The City of Bayswater’s 2025 winter planting season delivered more than 3,200 trees across the municipality, from streets and school routes to parks and reserves. The work also included native plants, resident tree giveaways and planting prompted by requests for street trees.

What Bayswater’s 2025 planting figures mean

In a release dated 4 September 2025, the City said more than 3,200 trees would be planted as the season drew to a close. Its later 2024/25 Annual Report records 3,200 trees and 11,345 native plants planted across street verges, medians and public reserves. These are different descriptions: the season-end announcement says “more than 3,200,” while the annual report gives a rounded total of 3,200.

The City’s Greening our City page says it plans to plant around 3,000 trees each year, in addition to shrubs and groundcovers. The 2025 activity included both public-land work and resident-facing initiatives, which should be understood as distinct parts of the program rather than assumed to be identical categories within the annual-report total.

Where trees were planted

Noranda roundabout and native planting

At the Crimea Street and Malaga Drive roundabout in Noranda, the City planted 40 Paperbark and Banksia trees alongside 3,000 native plants. The project received $50,000 through the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and WALGA Urban Greening Grant Program. Mayor Filomena Piffaretti described it as a more vibrant streetscape and a nature corridor linking birdlife with nearby banksia woodland at Lightning Swamp. Those are the City’s stated aims and description, not measured results published for the planting.

How residents were involved

The City said it gave nearly 400 trees to local property owners through its free-tree initiative. Separately, it planted 345 street trees in response to resident requests, a figure the City said exceeded the previous two years. The release directed residents interested in a future free verge tree to submit a request through the City website; check the City’s current process before relying on that instruction.

Why the City is planting

Bayswater’s current target is 20% canopy coverage by 2035. Council amended its former aspirational 2030 target on 27 May 2025, and the City plans to review progress in 2027. The target is a goal, not evidence that the 2025 planting has already increased canopy coverage by a measurable amount.

The City says its Urban Forest Strategy aims to establish a diverse, vigorous urban forest. It also reported trials of tree species endemic to the Goldfields and Wheatbelt to identify drought-tolerant candidates for possible future inclusion in its planting palette. The City’s announcement did not name the trial species or report results, so it is not yet possible to say which candidates will be adopted.

How this fits the wider greening effort

The season’s planting combined street and public-space work with school projects and resident participation. The City also points to the Urban Forest at Riverside Gardens and the tree boulevard along King William Street as other projects contributing to its canopy and shaded public destinations. The published figures describe planting activity; they do not establish a quantified change in shade, temperature, biodiversity or canopy cover from this season alone.
