Make a simple garden toadstool by turning an inverted terracotta pot into a stem and placing a painted saucer on top as the cap. Add contrasting spots or another design, let the paint dry, then secure the pieces. For a more sculpted ornament, a cement-and-sand method shapes the cap and stem separately before joining them.
Choose a toadstool-making method
| Method | How the shape is made | Assembly and finish | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terracotta pot and saucer | An inverted pot forms the stem; a saucer forms the cap. | Crafts by Amanda describes painting the pieces, adding white spots, and joining them with hot glue. Resene and Habitat by Resene also show variations using a pot and a saucer or plate. | The tutorials provide examples, not comparative tests of outdoor durability or universal paint suitability. |
| Cement and sand | Shape a separate cap and stem from a workable cement-and-sand mixture. | Love Where You Live describes drying the forms, attaching them with more cement, drying again, and applying outdoor paint or varnish. | It involves cement and staged drying. The guide’s timing should not be assumed to suit every mix or climate. |
For a first project, the pot-and-saucer version uses ready-made forms and requires less shaping. Choose the cement route if you want to form the silhouette yourself and are prepared for the extra mixing, shaping, and drying stages.
Make a terracotta pot-and-saucer toadstool
Gather the materials
- A terracotta pot and a saucer sized to create the stem-and-cap proportions you want
- Paint suitable for the surfaces and the intended outdoor exposure
- A brush and a surface covering for the work area
- Hot glue, as used in the Crafts by Amanda tutorial, or another adhesive whose label identifies it as suitable for the materials and conditions
For a classic red-cap look, paint the saucer a bright color and add contrasting white spots after the base coat dries. You can also use a different color scheme or decorative pattern; the pot-and-cap form is the key to making the object read as a toadstool.
Paint and assemble
- Prepare the pieces. Brush away loose dirt and let the terracotta dry before painting.
- Paint the pot and saucer. Apply the paint according to its label. Crafts by Amanda uses white multi-surface paint on the pots and colored paint on the saucers; that tutorial also paints the inside of the pots and allows paint to dry between coats.
- Add the decoration. Once the base coat is dry, paint spots or another design on the saucer. Let the decoration dry before handling the pieces further.
- Join the pieces. Turn the pot upside down. Center the saucer over it, with the saucer’s underside resting on the pot’s base, and attach the two using an adhesive appropriate for the materials and outdoor conditions.
- Let the assembly set. Follow the adhesive’s label before moving or placing the ornament outside.
Paint drying and adhesive setting are separate stages: a piece can feel dry to the touch without the product being ready for outdoor exposure or full use. Follow the specific product directions for drying, curing, substrate, and exposure.

Make a shaped cement-and-sand version
Love Where You Live describes mixing two parts sand with one part cement, then adding water until the mixture is workable. Its method forms a cap using tights over a cup and forms the stem in a lined paper cup. The parts are dried, attached with more cement, dried again, and finished with outdoor paint or varnish.
- Mix the material. Combine two parts sand with one part cement and add water gradually until workable, following the product’s safety and handling directions.
- Shape the cap and stem separately. The guide uses tights stretched over a cup for the cap and a lined paper cup for the stem.
- Dry the components. Allow the forms to dry before joining them. The guide describes staged drying, but its timing is not a universal schedule for every cement mix or climate.
- Assemble and dry again. Attach the cap and stem with more cement and allow the joined form to dry.
- Apply the finish. Use outdoor paint or varnish as described in the guide, and follow the selected product’s instructions for cement, outdoor exposure, and cure time.
Try a lighted or sculpted variation
- Lighted terracotta toadstools: VBS Hobby describes using terracotta pots, weatherproof acrylic paint, acrylic shapes, and an outdoor LED light chain. Check the paint and light-chain labels for their intended surfaces and outdoor use rather than assuming that every product with a similar name is suitable.
- Small clay mushrooms: Dala describes making decorative mushrooms from air-drying clay and mentions decorative varnish. This is a sculpted option rather than a pot-and-saucer construction.
Choose paint, finish, and placement carefully
The cited projects show examples of multi-surface paint, weatherproof acrylic paint, outdoor paint, and outdoor varnish. They do not establish a tested service life or prove that an unspecified coating will protect every project through every kind of weather. Check the chosen product’s label for compatible surfaces, outdoor exposure, drying and curing time, and whether or when reapplication is needed.

Place the finished ornament where it is stable and unlikely to be knocked over. The tutorials do not provide a tested size, weight, wind rating, or stability comparison, so do not assume that a glued pot-and-saucer or a shaped cement ornament is safe in every location. If stability matters, consider the ground and exposure at the intended spot before assembling or placing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep garden ornaments distinct from real fungi
A decorative craft toadstool is an ornament, not a living mushroom. The RHS Advice Team explains that “There has never been a precise definition of what makes a fruiting body a toadstool, and there is no clear distinction between toadstools and mushrooms.” For actual unknown mushrooms in the garden, the RHS advises wearing gloves or washing hands after handling them. That guidance concerns wild fungi, not the paint or cement used for this craft.
