A specialist cleaning guide includes distilled white vinegar in one specific acid-cleaning procedure, but that is not proof that household vinegar is suitable for routine use or safe for every record. For everyday dust, use an antistatic record brush; for a deeper wash, follow a record-appropriate method using demineralized or distilled water and a disclosed, suitable cleaning agent.
What the vinegar guidance does—and does not—say
The evidence is not a simple universal ban or endorsement. The third edition of Precision Aqueous Cleaning of Vinyl Records, with Change 1 dated March 2024, includes distilled white vinegar in a particular acid-cleaning process. That establishes vinegar as one ingredient in a specialist method; it does not establish that undiluted household vinegar is safe, that a given dilution suits every record, or that vinegar is preferable for ordinary cleaning. The Vinyl Press guide
Ortofon states that it does not recommend solvents of any kind for cleaning records or styli. It also describes washing records in lukewarm demineralized water with a little sulphonic soap. This is conservative manufacturer care advice, not a vinegar-specific compatibility test, so it should not be taken as proof that vinegar damages vinyl. Ortofon’s stylus-care guidance
For an everyday owner, the practical choice is straightforward: skip kitchen vinegar and use a method made for record care. The available guidance does not establish a universally safe vinegar recipe or a head-to-head winner among cleaning fluids.

Choose a cleaning method for the job
| Need | Suitable approach | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Routine surface dust | Fine antistatic record brush | Dry brushing is for loose surface dust, not a substitute for a deeper wash when grime remains. Ortofon recommends an antistatic brush. Ortofon |
| Deeper wet cleaning | A record-appropriate wash using demineralized water and a mild detergent or diluted non-ionic wetting agent, followed by a distilled-water rinse | IASA describes this approach; protect the label, follow the chosen method’s directions, and let the record dry fully before playing. IASA cleaning guidance |
| Convenience for several records | Record-cleaning machine that applies fluid and removes it by suction | IASA describes suction machines, and Ortofon says a machine may be considered. It is optional, and no particular model is established as best. IASA · Ortofon |
IASA advises against record-cleaning solutions whose chemical composition is not disclosed. If choosing a ready-to-use fluid, check the exact product directions and whether it is intended for your record-cleaning method. For example, Pro-Ject describes its Wash it 2 fluid as ready to use and made with demineralized water and cleaning concentrate; that product description is not a comparative performance claim. Pro-Ject Wash it 2
How to clean a record safely
- Remove loose dust first. Use a fine antistatic record brush before playback. Avoid transferring record-cleaning liquid to the stylus.
- Prepare for wet cleaning only if needed. Use a method intended for records and protect the label from liquid. IASA describes demineralized water with mild detergent or diluted non-ionic wetting agent; Ortofon suggests lukewarm demineralized water with a little sulphonic soap. Follow the specific method’s instructions rather than improvising a vinegar dilution.
- Clean gently and rinse as directed. IASA’s described wash uses a soft brush and a distilled-water rinse. Do not assume every fluid or cleaning system has identical directions.
- Allow the record to dry fully before playback. Keep liquid away from the stylus and handle the record by its edges where practical.
- Store it properly. Keep records vertical in a dry place away from heat. Fluance includes these storage recommendations in its record-care advice. Fluance record-care guidance
Clean the stylus separately
Do not use vinegar or record-washing liquid on a record needle (stylus). Ortofon advises against solvents on the stylus and recommends a fiber brush, moved along the cantilever toward the stylus tip. Follow the cartridge maker’s instructions for your specific stylus. Ortofon stylus-care guidance

When a cleaning machine makes sense
A machine is an optional convenience for people washing multiple records or who want fluid removal by suction. IASA describes machines that apply cleaning fluid and then extract it; Ortofon notes that a machine may be considered for ease and cleaning quality. Neither source establishes that a machine is necessary for every collection or identifies one universally superior model. IASA · Ortofon

What to avoid
- Do not treat a specialist vinegar process as a household recipe. The cited guide does not establish a safe dilution for all vinyl records.
- Do not use undisclosed cleaning mixtures. IASA cautions against fluids whose chemical composition is not disclosed.
- Do not get cleaning fluid on the label or stylus. Protect the label during washing and use separate stylus-care guidance.
- Do not make wet playback a routine cleaning method. IASA notes that wetting a record can reduce clicks and pops during wet playback while increasing surface noise on subsequent dry plays.
