The best touch-control cooktop depends first on whether you want induction or radiant electric: touch controls describe how you operate the appliance, not how it heats. Choose induction for fast, responsive heating if your pans are compatible; choose radiant electric for a conventional glass-top option that works with a wider range of cookware. Then confirm the model fits your countertop and electrical setup before buying.
What touch controls do—and what they don’t
Touch controls replace protruding knobs with a flat glass surface. Depending on the model, they may provide digital power settings, timers, control locks, or presets. They do not make food heat faster by themselves; heating performance depends on the cooktop’s technology, zones, power, and cookware.
For current examples, Whirlpool lists individual touch controls and 18 manual power levels on its 36-inch WCIT7536SS induction cooktop. Samsung’s US comparison includes 30- and 36-inch induction products with digital touch controls. LG lists SmoothTouch controls on both induction and radiant electric options. Features vary by model, so check the exact model’s specifications rather than relying on a brand-wide comparison page. Whirlpool WCIT7536SS, Samsung cooktops, LG cooktops
Touch layouts differ in visibility, responsiveness, and ease of use. If possible, try the controls in person; consider whether the markings are easy to read and whether their placement makes accidental activation unlikely.
#1 Best Overall
- PORTABLE INDUCTION BURNER: Duxtop induction cooktop uses 110/120 V 15 amp electrical outlet–standard in all North American homes. ETL listed and built to North American electrical standards. It is lightweight and compact for easy handling and storage
- Choose from 20 preset power levels (100 to 1800 W) and 20 preset temperature level settings (100 °F to 460 °F). With an 83% energy efficiency, induction burner is more efficient than traditional gas or electric stoves
- DIGITAL LCD SENSOR: Touch control panel: child safety lock keeps the cooking and timer settings from being accidentally changed once they have been set; fast boil button; keep warm button (for 1-30 minutes at 140 °F); up to 10-hour timer button
- Induction stoves rely on cookware to heat, so it’s essential to choose magnetic bottom cookware with a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Auto-pan detection will shut off automatically after 60 seconds if no cookware, or the incorrect cookware is detected
- Although induction itself is a noiseless process, there may be high pitched sounds from the cookware due to multiple layers of metals sandwiched together. Please allow the induction cooker to cool down before cleaning
Choose induction or radiant electric
| Consideration | Induction | Radiant electric |
|---|---|---|
| How it heats | Electromagnetic energy heats compatible ferromagnetic cookware. | An element beneath the glass heats the cooking surface and pan. |
| Cookware | Requires compatible cookware. A magnet that sticks to the pan is a useful initial check; verify compatibility with the model’s manual. | Works with a broader range of cookware. |
| Response | Heats cookware directly and generally responds quickly to setting changes. | Retains heat after reducing or turning off an element, so temperature changes are slower. |
| Surface heat | The surface is not heated directly without a pan, but a hot pan or residual heat can warm the glass. | The glass surface can remain hot after shutoff; use hot-surface indicators and allow it to cool. |
| General cost tendency | Not stated in the cited sources. | Consumer Reports says radiant models tend to cost less than induction; specific prices vary. Consumer Reports cooktop buying guide |
When induction is the better fit
Induction is worth considering if speed, responsive control, and efficient transfer of heat to cookware matter to you—and your pans are compatible. ENERGY STAR says induction transfers about 85% of heating energy to cookware, compared with about one-third for gas, and that water may boil in nearly half the time compared with gas, radiant, or coil cooking. These are general comparisons from ENERGY STAR, not promises for every model, pan, or cooking task. ENERGY STAR: Induction cooktops and ranges
Before replacing cookware, test existing pans with a magnet and consult the cooktop manufacturer’s guidance. A magnet test is a quick screen, not a guarantee that every pan will perform well on every zone.
When radiant electric is the better fit
Radiant electric may suit you if you want a smooth glass-top cooktop and do not want to limit your cookware to induction-compatible pans. Its trade-off is residual heat: an element and the glass can stay hot after the setting is lowered or switched off. Allow extra time for temperature changes and pay attention to hot-surface indicators.

Zone layout and cookware size
Check the number, size, and position of the cooking zones against the pans you use most. ENERGY STAR says cooktops are commonly 30–36 inches wide and typically have four to six burners. Some models include bridging or sync zones for griddles and larger cookware, plus cookware sensors or power-sharing behavior. Confirm that a zone layout suits your pots and pans rather than choosing by burner count alone. ENERGY STAR cooktop guidance

Look for clearly described power levels, low-heat performance, boost functions, timers, and lock or shutoff features. More settings can offer finer adjustment, but a feature list does not establish how precisely a particular cooktop performs. For comparative cooking performance, seek independent testing rather than treating manufacturer claims as test results.
Whirlpool says the WCIT7536SS’s Fast Boil with power boost boils water “2x times faster than electric cooktops,” using model WCE77US6H as its comparison. Safety, cleaning, and service
Check for a control lock, hot-surface indicators, and timer or automatic shutoff features. These can help manage use, but do not replace supervision or the model’s safety instructions. Consumer Reports warns that dropped cookware can crack a glass cooktop and sugary spills may stain it. Follow the appliance manual for approved cleaners and tools; do not assume a product safe for one surface is approved for another. Consumer Reports cooktop buying guide
Before purchase, also review warranty terms, the availability of service and parts, and the cost implications of damage to the glass. The cited sources do not establish comparative repair costs or reliability for the models listed here.

Prices, inventory, and incentives are location- and time-dependent; verify them before committing.
How to evaluate current models
Manufacturer pages are useful for confirming stated features and model dimensions, but they do not establish which cooktop performs best under controlled conditions. Consumer Reports says its induction comparisons consider performance, owner satisfaction, and brand reliability, and its electric cooktop coverage reports expert testing. Exact scores and definitive model winners are not established by the cited material here. Consumer Reports cooktop buying guide
- Compare independent test findings for the exact model when available, not just brand or technology claims.
- Match the cooktop’s zone layout and controls to your pans and cooking habits.
- Verify current specifications and installation documents for the exact model number.
- Check local stock, total installed cost, warranty, and service support before deciding.
ENERGY STAR also states that ENERGY STAR-certified electric cooking products are 18% more efficient on average than standard models, as described on its consumer guidance page. This is a category-level claim, not a direct comparison of induction with radiant cooktops. ENERGY STAR consumer guidance
