Choose a snowblower by matching its clearing mechanism and power source to the snow you get, the surface you clear, the size and slope of the area, and the space available for storage. For light snow on a short paved walk or drive, a single-stage machine may be enough. For heavier snow, longer drives, or gravel, a properly adjusted two-stage model is often a better fit. Three-stage machines are aimed at especially heavy or wet snow. These are category-level starting points—not guarantees—so check the specifications and manual for the exact model.
Start with the surface you need to clear
Surface compatibility can rule out a machine before clearing width or advertised depth becomes relevant.
- Smooth, solid pavement: Single-stage blowers work close to the ground and are generally intended for paved areas.
- Gravel or uneven ground: A two-stage blower is usually the more suitable category because its auger is designed to stay off the ground. Skid shoes and machine settings still need to be adjusted correctly for the surface.
- Mixed or damaged pavement: Check the manual’s surface guidance and adjustment instructions. A machine set too low may catch on uneven sections; one set too high can leave more snow behind.
Troy-Bilt warns that single-stage blowers should be used only on solid pavement because gravel or stone can be picked up and thrown, creating damage and injury risks (Troy-Bilt’s snowblower selection guidance). Honda also provides surface-selection guidance in its snowblower chooser.
Understand what the stages do
“Stage” describes how a machine gathers and moves snow. It is useful for narrowing the field, but it does not replace checking an individual model’s capacity, adjustments, or manual.

| Type | How it processes snow | Typical use and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Single-stage | The auger gathers snow and throws it through the chute. | Often lighter and more maneuverable; suited to smaller paved areas and shallower snow. Its close-to-ground action makes it a poor choice for loose gravel. |
| Two-stage | The auger gathers snow; a separate impeller moves it through the chute. | Common for longer drives, heavier snow, and gravel or uneven surfaces when adjusted properly. These machines tend to be larger and heavier than smaller single-stage units. |
| Three-stage | An added accelerator helps move snow through the machine, alongside the auger and impeller. | A category aimed at large volumes and especially heavy or wet snow; its extra size, weight, cost, and storage needs may not be worthwhile for lighter conditions. |
Published depth guidance varies. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide describes single-stage gas models for snow up to 9 inches, two-stage gas models up to 16 inches, and three-stage machines for 18 inches or more of wet, heavy snow. Troy-Bilt’s undated manufacturer guidance, accessed October 8, 2026, gives simplified thresholds of up to 6, 12, and 18 inches for those stage categories. Treat these as source-specific guidance, not universal limits: snow type, machine design, and operating conditions matter.
Match the machine to typical snow and area size
Light snow and short paved areas
A single-stage electric or battery model can be a practical choice for shallower snow on a small driveway or walkway. Consumer Reports says most single-stage battery models top out around 6 inches, though some are rated to clear 9 inches. Check the exact model’s rating and keep in mind that battery capacity and conditions affect how much work it can do on a charge.

Midsized paved drives and walks
Consumer Reports describes single-stage gas blowers as suited to level, midsized paved areas with expected snow up to 9 inches. They are relatively light compared with larger machines, but their ground-hugging action makes them unsuitable for gravel.
Long drives, heavier snow, or gravel
A two-stage blower is a common choice when the area is larger, snow is heavier, or the surface includes gravel. Consumer Reports describes two-stage gas models for long, wide drives and snow up to 16 inches; Troy-Bilt’s guidance recommends the category for uneven terrain and regular snow up to 12 inches. These differing figures reinforce the need to check the chosen model rather than assume all two-stage machines handle the same depth.
Rank #3

- Built-In LED Lights: Enhances visibility for early morning or late-night snow removal, ensuring safety and convenience.
Repeated heavy or wet snow
Consider a three-stage model if unusually heavy or wet accumulations are a regular problem and the machine’s capacity matches the conditions. Consumer Reports positions the category for 18 inches or more of wet, heavy snow, while Troy-Bilt lists up to 18 inches in its guidance. A large machine can be unnecessary if those conditions are rare or the area is small.
For battery two-stage machines, Consumer Reports says the category is more effective at 12 inches or less, although some models are rated up to 16 inches. Ratings are model-specific, not a promise that every battery machine will clear those depths equally well.

Choose a power source you can live with
| Power source | Advantages | Constraints to check |
|---|---|---|
| Corded electric | Avoids engine and fuel upkeep. | The cord limits reach and needs careful management while clearing. These machines are generally best suited to paved areas. |
| Battery | No extension cord to manage; available in push, auger-assisted, and self-propelled configurations. | Runtime depends on battery capacity and conditions. Check whether the kit includes batteries and a charger, and whether its battery system matches tools you already own. |
| Gas | Unrestricted by a cord and commonly offered in wider, self-propelled configurations. | Requires fuel and engine maintenance; larger models add weight, storage demands, and complexity. |
Lowe’s describes corded models as generally push or auger-assisted and battery models as available in push, auger-assisted, and self-propelled versions (Lowe’s snowblower buying guide). Configuration varies by product, so compare the exact model and kit contents rather than relying on the power-source label.
Compare practical features, not just clearing width
A wider intake may reduce the number of passes, but it is only useful if the machine also fits the site and the operator. Compare candidates on these points:
- Intake height and clearing width: Relate both dimensions to typical snow depth and the width of paths, gates, and storage access.
- Drive and maneuverability: Check whether it is push, auger-assisted, or self-propelled, and whether steering aids suit slopes, turns, and the operator’s strength.
- Chute controls and throwing distance: Make sure the chute can direct snow where it is safe and convenient to put it.
- Weight and storage footprint: Confirm the machine can be moved, stored, and retrieved in the available space.
- Starting and comfort features: Consider starting method, lighting, and heated grips if they matter for your conditions.
- Warranty and service: Check warranty terms, nearby service access, and availability of parts for the exact model.
Use this checklist before buying
- Measure the driveway and walks, note slopes and tight turns, and confirm where the machine will be stored.
- Identify every surface to clear: smooth pavement, cracked pavement, gravel, or a mix.
- Estimate typical and occasional worst-case snow depth, and describe it as light, wet, heavy, packed, or drifted.
- Shortlist stage types and power sources that suit those conditions; do not treat category depth figures as model guarantees.
- Compare width, intake height, propulsion, chute adjustment, weight, and comfort features across the actual candidates.
- For battery models, verify battery and charger inclusion, capacity, and compatibility. For gas models, account for fuel and engine upkeep.
- Read the specific model’s manual for surface adjustment, operation, and maintenance; verify warranty, service, and parts availability.
Plan for replacement parts and maintenance
Wear and service items vary by model. Troy-Bilt lists shear pins, belts, spark plugs, oil and fuel, skid shoes, keys, and shave plates among items owners may need. Use the operator’s manual or illustrated parts list to identify exact part numbers and compatibility; do not assume a part fits based only on brand or stage (Troy-Bilt’s buying and parts guidance).
Verify the exact model and package
Category guides help narrow the choices, but the final decision depends on the specific machine’s manual, surface recommendations, dimensions, included equipment, and local service support. Product configurations can differ even within a brand or model family, particularly for battery and charger bundles. Confirm those details with the manufacturer or seller before purchasing.
