Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) is the best-supported choice for a room that is both dim and relatively cool. North Carolina State Extension describes it as shade-tolerant and able to handle a range of temperatures, but does not specify a safe minimum or establish frost tolerance. Low-light tolerance and cold tolerance are separate traits, so a plant recommended for a dim room is not automatically suited to a cold one.
Which houseplants can handle a cool, dim room in winter?
Cast iron plant: the strongest combined fit
Cast iron plant is a practical first choice when indoor light is limited and the room runs cooler than the rest of the house. North Carolina State Extension says it tolerates shade and a range of temperatures, and identifies it as suitable for low-light indoor areas and pots. That guidance supports describing it as comparatively cool-tolerant among foliage houseplants—not cold-hardy or frost-proof. No minimum indoor temperature is established in the cited guidance. ZZ plant: low-light tolerant, but keep it warm
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) tolerates low natural light, but that does not make it a suitable choice for a cold room. UF/IFAS describes it as a tropical plant that prefers 65–90°F and says injury may occur below 50°F. Choose it for a dim space that remains warm, rather than a chilly windowsill or drafty room. UF/IFAS Extension: ZZ Plant; University of Connecticut: ZZ Plant.
Pothos, philodendron and snake plant: consider for normally heated rooms
Illinois Extension lists pothos, philodendron and snake plant among options for lower-light locations, including north-facing spaces. The cited guidance does not establish cold-room thresholds for these plants, so treat them as low-light candidates for ordinarily heated rooms—not as proven choices for the coldest spot in the house. How to choose for both light and temperature
Assess the room on two separate axes: how much usable light it receives and how cool it gets. Also consider whether the plant will face a cold draft, touch a chilly window, or be exposed to freezing temperatures. The available guidance supports shade tolerance for cast iron plant, but does not provide its minimum safe temperature; do not treat a general claim of temperature range as a guarantee against cold injury.
- Dim but comfortably warm: ZZ plant, pothos, philodendron or snake plant may suit the light conditions, subject to their other care needs.
- Dim and relatively cool: Cast iron plant has the strongest combined support among these choices.
- Drafty, near-freezing or freezing: Do not assume any of these plants will be safe. Measure the temperature where the foliage and pot sit and seek species-specific guidance before placing a plant there.
Winter care for a low-light room
Use the brightest indirect light available
Low light means less light than a sunny window, not darkness. Indoor light intensity can decline in winter, and supplemental lighting may be needed in some homes, according to Illinois Extension. Place plants in the brightest indirect light available; rotate them periodically if growth becomes uneven. If natural light is inadequate, consider a grow light. The cited extension guidance does not set a universal fixture type, distance or daily lighting duration. Illinois Extension: Houseplants and Indoor Lighting.

Water cast iron plant sparingly in winter
North Carolina State Extension advises watering cast iron plant sparingly during winter; its general profile describes regular watering from spring through fall. Avoid following a fixed calendar schedule: soil, pot size, room temperature and available light all affect how quickly a pot dries. North Carolina State Extension: Aspidistra elatior.
Protect plants from cold spots
Keep foliage away from cold drafts and freezing windows. A room thermometer can help identify a cold windowsill or draft, but the measured temperature should not be treated as a species-specific safety threshold. For very cold rooms, get guidance for the particular plant rather than relying on a broad low-light recommendation. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension: Growing Indoor Plants with Success.
