Check for an explicit recyclability mark and follow your local recycling program’s rules.
First, identify what kind of receipt you have
Ordinary printer paper
A receipt printed on regular paper with ink or toner is generally handled as paper. This may include a receipt printed at home or by an office printer. Local collection rules still apply. Comieco’s receipt guidance distinguishes ordinary paper from thermal paper.
Thermal paper
Many point-of-sale cash-register receipts use thermal paper. The printer forms the image with heat-sensitive material rather than ink or toner, so the paper’s appearance alone does not establish that it belongs in recycling. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s thermal-paper assessment discusses BPA use and possible exposure pathways that include recycling and recycled paper products; it does not establish that every receipt contains BPA or that all recycling systems handle receipts the same way. When can thermal receipts go in paper recycling?
Comieco’s guidance, dated September 2, 2026, says thermal paper belongs in the paper collection only when the receipt carries an appropriate certification mark and states that it can be recycled with paper. This is guidance for its Italian collection context, not a universal label standard; check your local program’s instructions before relying on the mark. - Marked as recyclable with paper: Check whether your local authority accepts it, then follow its directions.
- No such mark: Do not assume it is recyclable just because it looks like paper. Keep it out of the paper stream unless your local authority explicitly says otherwise.
“BPA-free” does not mean recyclable
A BPA-free label alone is not evidence that a thermal receipt is recyclable. Comieco says its stated certification criteria address the absence of both BPA and BPS phenols; a chemical-content claim and a paper-recycling mark answer different questions.
Why local recycling rules matter
Paper collection requirements differ between communities. If your local recycling authority does not specifically address receipts, consult its current guidance or contact it rather than inferring acceptance from the receipt’s appearance or a general claim about its material. No single rule established here applies to every municipality.

Handling thermal receipts
California’s Proposition 65 FAQ identifies BPS as a thermal-paper color developer. It says BPS warning requirements began in December 2024 and suggests washing hands after handling receipts and choosing an electronic receipt when available to reduce exposure. These are California-specific state recommendations, not a universal estimate of health risk. California Proposition 65 FAQ on BPS
Washington State’s Department of Ecology also published guidance on thermal receipts and bisphenols in July 2025. Neither source means every thermal receipt contains the same chemical or that every receipt poses the same exposure.
