For a busy household, the best washer is not simply the one with the biggest capacity. Choose a drum that suits your usual loads, confirm the machine fits the laundry space and installation route, and compare the model’s EnergyGuide label. The LG WM6500HWA is a documented 5.0-cu.-ft. front-load option; other candidates include a 5.3-cu.-ft. Samsung front-loader and large-capacity top-load models. Treat these as a shortlist, not a universal test-based ranking.

What matters most when choosing a washer for a big family?

Capacity, measured in cubic feet, gives you a useful starting point, but it does not tell you everything about cleaning performance, efficiency, or how easily you can load the machine. Think about the laundry you actually do: frequent everyday loads, towels, bedding, bulky items, or a mix. Then compare configuration, dimensions, efficiency labels, and the way the washer will be used in your home.

Whirlpool describes top-load washers over 5.0 cu. ft. as large capacity and lists models in its range up to 5.3 cu. ft. That is a manufacturer’s category and brand-specific maximum, not a standard that guarantees the same capacity or performance across brands. Check the specification for the exact model you are considering. Whirlpool’s large-capacity washer guide

Washer What is documented How to use it in your comparison
LG WM6500HWA LG lists a 5.0-cu.-ft. smart front-load washer with ENERGY STAR certification, TurboWash 360, AI DD, and an Allergiene steam cycle. A specific, manufacturer-documented front-load candidate. Verify current specifications and availability; published features are not independent performance test results.
Samsung WF53BB8700AVUS Tom’s Guide lists a 5.3-cu.-ft. front-loader with 24 cycles and app control. A larger-capacity front-load candidate from an editorial comparison. Confirm current product status and specifications with Samsung before buying.
Whirlpool 5.2-cu.-ft. Smart Top Load Washer Tom’s Guide lists a 5.2-cu.-ft. top-loader with a 2-in-1 removable agitator, app control, and 12 cycles. The cited comparison does not provide a model number. Consider it if you want a top-loader with the option to remove the agitator. Identify and verify the exact model before comparing or ordering.
LG WM4200HWA Tom’s Guide lists a 5.0-cu.-ft. front-loader and describes it as a quiet option. A comparison candidate; “quiet” is the publisher’s review assessment, not a universal guarantee for every installation.
Whirlpool WTW8127LC, WTW5057LW, WTW5025SW; WTW6157PB, WTW5020SW Whirlpool lists the first three among its large-capacity top-load agitator models and the latter two among its impeller models. The brand says its top-load range reaches up to 5.3 cu. ft.; that maximum is not assigned to each named model. Use these as official brand leads for a top-load comparison, then check each model’s individual capacity, current status, and local availability.

For the LG WM6500HWA, LG’s product page is the primary source for the manufacturer’s specifications. The Samsung, Whirlpool 5.2-cu.-ft. washer, and LG WM4200HWA descriptions above come from Tom’s Guide’s washing-machine comparison; its cited description carries a July 16, 2025 update date, so confirm model details before relying on it.

Front-load or top-load: which suits your laundry routine?

Loading style affects access, layout, and the machine’s internal configuration. Neither format is automatically the right choice for every big family.

Front-load washers

A front-loader can be a practical fit when you prefer a front-facing door or want to compare machines using the efficiency guidance for that category. ENERGY STAR says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers, and about 25% less than top-load impeller washers. These are broad category comparisons, not a prediction for a particular pair of models. Compare the specific machines’ labels. ENERGY STAR clothes-washer guidance

Top-load washers: agitator or impeller

In a top-loader, an agitator provides a central post; an impeller uses a lower-profile wash plate. Whirlpool says an impeller takes up less drum space than an agitator, and that its 2-in-1 removable agitator can be removed to create extra room for bulky items. These are configuration distinctions, not proof that one design is better for every load. Check the exact model’s instructions and dimensions. Whirlpool’s guide to large-capacity washers

Can a large washer handle a king-size comforter?

Capacity is only part of the answer. Whirlpool says a washer of 4.5 cu. ft. or above should typically be able to handle a king-size comforter, but the item needs room to move during washing. Check the comforter’s care label and the washer manual, and do not force an overfull load. Whirlpool cautions that overfilling can reduce cleaning and damage the appliance over time; some care labels call for a commercial machine instead. Whirlpool’s bulky-item guidance

Compare efficiency using the model’s own label

ENERGY STAR advises shoppers to check the yellow EnergyGuide label to estimate annual energy use and operating costs, and to compare similar models. It also identifies two measures for comparing washers:

  • Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF): a higher value indicates greater energy efficiency.
  • Integrated Water Factor (IWF): a lower value indicates less water use per cubic foot of capacity.

ENERGY STAR reports that full-sized ENERGY STAR certified washers use 14 gallons per load, compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. This is a program-level category comparison, not the exact consumption of a named washer or every cycle. ENERGY STAR clothes-washer guidance

ENERGY STAR also recommends washing full loads when practical and using cold water for ordinary laundry when suitable. The agency says water heating accounts for about 90% of the energy used to operate a washer. Follow garment-care instructions and the washer’s cycle guidance when choosing water temperature. Measure the laundry space before choosing a model

A washer that meets your capacity needs still has to fit the home and be installable. Measure the appliance location and the path to it, and check the exact model’s installation requirements. Account for door swing, nearby walls or cabinets, hookups, and the clearance needed to load and service the machine. ENERGY STAR recommends considering both the washer’s location and whether your household usually runs small or large loads. It notes that dryer drums are usually larger to allow clothes to tumble and air to circulate, so a washer and dryer need not have matching capacities. ENERGY STAR buying guidance

A practical checklist before you buy

  1. Estimate your real load needs. Consider how often you wash, the usual load size, and whether bulky bedding is part of the routine.
  2. Choose a configuration to compare. Decide whether you prefer front-load or top-load access; for a top-loader, compare agitator and impeller options.
  3. Check the exact model’s capacity and dimensions. Do not apply a brand’s largest stated capacity to every model in its range.
  4. Measure the installation route and laundry area. Include door clearance, hookups, and room to use the machine.
  5. Read the EnergyGuide label. Compare annual-use estimates and operating costs for similar models; use IMEF and IWF as efficiency indicators.
  6. Verify current details locally. Confirm model status, specifications, price, stock, and service availability in your market before ordering.

The available specifications and comparisons identify plausible candidates, but do not establish a consistent current ranking for reliability, repair costs, local service, or cleaning performance across these washers. Make those factors part of your final comparison rather than treating capacity or feature lists as a test verdict.
