If your Bowflex Max Trainer M8 has no power, changing resistance, unusual noise, or another problem, match the symptom to the corresponding section of the official M8/M8i service manual before attempting a repair. The manual includes component-replacement procedures, so it is not a blanket guide to owner-level fixes. Confirm your machine’s model and serial label, then use documentation that matches its revision and region.
Start with the correct M8 manual
BowFlex’s manuals page lists an M8i Assembly & Owner’s Manual, including variants shown for different publication periods: BowFlex product manuals. The separate service manual is titled for the Max Trainer M8/M8i and carries document codes dated 2018/2019. Because the available documentation does not establish that instructions apply identically to every production revision or regional electrical version, check your machine’s model and serial label and select the applicable manual.
The service manual groups diagnosis by symptom and includes reset and component-replacement procedures. Its table of contents alone does not provide enough detail to safely reconstruct those procedures here. Follow the instructions in the relevant official manual; do not infer wiring checks, console-opening steps, or repair sequences from a symptom description.
Find the manual section that matches the symptom
No power or display will not turn on
Look for “No Power / Display Will Not Turn On” in the M8/M8i service manual. The available source information confirms that this section exists but does not expose its full diagnostic steps, so use the manual rather than trying unsupported electrical checks or opening the console.

Buttons do not respond, lights are partial, or the needle stops or sleeps
These are separate symptoms in the service manual: unresponsive buttons, partial console lighting, and needle/sleep behavior. Match what the machine is doing to the specific section instead of assuming the problems share a cause.
Resistance does not change
Use the manual’s resistance troubleshooting section. The available information does not include its complete checks; if the manual’s prescribed instructions do not resolve the issue, contact BowFlex support through its contact page.

The machine seems seized, the belt slips, or a roller or pedal concerns you
The service manual has distinct sections for machine seizure, slipping, and roller or pedal concerns. Follow the section for the actual symptom. Its drive-belt replacement procedure is a service procedure, not evidence that replacing the belt is a simple owner check.
Grinding, rubbing, clicking, or squeaking
The manual distinguishes metallic grinding or scraping; rubbing or belt noise; clicking, clunking, or knocking; and squeaking, squealing, or chirping. Identify the noise category as accurately as you can, then consult the corresponding manual section rather than treating every sound as a belt problem.

Heart-rate readings are missing or unreliable
The manual separates contact heart-rate problems from Bluetooth heart-rate problems. Check the section for the kind of reading you use; the two connection methods should not be treated as one fault.
You are considering a reset or component replacement
The service manual includes a reset-console procedure and multiple replacement procedures, but the available source extract does not show their full instructions. Use the applicable manual directly instead of following an abbreviated or guessed sequence.

Use official troubleshooting and maintenance resources
BowFlex’s Troubleshooting & Maintenance article, updated March 9, 2026, links to guidance for console displays, error messages, static electricity, and basic cardio-machine maintenance. These resources can help with general support topics, but they do not replace the model-specific M8/M8i manual for procedures tied to the machine.

Before ordering any replacement part, provide the model and serial information and verify compatibility with BowFlex or the machine’s parts documentation. An M8/M8i drive-belt replacement procedure is documented, but that does not establish an exact part number, current availability, or whether a particular listing fits every M8 or M8i revision.
Quick Recap
Keep troubleshooting within the right boundary
- Use the manual that matches the exact model and applicable revision; do not assume M8 and M8i instructions or regional variants are identical in every respect.
- Match the symptom to its own manual section, especially for distinct display, resistance, noise, heart-rate, and movement issues.
- Treat component replacement as service work unless the applicable manual explicitly establishes it as an owner procedure.
- Verify warranty status and part compatibility with BowFlex before proceeding with service or a purchase.
