A DIY rotocaster turns a closed mold slowly on two axes while liquid resin cures, helping resin coat the cavity and form a hollow part. A practical small-machine design uses a nested wooden frame, a belt and gears, and a removable mold holder. The mold is made separately; the machine rotates it.

What a DIY rotocaster does

In this project, “rotocasting” means rotating a closed mold containing curing liquid resin. It is not centrifugal casting of molten metal. The goal is to distribute resin around the mold’s interior to create a hollow casting. A Fab Academy project likewise distinguishes resin rotational casting from processes that use molten materials (Fab Academy project).

A useful small-machine arrangement has an outer frame and an inner mold frame rotating on axes at right angles. A belt and gears transfer movement between them. The mold sits in a removable holder so it can be loaded, balanced and secured. Make: publishes a build guide with construction steps, moldmaking notes, operating advice and downloadable design files (Make: DIY Rotocaster).

Parts and tools for the referenced design

The Make: build uses ordinary woodworking materials alongside bearings and printed drive components. Treat its list as a starting point, not a universal bill of materials: dimensions and substitutions affect fit, so check the linked plans and current specifications before purchasing.

#1 Best Overall
Pro-tocast 12" Manual Rotocaster - Rotocast Hollow Plastic Resin Casting Machine
  • 95% Assembled. Just attach the base and the plates and you're all set!
  • Plate Size: Approx. 12" X 12"
  • Overall Size: Approx. 26" X 23" X 18"
  • Weight Limit: 8 lbs (DO NOT exceed 8 lbs when the plates are fully extended)
  • All Pro-tocast rotocasters are proudly hand-produced in the U.S.A. using unfinished wood and 3D printed pulleys and gears.
  • Frame and holder: pine boards, plywood and corner brackets.
  • Fasteners and adjustment hardware: nuts and lock nuts, wing nuts, washers, threaded rod, hex bolts, wood screws, screw eyes and cable ties.
  • Rotation components: six bearings (common skateboard bearings are suggested as an example), pulleys, a timing belt and 3D-printed pulley and bevel-gear parts.
  • Optional drive: a geared motor with belt.
  • Tools: a hand or powered saw, drill and bits, square and clamps.

The cited build’s wooden frame and plywood holder support the nested-axis arrangement. Follow its design files for exact dimensions and assembly; a parts list alone does not establish compatible sizes or tolerances.

Build and balance the machine

  1. Build the stand and frames. Assemble the outer support and inner mold frame according to the design. Fit the bearings, belt, pulleys and bevel gears so motion can transfer between the two perpendicular axes.
  2. Install the removable holder. The holder needs to retain the closed mold while allowing its position to be adjusted. Do not clamp it so tightly that it distorts the mold.
  3. Check rotation before casting. Place the empty mold assembly in its holder and turn the mechanism slowly. Shift the mold in the holder until it rotates smoothly and is balanced.
  4. Stabilize the stand. The Make: project advises clamping the stand to the work surface during operation. This is guidance for that design, not a complete machine-safety standard.

Make the mold and prepare a first casting

The mold is a separate, essential part of the setup. In the cited workflow, a silicone mold is formed around the model, allowed to cure and then opened with a keyed cut so it can be closed again around the casting resin. Make: names Mold Max 30 as its example mold-making silicone; it is an example, not a claim that it is the only suitable mold material.

Pro-Tocast 18" Manual Rotocaster - Rotocast Hollow Plastic Resin Casting Machine
  • 95% Assembled. Just attach the base and the plates and you're all set!
  • Plate Size: Approx. 18" x 18"
  • Overall Size: Approximately 38" X 33" X 27"
  • Usable Space: Approx. 18"(l) x 13.5"(w) x 14"(h)
  • Weight Limit: 15 lbs (DO NOT exceed 15 lbs when the plates are fully extended)
  1. Make and close the mold. Follow the selected mold material’s instructions and ensure the cured mold closes securely around the cavity.
  2. Measure the model’s volume. Use that estimate to choose a starting resin quantity. The Make: example suggests resin equal to about one-quarter to one-half of the object volume; this is project-specific guidance, not a universal formula.
  3. Mix the resin as specified. The build uses Smooth-Cast 65D as its example two-part resin and instructs readers to mix thoroughly according to the product directions. Check the current manufacturer’s technical and safety documents for the resin you choose.
  4. Load and secure the mold. Pour the resin into the mold, close it, and fit it into the holder. Secure it firmly without deforming the mold, then recheck balance and smooth rotation.
  5. Rotate while the resin cures. The cited machine’s example speed is approximately 10–15 rpm, and the example resin’s stated cure time is 15 minutes. These figures apply to that project’s materials and setup only; resin formulation, mold size, ambient conditions and machine geometry can change what works.

Operating checks and common problems

  • The assembly wobbles or turns unevenly: stop and reposition the mold in its holder until the assembly rotates smoothly. Do not rely on the machine to compensate for an unbalanced load.
  • The mold changes shape in the holder: loosen and refit the holder so it secures the mold without deforming it; distortion can affect the cavity and closure.
  • The stand moves during rotation: secure it to the work surface as advised for the cited build before continuing.
  • The resin does not behave as expected: do not assume the example speed, fill quantity or cure duration will transfer to a different resin or machine. Consult the chosen resin’s current instructions and safety documents.

Build one or buy a ready-made rotocaster?

A DIY build makes sense if you want a small machine, can work from plans, and are comfortable fitting and balancing a moving frame. Buying may suit a shop that needs a ready-built option. IDM Imagineering describes a machine with an aluminum-profile frame, steel axles, bearings and fixings; its product page cautions against powering it with a drill or modifying it with a user-supplied motor (IDM Imagineering rotocaster).

For bench-scale machines, Pro-Tocast identifies plate size, motor option and supported mold weight as useful comparison factors (Pro-Tocast rotocasters). Check vendors’ current product details directly; availability, pricing, shipping and lead times can change.

Resiners AirFast Resin Curing Machine with Large Tray for Epoxy Resin Molds
  • 2-Hour Curing: CURE AIR cuts curing time from 24 hours to 2 hours. The machine provides a controlled environment for the curing process, ensuring a consistent and efficient cure, which will greatly accelerate epoxy resin curing. No need long-time wait anymore
  • Winter Preheating: On cold days, preheat the epoxy resin bottle in this machine for half an hour before mixing. This can effectively reduce the viscosity of the liquid, making it easier to pour and stir, while also minimizing the formation of bubbles
  • Auto Curing: No need to set time and temperature yourself. Just slightly touch the power button, and the temperature will change automatically to cure resin evenly and finely in 2 hours. This is the secret to how Resiners is special from the others
  • Visualized Curing: Resin curing process becomes visible for CURE AIR is equipped with a transparent lid. You can see the wonderful fusion of different colors during the process. The cover also prevents dust or other drops from damaging your resin crafts
  • Upgraded Tray: CURE AIR has upgraded the tray in size, height, and stiffness. The dimension of the new tray is 11.8*8.5*1.8 inch, fit for resin molds under 1.8" high. With support under the center of the tray, it will be level and will not wrap even hold heavy resin molds
