Janmeja Heir’s Make design puts those parts in a wooden box and uses a PWM speed controller to adjust the motor. Its counter advances once for every four turns of the pickup shaft, so the displayed count must be multiplied by four to estimate spindle turns.
How the winder works
The motor turns a shaft that holds the pickup bobbin. A gear arrangement drives a rotary counter at a slower rate, while two guide rails help direct the wire across the bobbin. A PWM controller varies motor speed; the shaft, counter, pickup mount, and rails all need to be aligned so the wire can feed smoothly and the mechanism can turn without rubbing.
Heir describes the project as a way to shape a guitar’s sound: “Building your own pickup is not only a fun learning project, but it also gives you the ability to fine tune the sound of your guitar and build your own unique tone.”
Parts and tools
The Make project’s parts list includes:
- One 1.5-inch channel mount and one motor mount B
- Optional 3D-printed parts
- One 1/4-inch-to-6mm shaft coupler, two 1/4-inch collars, one 3-inch shaft, and two 5-inch shafts
- 0.250-inch and 0.750-inch 6-32 cap screws, 6-32 Nylock nuts, and M3 25mm screws, washers, and Nylock nuts
- One 1/4-inch-bore flat bearing mount, a rotary counter, and a wood box
- A PWM speed controller, 12V power supply, short counter screws, and hookup wire
- A small Phillips screwdriver, 3/32-inch hex key, pliers, soldering iron, wire stripper, drill, and epoxy or strong all-purpose glue
For the pickup mount, Heir says a wood block with a hole drilled through it can work; a 3D-printed model is another option. The collars and rails guide wire across the bobbin.

Build and align the assembly
- Lay out the mechanism. Position the bearing mount, gears, pickup mount, and guide rails in the box before fastening anything. Check that the gears mesh and that there is room for the counter.
- Check clearances. Leave clearance around the bearing shaft so it does not rub. Place the PWM controller where its dial will not hit the counter gear and the lid can close.
- Prepare the motor wiring. Solder a short wire to the motor leads, observing polarity, then fasten the motor to its mount and channel.
- Align and secure the parts. Fit the motor assembly, counter, shaft, pickup mount, and guide rails. Set the guide rails perpendicular to the box, then fix the components in place once alignment and movement are clear.
Wind carefully and count accurately
Start at low speed. Keep the collars well inside the bobbin edges and guide the wire toward both edges as it winds. The two rails and a smooth wire path help maintain tension and reduce the chance of breaking the fine wire; they do not eliminate the need to guide it carefully.
Heir used thin double-sided tape to attach a pickup. He also mentions winding putty but explicitly says he had not tried it, so the project does not establish it as a tested mounting method.

In this design, the counter is rated for a maximum of 350 RPM and advances once for every four pickup-shaft turns. The counter reading is therefore not a direct spindle-turn count: multiply it by four to estimate pickup turns. Heir says this gear arrangement could be used with a motor up to 1,400 RPM. Those figures apply to this particular configuration, not to other winders or arbitrary replacement parts.
For a faster motor, Heir suggests a chain-and-sprocket drive, naming ServoCity and a 0.25:1 ratio so the counter runs at one-quarter speed. A different ratio changes the relationship between counter movement and spindle turns, so the count must be calibrated to the actual drive arrangement.

Choose a winding approach
| Approach | Control and speed | Turn counting | Wire traverse | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-drill winder | Manual operation with a drill; speed control depends on the drill and operator. | StewMac’s instructions say this method does not count turns. | StewMac discusses a traverse limiter to keep wire within the bobbin. | Uses an improvised setup, but the operator must manage counting and wire travel. StewMac instructions |
| Motorized wooden-box design | DC motor with PWM speed control; the cited gear arrangement specifies a 350 RPM maximum for the counter, not the spindle. | Rotary counter advances once per four spindle turns in Heir’s configuration. | Two guide rails assist wire placement; the operator still guides the wire. | Requires mechanical alignment, a counter, and a suitable motor/controller combination. Make estimated moderate difficulty and 8–16 hours for this project, and listed $0–$50 at publication; those are dated project estimates, not current cost or time guarantees. Make project |
| Earlier motorized Make project | A DC toy motor; its author reported winding a single coil at 850 RPM. | The cited account reports 16,000 turns but does not establish a directly comparable counter setup. | Not stated in the cited project account. | The author reported completing 16,000 turns in about 15 minutes; this is one project’s result, not a benchmark. Earlier Make project |
| Arduino-based automation | Arduino Uno, CNC shield, and two stepper motors; a specific speed is not stated in the cited description. | The blog description says the winding bobbin turns roughly 10,000 times; it does not establish a counter specification comparable to Heir’s. | Not stated in the cited description. | Uses a controller and stepper-motor setup rather than the simpler DC motor arrangement.
