Decide whether you want a quick annual display or a longer-lived perennial meadow, prepare a suitable seedbed or adapt your lawn, then plan seasonal cuts that leave room for flowers and wildlife.
What makes a meadow garden?
“Meadows are simply mixtures of grasses and wildflowers,” according to the RHS Advice Team. A meadow can be a small patch, a section of a border or a larger grass area. Mown paths can make taller planting easier to explore, while leaving some grass uncut through the growing season provides a refuge for wildlife.
Choose the kind of meadow before buying seed. Annual mixes are often bright and quick to flower, but usually need to be sown again each year. Cornfield-style annuals may include poppies and cornflowers. Perennial meadows combine flowers and grasses for a lasting planting; they are usually better suited to relatively poor soil, where grasses are less likely to overwhelm flowers. Yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor) is a partial parasite on grasses and can help reduce their vigour. RHS guidance distinguishes British wildflowers from ornamental mixes that may include non-native species.
How do I choose a site and plant mix?
Most meadow plants prefer an open, sunny position, though some mixes can tolerate light shade or suit woodland-edge conditions. Match the mix to the actual site: consider local climate and geography as well as soil and light. A UK mix should not be assumed suitable in another region; look for locally appropriate species and seed provenance.

For a UK perennial meadow, the RHS gives examples including common knapweed (Centaurea nigra), ox-eye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), field scabious (Knautia arvensis), harebell (Campanula rotundifolia) and yellow rattle. Treat these as UK examples, not a universal planting list. Check the species in any packet and its stated sowing rate before purchase.
How do I start a wildflower meadow from seed?
For a new wildflower patch in the UK, the RHS recommends sowing in mid-spring (April) or early autumn (September); local weather can affect the best timing. Start with prepared, open soil: wildflower seed scattered into established grass usually struggles to establish.

- CREATES A BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE - Our Wildflower and Meadow Grass Mix contains over 25 annual and perennial wildflowers, hard fescue grass seed, and birdsfoot trefoil. It's perfect for creating a natural landscape with little maintenance.
- FLOWERS INCREASE EACH YEAR - This seed mixture can reseed itself. The annual wildflowers produce flowers the first year and the perennial wildflowers will reseed themselves, providing even more color and beautiful blooms every year after.
- PERFECT FOR SLOPES & POOR SOIL - This is the ideal seed mixture to plant in areas that you don't want to mow, such as on slopes or in poor soils that you can't maintain.
- IDEAL GROWING CONDITIONS - The flowers in this mixture like full sun best but some grasses, such as hard fescue and birdsfoot trefoil, will grow in partial shade. The best time to apply is April through June or mid-November through December.
- COMPLETE COVERAGE - This 1 lb bag covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. The germination time for Wildflower & Meadow Grass Mix is 21 - 40 days.
- Measure and calculate. Check the packet rate and measure the area. As general UK guidance, the RHS gives about 2 g/m² for a pure wildflower mix and 5 g/m² for a wildflower-and-grass mix. These are practical sowing quantities, not guarantees of a particular result.
- Prepare the seedbed. Fork over the soil, remove weeds and large stones, then rake the surface level.
- Sow evenly. Mix the seed with a small amount of dry sand to make distribution easier. Scatter half in one direction and the rest across it.
- Firm and water. Lightly press the seed into contact with the soil using the back of a rake; do not bury it deeply. Water gently if dry weather is expected, and protect the seed from birds if needed.
- Care for seedlings. Water weekly during dry weather. Remove vigorous weeds selectively if they would outcompete the chosen flowers. If you want the planting to self-sow, allow flowers to drop seed.
The RHS says seedlings may appear within a couple of weeks and some annuals may flower in less than two months, but timing depends on species and conditions. Those estimates should not be assumed for perennial meadows.
Can I turn my lawn into a meadow?
There are two practical approaches, depending on whether you want to keep most of the existing lawn or create a new meadow area.

Encourage flowers already in the lawn
For a low-disruption change, mow less often and stop feeding the lawn or using lawn weedkillers so existing flowering plants can bloom. This approach makes use of what is already growing rather than introducing a new seed mix.
Add species to the grass
To introduce additional flowers, plant wildflower plugs or raise seed and plant out seedlings. Simply scattering seed over established grass usually does not work. If you want a meadow sown from seed, prepare an open seedbed and choose a mix suited to the site. Plugs or ready-planted wildflower turf are alternatives when you want to simplify establishment, but the RHS sources cited here do not compare their cost or success rates.

When should I cut a wildflower meadow?
Cutting is part of meadow management, not just tidying. For a perennial meadow, the RHS describes a hay cut in early summer as a way to check grass dominance; leave a flower-rich area uncut in spring to support pollinators, and retain an uncut section through summer if possible. For larger meadows, RHS advice is not to mow until after the beginning of August as a precaution for nesting birds. Inspect long grass before cutting because small mammals, amphibians and reptiles may be sheltering there.
For infrequently cut long grass, a hand scythe, power scythe or strimmer is more suitable than a conventional lawn mower, according to the RHS. Do not mow wet or frosty turf: doing so can damage the lawn and compact the soil.

Annual meadow stems can remain standing over winter, providing cover for invertebrates and seed for birds. If you are reseeding, clear them in February. Avoid routine fertiliser in a perennial meadow: relatively poor soil helps flowers compete with grasses.
Why choose a meadow garden?
Meadows offer more than a different look for a lawn. The RHS wildlife gardening page states that 96% of diverse, species-rich meadows have been lost since the 1950s; that is the RHS figure as presented on its page, with a 2026 copyright year, not an independently verified new measurement. A thoughtfully chosen patch can add flowering plants and habitat to a garden while remaining manageable through deliberate mowing, paths and an uncut refuge.
The RHS advice linked here is UK-oriented. In other regions, use locally appropriate species, seed provenance and seasonal timing rather than transferring UK plant lists or calendar dates directly.
