Whether a foundation can be placed in three sections depends on the foundation type, joint locations and details, site conditions, approved plans, and locally adopted code. Check the design before dividing the work; the number of pours alone does not establish that the result will meet structural or code requirements.
First, identify what “foundation” means
A continuous footing, a foundation wall, and a slab are different concrete elements. Requirements for a construction joint in one element do not automatically apply to another. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) contains a specific construction-joint provision for certain plain concrete foundation walls, but it is not a universal detail for footings or slabs. See the 2024 IRC Chapter 4: Foundations.
“Construction joint” is the useful design term for a planned break between concrete placements. A “cold joint” may describe a discontinuity where concrete placements have not bonded as intended; simply calling a break a construction joint does not establish that its location or detail is acceptable. The American Concrete Institute’s Cold Joints topic page discusses the term.
What the code says about joints and support
Under the cited IRC provisions, footings must bear on undisturbed natural soil or engineered fill, and exterior walls must be supported by adequate approved systems. The code also specifies that construction joints in the described plain concrete foundation walls be located at points of lateral support, with at least one No. 4 bar extending across the joint at spacing no greater than 24 inches. That requirement is limited to the wall conditions covered by the provision; it should not be copied as a generic footing or slab joint detail.

How to assess a proposed three-pour sequence
Have the responsible design professional review the actual layout and placement sequence. The relevant questions include:

- DESIGNED FOR CONCRETE FORMWORK: Concrete stake is a specialised fixing tool for concrete formwork construction, commonly used for floor slabs, footings, driveways, sidewalks, curbs and braces. It facilitates efficient formwork erection while ensuring dependable performance.
- EASY INSTALLATION: Concrete stakes feature a precision tapered design with sharp, smooth tip. During installation, it swiftly penetrates soil, gravel or hard clay, allowing effortless insertion into the designated position without the need for complex tools or forceful hammering.
- HIGH QUALITY SOLID STEEL: Made of solid steel with high density, strong hardness, rust and corrosion resistance, it effectively withstands external impacts during concrete formwork operations, resisting deformation or fracture. Reusable, it saves construction project costs.
- SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE STABILITY: The 0.2" Dia pre-drilled holes facilitate inserting nails or fasteners during installation, preventing formwork from shifting or loosening when pouring concrete, ensuring the finished concrete surface meets required flatness and precision.
- DIVERSE CONSTRUCTION SCENARIOS: Sizes of 17" L x 0.6" Dia and 12" L x 0.6" Dia meet various concrete formwork needs. For scenarios requiring greater depth and higher fixing strength, or shallow construction areas, you can choose flexibly without additional cutting or splicing.
- Which element is being poured? Confirm whether the work is a footing, wall, slab, or another part of the foundation.
- Where will each joint fall? Its position relative to supports and loaded areas matters; a convenient pour boundary is not necessarily an appropriate joint location.
- How will forces transfer across the joint? Use the reinforcement or other load-transfer detail shown in the approved design. Do not assume a particular dowel size, spacing, adhesive, or installation method.
- What are the soil and excavation conditions? The footing’s support and the sequence of excavation and placement both matter.
- How does the sequence fit the plans, local code, and inspections? Confirm the required inspection timing with the local building department before covering work.
The cited sources do not establish one universally preferred three-pour layout or a standard joint detail for an unspecified project.

Staged pours can serve a different purpose when excavation takes place next to an existing structure. Welsh Government guidance notes that shorter excavation and concreting sections may be needed to avoid undermining the full length of a neighboring structure’s footing. This is a site-protection rationale, not general approval to divide any new foundation into three sections. See Welsh Government guidance on foundations for extensions.

What to do before concrete is placed
- Identify the foundation element and whether the work is new construction or staged work beside an existing building.
- Review the approved foundation drawings for joint locations, reinforcement, and the specified placement sequence.
- Ask the responsible design professional to resolve any proposed change to that sequence or detail.
- Confirm applicable requirements and inspection timing with the local building department before the work proceeds.
