The City of Joondalup received the award for the centre’s $9.1 million refurbishment, completed in May 2023.
What the 2024 award recognised
The City of Joondalup announced the award on 24 June 2024. It recognised the refurbished Craigie Leisure Centre as a community facility, rather than naming a construction contractor as the recipient. The City’s announcement describes the project and award: City of Joondalup’s 24 June 2024 announcement.
The refurbishment cost $9.1 million. The City contributed $6.2 million and the State Government $2.9 million, according to the City’s annual report. Hodge Collard Preston designed the project, and BE Constructions carried out the work in two parts. The City reported that the refurbishment was complete in May 2023.
What changed in the refurbishment
The award submission described an inclusive facility with accessible features, high-tech gym equipment and more exercise space. The City said the 1,200-square-metre gym gained room for circuit and small-group training. These are the project’s features as described by the City and in its award entry, not an independent accessibility or performance audit. More than 12 months after completion, the City reported that the centre hosted more than 150 group fitness classes a week. That figure describes the reported schedule at the time of the 2024 announcement, not a current timetable.
How the City described the result
The City reported a 56% increase in membership over the 12 months before its June 2024 announcement, saying the growth arrived four years ahead of schedule. The award submission also described 56% growth, which it said had not been forecast until 2028. This is a dated claim by the City and its award entry; it is not a current membership figure. The cited sources do not provide underlying membership data or an independent audit.
In the announcement, then-Mayor Albert Jacob praised the centre’s staff and the relationship between workers and users, calling the facility “world-class.” Those comments are his view as mayor, not an independent assessment of the project.

Visiting the centre today
Craigie Leisure Centre’s official site describes activities including swimming, fitness, sports and children’s programs. Its visit page lists the address as Whitfords Avenue, Craigie WA 6025, along with accessible parking, a drop-off and pick-up area, accessible toilets, facility bookings, a café and a swim shop. Check the official visit page for current hours and prices, which can change.
Do not confuse it with the 2026 awards
In 2026, LIWA Aquatics listed Craigie Leisure Centre as a winner of the Peter Hobson Community Impact Award and Metropolitan Facility of the Year.
