For occasional wet spills or general cleanup, compare a wet/dry vacuum’s tank, airflow, sealed pressure, hose diameter, filtration, and included accessories against the work you actually do.
Start with the cleanup job
List the materials you expect to collect before comparing models. Wet spills, ordinary workshop debris, vehicle interiors, and fine construction dust place different demands on a vacuum. A general-purpose wet/dry vacuum should not be assumed suitable for hazardous materials: Shop-Vac advises against using its ordinary wet/dry vacuums for toxic, carcinogenic, combustible, or other hazardous materials. Use equipment designed for the material and the applicable work requirements.
- Wet spills: Confirm that the model is designed for wet pickup and identify the wet-pickup filter or sleeve it requires.
- Large debris: Check hose diameter as well as tank size; a narrow hose can clog on bulky material.
- Fine dust: Identify the dry filter and collection bag options available for the exact model. For silica or other regulated dust, follow the task-specific controls rather than relying on a general-purpose vacuum or a filter change alone.
- Vehicle or tight-area cleanup: Check hose length and the included attachments for the spaces you need to reach.
Choose tank capacity for the job and storage space
A larger tank can mean fewer interruptions to empty it during a large cleanup. A smaller unit may be easier to store or move between occasional jobs. Treat the advertised gallon rating as the tank’s volume, not as a guarantee that the vacuum can collect that full volume of liquid or debris during operation. Compare the capacity with the job’s likely debris load and where the vacuum will be kept.
Compare airflow and sealed pressure correctly
CFM and sealed pressure describe different aspects of a vacuum. Shop-Vac defines CFM as maximum airflow measured at the largest orifice, while sealed pressure is suction measured in inches of water. Neither number alone tells you how the vacuum will perform in every setup: hose diameter, attachments, filters, and operating conditions affect the working configuration. Compare both figures when a manufacturer provides them, and note the configuration associated with the specifications.

Peak horsepower is not a substitute for those measurements. Shop-Vac describes “Peak Horsepower” as an industry term used for consumer comparison and says it does not represent the motor’s operational horsepower. Avoid choosing a vacuum on peak HP alone.

These are manufacturer-stated specifications on the linked Shop-Vac listings, accessed in 2026; specifications and availability can change. The examples show why tank size or peak HP cannot stand in for a comparison of the complete model configuration.

Match hose diameter and accessories to debris
Shop-Vac recommends a 2.5-inch hose for large debris because a smaller hose may clog. For other cleanup, check the exact hose diameter and length, included nozzles, and compatibility with accessories you already own. Accessory and hose sizes can vary between models, so do not assume that a part that fits one vacuum will fit another.
Select the correct filter for wet pickup or fine dust
Wet pickup
Shop-Vac’s general guidance is that a foam sleeve is the ideal filter for wet pickup. Check the manual or product listing for the exact vacuum, since filter requirements and compatible accessories vary by model.

Dry debris and fine dust
For fine dust, Shop-Vac recommends a HEPA or high-efficiency cartridge or a bag arrangement when one is available for that vacuum. Confirm what is included, what the manufacturer approves for the model, and whether compatible replacements are available. A filter label by itself does not establish that a vacuum is appropriate for a regulated dust-control task.
Take extra care with silica and regulated construction dust
Silica controls depend on the task, equipment, and applicable standard. OSHA’s construction standard requires employers to avoid dry sweeping or dry brushing where it could contribute to respirable crystalline silica exposure unless wet sweeping, HEPA-filtered vacuuming, or other exposure-minimizing methods are not feasible. For certain tools, the standard specifies dust-collector criteria that include airflow at or above the tool manufacturer’s recommendation, a filter with at least 99% efficiency, and a filter-cleaning mechanism. Other provisions call for HEPA-filtered vacuuming in specified circumstances. These requirements are not met simply by adding a HEPA filter to any shop vacuum.

OSHA’s general-industry guidance says the standard does not require every vacuum to use a HEPA filter, while noting that non-HEPA-filtered vacuuming may contribute to silica exposure depending on exhaust and conditions. Do not treat either statement as blanket approval or prohibition: identify the applicable work activity and follow its controls. - A tank drain for liquid disposal.
- A blower port, if you have a use for it.
- Onboard storage for hoses or attachments.
- Which dry filter, wet sleeve, collection bag, hose, and nozzles come with the vacuum, plus compatible replacements.
- Warranty terms stated for the specific product and region.
A quick buying checklist
- Write down the debris types you expect to collect, including whether wet pickup or fine dust is involved.
- Estimate how often you are willing to stop and empty the tank, then check that the vacuum will fit your storage space.
- Compare manufacturer-stated airflow and sealed pressure without treating either as a complete performance rating.
- Verify hose diameter and length against the debris, work area, and attachments you need.
- Confirm the correct filter or bag for each use and its availability for the exact model.
- If the work involves silica or another hazardous material, identify the applicable exposure-control requirements and choose purpose-appropriate equipment before buying.
