It works as a rope pump: pedaling moves an endless rope fitted with small plugs through a pipe, and those plugs carry water upward. The bicycle supplies motion; it does not pump or pressurize the water directly.
How the bike-powered pump works
- Pedaling turns the drive wheel. The wheel pulls the endless rope through the pump assembly.
- A guide at the bottom turns the rope back. The rope circulates around the lower guide in the water source and rises inside the pump pipe.
- Plugs move water up the pipe. The close-fitting plugs act like pistons. Water occupies the spaces between them and travels upward as the rope moves.
- Water exits at the top. The pipe widens near the top, where a tee or outlet arrangement directs the water sideways.
This is the general rope-pump principle described by Make: and Ropepumps.org. The available descriptions do not establish the exact video build’s gearing, dimensions, flow rate, or maximum lift.
What are the white pieces on the rope?
They are plugs, also called pistons—not cups or small reservoirs. Their fit inside the pump pipe is close enough to move water upward, while allowing the rope and plugs to circulate. The water is carried in the spaces between successive plugs rather than scooped up by cup-shaped parts.
What the bike contributes—and what it does not
The bicycle is a drive source for the rope mechanism. Rope pumps can also be powered by hand, a horse, a motor, wind, or solar power, according to Ropepumps.org. The basic lifting action remains the moving rope and its plugs.

Pedal power compared with hand power
Ropepumps.org reports that pedal operation can be sustained longer than hand operation, with 50% higher output and 30% higher construction costs. The page does not state a publication year or enough detail about the comparison conditions to apply those percentages to the particular bike pump shown in the video.

- Outlet: It advises an outlet tube about twice the diameter of the rising-main tube.
- Guide and upkeep: It recommends aligning and flaring the guide box to reduce rope friction, keeping rope tension just loose, and lubricating bushings every two weeks or as needed.
Those dimensions and maintenance intervals are source-specific guidance, not universal standards. The cited material does not provide a tested output, lift height, efficiency, or cost for the pump in the title video.

Kiwia’s design perspective is captured in his statement, “In order to invent, you need to know what people need.”
