The model’s current availability is unconfirmed; Bowley’s inspected store lists other ROTASERA padlocks, not the Model 543 by name.
What was the Bowley Model 543?
The Model 543 was a padlock introduced in coverage of Bowley Lock Company’s 2018 Kickstarter campaign. It adapted Bowley’s shielded-keyway concept—previously associated with its door-lock designs—to a portable padlock. The distinctive feature was a keyway arranged to make the pins harder to reach and read with ordinary picking tools.
Its pin layout and key
New Atlas reported that the lock used nine pins arranged in two opposing rows, engaged by a two-fork key. Ryan Bowley explained the insertion sequence this way: “The key must be first inserted and then rotated 180 degrees to the top where the pins live.” As described in that report, a slot in the key allows it to travel around an internal shield before engaging the pins. These are launch-period descriptions, not findings from an independent test.
Digital Trends reported that the core was dual-shielded and that the design offered more than 2.3 billion key combinations. That figure was attributed to the 2018 report and is not an independently verified current measurement. The same article quoted Bowley saying, “The common control and feedback that a lockpick offers to a picker almost disappears.”

- HOW TO USE - Ensure the rings inside the cylinder are aligned. If the rings are not aligned, use the key tip to push through the rings, until they are symmetrical. Fully insert the key through the cylinder, then rotate 180 degrees clockwise to release the shackle. Place the lock on the application of your choice, close the shackle and rotate the key 180 degrees anti-clockwise to lock. Remove the key from the cylinder.
Reported physical construction
New Atlas described a 7/16-inch hardened-steel, nickel-plated shackle, a shackle guard, and a quarter-inch-thick hardened bottom plate. Campaign options included aluminum, stainless-steel, and brass bodies. These reported specifications describe the Model 543’s campaign-era design; they do not establish a security certification or comparative performance against other padlocks.
Does “almost unpickable” mean it cannot be picked?
No. The phrase is best understood as a claim of resistance to conventional picking, not a guarantee that the lock cannot be opened. Bowley’s own lock-picking discussion says the Model 543 was opened by TonySanSan using six custom-made tools. The company calls that a “non blind pick”: the picker knew the lock and key and could disassemble the lock, modify tools, and make repeated attempts.

Bowley distinguishes that from a “blind pick,” where the picker begins without prior knowledge of the lock or key. Its account says the known Model 543 opening required custom tools. The company also describes earlier openings of other Bowley locks, including a foil-impressioning vulnerability that it says was addressed in later production. These are the manufacturer’s statements, not an independent evaluation.
Bowley’s practical distinction is between a prepared, repeated attempt with access to the lock and a blind attempt against a lock in use. The company says it is unaware of one of its locks being picked on a door; that is Bowley’s account, not proof of field performance. The available sources do not establish an independent resistance rating or rank the Model 543 against competing padlocks.

Is the Model 543 available now?
The inspected Bowley store lists current ROTASERA door locks and padlocks, including a puck lock and several ABUS-bodied padlock configurations fitted with ROTASERA cylinders. It also lists cylinders and keys. The Model 543 does not appear by name on that page, so its current availability is not established. Do not assume those current products are the same model as the 2018 Model 543.
At the time the store page was accessed, its listed padlocks ranged from $130 to $235 in US dollars. Retail prices and product listings can change, so check the current store listing before relying on those figures.

What to consider when choosing a high-security padlock
The Model 543’s design shows why pick resistance should be only one part of a padlock decision. Match the lock to the installation and the threats it needs to address, and distinguish documented features from marketing language.

- Fit and use: Check the lock’s format, shackle dimensions, and compatibility with the hasp or enclosure you need to secure. A puck lock and a conventional shackle padlock serve different physical arrangements.
- Physical protection: For the Model 543, contemporary coverage described a guarded, hardened-steel shackle and a hardened bottom plate. Those features do not by themselves establish resistance to every kind of attack.
- Evidence behind security claims: Look for independent ratings or testing relevant to your use case. The cited Model 543 coverage and Bowley’s account do not provide an independent rating or comparative test result.
- Availability and exact model: Confirm the model name and specifications on the seller’s current listing. A present-day ROTASERA padlock should not be mistaken for the historical Model 543.
