusses cabinetry, repeated cuts, drawers, and room layouts.
