Yes, solar, batteries and UPS-style continuity can work together—but only when the equipment is designed as a coordinated system. A conventional grid-tied solar array usually shuts down during a blackout; backup requires an inverter and battery system that can safely disconnect from the grid, form a local supply and serve the intended circuits. A plug-in UPS is not a solar controller, and separate UPS outputs must not be connected in parallel unless their manufacturer explicitly supports that arrangement.
What happens to solar power when the grid goes down?
A standard grid-tied solar-only system generally stops supplying power during an outage. Its inverter shuts down to prevent electricity being sent onto utility lines while workers may be repairing them. The Australian Government’s Solar Consumer Guide says very few grid-connected solar-only systems provide blackout backup for this reason.
Solar can continue serving loads during an outage only if the system is designed to operate while disconnected from the grid. An islandable solar-and-battery system disconnects from the network and establishes a local supply. Depending on its design, it may power selected backup circuits rather than the entire building. Some systems can also use available sunlight to recharge the battery while islanded.
Having solar panels, or even adding a battery, does not by itself establish that backup will work. Confirm that the exact inverter and battery combination supports backup or islanding, which circuits it supplies, how it transfers to backup, and whether solar charging is supported while disconnected.

How solar, batteries and UPS equipment fit together
A UPS maintains power to connected loads when its input supply fails. The U.S. Department of Energy describes a UPS, for its rules, as a battery charger combining converters, switches and energy storage to maintain load power after input power failure. That definition does not make a conventional UPS a solar charge controller or establish compatibility with a particular solar inverter.
Solar-and-battery systems commonly use one of two architectures:

AC-coupled system
The solar inverter converts the panels’ DC electricity to AC. A separate battery inverter manages battery charging and discharging. This arrangement is commonly used when adding a battery to an existing solar installation, according to the Australian Government guide, although the site layout and equipment compatibility determine the suitable design.
DC-coupled system
A hybrid inverter manages both the solar panels and the battery. Solar DC can charge the battery directly through the hybrid inverter. Confirm that the particular model supports the battery, backup circuits and islanded operation you need; the label “hybrid” alone does not guarantee a specific backup capability.

Can an existing UPS work with a solar inverter?
Possibly, but compatibility is specific to the equipment and its approved topology. Do not assume that a UPS will accept power from every inverter, or that adding a UPS to a solar-and-battery system improves backup automatically. Before combining an external inverter and UPS, have a qualified designer verify input voltage and frequency acceptance, transfer behavior, waveform and load requirements, grounding and neutral switching, charging behavior, and the manufacturers’ permitted connection arrangement.
Never connect separate UPS outputs together unless the units are designed for paralleling and use the required circuitry. Schneider Electric warns that separate UPS units connected in parallel can “fight” each other, malfunction or be damaged; its guidance says paralleling requires special circuitry incorporated into the UPS. See its UPS output paralleling FAQ.

For fixed wiring and battery integration, follow manufacturer instructions and use a qualified installer. IEC 62040-1:2017, consolidated with amendments in 2021 and 2022, sets safety requirements for specified low-voltage UPS equipment with energy storage; the IEC says equipment must be installed, operated and maintained as prescribed by its manufacturer. The standard’s scope does not certify an arbitrary solar-plus-UPS combination. See the IEC publication.

Battery capacity and inverter output answer different questions. Capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), indicates stored energy; rated output, measured in kilowatts (kW), indicates how quickly the system can deliver it. A large-capacity battery may still be unable to run several high-demand appliances at once if the inverter’s output limit is too low.

The Australian Government guide gives about 10% as a typical energy loss for a lithium-ion battery when charged and discharged. Treat that as an indicative general figure, not a guaranteed efficiency for a particular product or installation. The same guide explains the distinction between capacity and power and advises considering warranty and independently tested products: Solar Consumer Guide: batteries.
Check grid-connection rules before installation
Approval and notification requirements vary by location. In Wales, the Welsh Government’s technical note, first published 2 June 2026 and updated 11 September 2026, says the distribution network operator (DNO) must authorize grid-connected generation and storage even where no export is intended. It identifies G98 and G99 routes according to capacity and arrangement, and says generation and storage capacities are considered cumulatively. Export limiting or island mode can also bring G100 into consideration.
For Wales, the note describes G98/G99 thresholds of 3.68 kW for single-phase and 11.04 kW for three-phase connections. Where commissioning does not need to be witnessed by the DNO, it says evidence of compliance must be received within 28 days after commissioning. These are Welsh guidance details, not rules to apply in other jurisdictions. Check the current requirements with the relevant network operator and local authority or regulator; the Welsh Government note explicitly calls for site-specific expert advice: Connecting on-site generation to the grid: technical note.
