Machining a board’s end or edge is difficult on a conventional flat-bed CNC router because the cutter approaches the stock perpendicular to the bed, while many joints need access to a face that the bed normally supports. The right method depends on the joint, cutter, stock and workholding: accommodate the cutter’s rounded geometry with relief, fixture stock vertically for end access, use purpose-built router-table CNC equipment, or route with a handheld CNC system.

Why ends and edges are challenging on a flat-bed CNC

A standard gantry router cuts downward into stock held flat on its bed. That works well for many face operations, but the bed and gantry can restrict access when a joint must be cut into a board end or edge. Tool geometry also matters: a round cutter cannot leave a perfectly square inside corner. For box joints cut flat on the bed, dog-bone relief can make room for the mating finger; it changes the visible corner, so use it when that appearance suits the project. WOOD Magazine’s CNC joinery examples show why access and corner geometry need to be planned together.

There is no single best CNC setup for every joint. Compare options by whether the cutter can reach the required surface, how rigidly the stock can be held, what toolpath and cutter are available, and how much modification or dedicated equipment the approach needs.

Choose a workflow for the joint and the machine

Approach Access and workholding What it suits Main trade-off
Flat-bed gantry with relief Stock remains flat and held on the bed; the cutter approaches from above. Box-joint fingers and other designs whose inside corners can accommodate cutter relief. Relief changes corner appearance and does not provide access to every board end or edge.
Vertical fixture with off-bed travel A jig holds the workpiece upright near the bed edge so the cutter can reach its end or edge; the machine must provide sufficient travel and clearance. End- or edge-machining operations that fit the cutter, toolpath and machine envelope. Requires a rigid fixture and enough travel beyond the bed; machine-specific modifications or configurations may be involved.
Purpose-built CNC router table Computer-controlled fence and lift positioning support selected joinery operations. Repeated joints supported by the equipment’s apps and fixtures. Dedicated equipment and a more defined set of operations; less flexible than a gantry-style CNC for general work.
Handheld CNC router The tool is guided over a workpiece that can be held on its face, end or edge; accessories support selected tasks. Portable routing operations where the stock can be securely supported and the system’s accessories fit the task. Not equivalent to a bed-mounted CNC: workholding, guidance and accessory compatibility differ.
Conventional router-table jig A fence and suitable fixtures guide stock past a router bit. Box joints and several dovetail styles using a compatible jig and setup. A router-table alternative, not evidence that the jig is CNC-compatible.

Keep a flat-bed setup and design for the cutter

For box joints machined flat, dog-bone relief clears the rounded inside corners left by an end mill. Other joints may need rounded internal corners or a different design. Choose the cutter and relief together: a detail that fits one tool diameter may not fit another.

Fixture stock vertically when the machine can reach it

A vertical fixture can expose a board end or edge while holding the workpiece against cutting forces. The gantry or spindle must travel far enough beyond the bed, and the cutter must clear the fixture and machine structure throughout the toolpath. WOOD Magazine describes an alternate gantry mounting point on some Shapeoko Pro models that positions the cutter about 3 inches forward. That is a source-specific machine detail, not a guarantee for every model or current configuration; verify the machine generation, mounting arrangement and available travel before planning around it.

Check the entire motion envelope before cutting: the workpiece, clamp bodies, cutter, spindle and gantry all need clearance. Secure the stock against movement, and do not assume a bed-edge fixture is safe merely because the cutter can reach the joint.

Use a CNC router table for supported repeat operations

The RS1000 Pro example described by WOOD Magazine uses computer-controlled fence and lift positioning and includes apps for box joints, through and half-blind dovetails, biscuit slots, tongue-and-groove, dowels and locking miters. Those listed operations make it a purpose-built option when the work matches its system. It does not offer all the flexibility of a gantry-style CNC, so compare the required joints and stock-handling needs before choosing it.

Consider handheld CNC routing for accessible workpieces

WOOD Magazine describes Shaper Origin as a portable system that can be used on work held on end or edge, with Plate and other accessories for selected routing tasks. It uses a different workholding and guidance approach from a gantry router or CNC router table. Confirm that the accessory is compatible with the specific machine and available for the intended task; do not treat a handheld workflow as an automatic substitute for a rigid vertical fixture.

Use a router-table jig when CNC is not necessary

For some box joints and dovetails, a conventional router-table jig may be simpler than setting up a CNC. INCRA’s Original INCRA Jig documents box joints and several dovetail types with suitable fences and fixtures. INCRA states that the jig has 1/32-inch incremental rack spacing and 8 inches/200 mm of fence travel. Those are specifications for that jig, not measures of CNC capability or a promise that every joint setup will suit every workpiece.

Match the joint, cutter and toolpath

Box joints, dovetails, finger joints, mortise-and-tenon forms, tongue-and-groove and other joints can all be CNC-machined in appropriate setups. Feasibility depends on which surface the tool can reach, whether the cutter fits the geometry, how the stock is held, and the intended appearance. Start with the actual joint and machine envelope rather than assuming a particular CNC style supports every joint.

Box joints and finger joints

On a flat bed, plan relief for the rounded inside corners where the fingers meet. A finger-joint router bit is another possible cutter choice for suitable machines and setups, but the bit’s description alone does not establish CNC compatibility. CMT lists professional finger-joint router bits for end-to-end and side-to-side joints for material thicknesses from 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) to 36 mm (1-3/8 inches). Confirm that the particular bit is suitable for the spindle, collet, speed range and toolpath on your machine.

Dovetails

WOOD Magazine describes clearing most of the waste with a straight bit before finishing with a full-depth dovetail toolpath. Its article notes that a dovetail bit may not be modeled in some hobbyist control software, so the software representation may need a workaround. Treat this as an example workflow, not universal CAM guidance: verify the tool definition, cutter manufacturer’s instructions and machine’s requirements before running the program.

Mortise and tenon

A mortise-and-tenon joint needs clearance appropriate to the actual cutter, stock and fit. Woodworking Network gives an example in which the tenon is 0.005 inch per side narrower than the mortise, and suggests 0.010 inch per side if the fit remains too tight. These are that source’s example values, not validated settings for every CNC, material or tool. Make a test cut in representative stock and adjust the fit before machining the final parts.

Plan for fit, tear-out and finishing

Joint fit is affected by more than the programmed dimensions. Woodworking Network advises sturdy fixturing because cutters exert force on stock, sharp tooling, and feed adjustments to address tear-out. It also cautions that stock thickness variation can make programmed joints fit poorly, and that finish buildup can add material at the joint.

  • Hold the stock rigidly: Support the work near the cut and make sure clamps cannot shift or obstruct the toolpath.
  • Use sharp, suitable tooling: Select the cutter for the joint, material and machine rather than relying on the joint name alone.
  • Test fit with actual stock: Account for thickness variation and adjust clearance based on a representative sample.
  • Allow for the finish: If finish will build up on mating surfaces, include that in the fit plan.
  • Use CAM allowances deliberately: Woodworking Network discusses stock-to-leave and floor-to-leave parameters as possible ways to compensate for thickness variation. Their use depends on the CAM system and operation; they are not a substitute for checking the stock and toolpath.

These fit considerations apply across the workflow options, but the exact setup changes with the joint and machine. A secure flat-bed workpiece, a vertical fixture and a handheld tool all impose different constraints on access and support.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Identify the joint and the surface to cut. Decide whether the operation is on a face, end or edge, and whether the design needs square or rounded internal corners.
  2. Choose the access method. Use flat-bed relief where it works; otherwise check whether vertical fixturing, a purpose-built CNC router table or handheld routing can reach the required surface.
  3. Verify cutter and toolpath compatibility. Check cutter geometry, spindle and collet compatibility, software tool definitions and the manufacturer’s guidance.
  4. Check clearances and travel. Confirm the cutter can reach the work without striking the bed, fixture, clamps, gantry or other machine parts.
  5. Secure the stock and test the fit. Use rigid workholding and representative material; check for tear-out, thickness variation and the intended clearance before cutting final parts.
  6. Account for finishing. Decide whether finish buildup on mating surfaces affects the clearance and adjust the design or process accordingly.
