Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can buy a washing machine for under $400 in 2026, but the honest answer is narrower than most shoppers expect. Under this price point, the best options are usually compact portable washers, small automatic apartment-style machines, semi-automatic twin-tub washers, open-box units, refurbished machines, or a basic full-size top-loader caught during a sale. If you expect a quiet, full-size, high-efficiency washer with premium cycles, large capacity, delivery, installation, haul-away, new hoses, and a flawless warranty all under $400, the math usually will not hold.
On our job sites, the washer itself is rarely the only problem. The bigger issue is the laundry area: old shutoff valves that will not close, rubber hoses that should have been replaced years ago, a standpipe that is too low or slow to drain, a closet with no room to open the lid, or a second-floor laundry room with no pan or leak protection. A $379 appliance can become a $650 to $900 project when the room is not ready.
The right way to shop is to separate the appliance price from the installed cost. If your hookups are solid and your laundry loads are modest, a sub-$400 washer can be a smart buy. If your family runs heavy loads, washes bedding every week, or has an upstairs laundry over finished space, the cheapest washer may be the wrong place to save.
What $400 Buys in 2026
New full-size washing machines in the United States commonly list around $500 to $1,200 or more. Under $400 is still possible, but it usually means you are accepting one of four tradeoffs: smaller capacity, fewer features, sale or clearance pricing, or used/refurbished condition.

- [Large Capacity Twin tub Washer] Auertech portable mini washer has two separate tubs, washing tub and spin tub, allowing you to wash and dry clothes at the same time. The compact and lightweight design makes it easy to fit in bathrooms or closets. Perfect for dorms, apartments, RVs, etc. Note: There is water in the washing machine because it is tested before packaging, we do not sell used products!
- [Powerful Performance] Equipped with a 1300 rpm powerful motor, clothes can be washed quickly and efficiently. Washer capacity: 18lbs, Spin capacity: 10lbs. Recommended maximum water line: 13.5 inches. The transparent window allows you to see the process of washing or spinning. Our mini washer machine can achieve low consumption and save water, while free your hands.
- [Equip with Drain Pump & Adjustable Inlet Hose] This portable washing machine equipped with a drainage pump. You can choose freely drain water to a higher position or a convenient place randomly. You never need to worry about the drainage problem.
- [Separate Time Control & Lint Filter]Users can control washing time, washing mode and spinning time through the three control switches on the panel. There is two water inlets on the panel for connecting the hose to easily add water. With the simple control panel, this mini washer is easy to operate and you can get clean clothes in three steps.
- [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
The most common new washers below $400 are portable or compact models in the 0.9 to 2.0 cubic foot range. These can make sense for apartments, ADUs, RVs, cabins, temporary housing, and one- or two-person households. Some are fully automatic with fill, wash, rinse, spin, and drain cycles. Others are semi-automatic twin-tub machines where you manually move clothing from the wash tub to the spin tub.
A full-size top-load washer under $400 is less common. When it happens, it is usually tied to a holiday sale, a clearance model, scratch-and-dent inventory, an open-box return, or a local appliance outlet. A basic 3.5 to 4.5 cubic foot top-loader may dip near that number, but you should check what is included. Delivery, hoses, haul-away, and installation may be separate.
Used and refurbished washers are the other route. A used machine can cost $100 to $400 depending on age, brand, capacity, cosmetic condition, delivery, and warranty. This category can be a good value if you buy from a reputable local dealer that tests machines and offers at least a short warranty. It is much riskier when buying from a private seller with no return window.

Portable automatic washers
Portable automatic washers are usually the most practical new machines under $400. Typical capacities run from about 0.9 to 2.0 cubic feet, with prices around $150 to $400. Many connect to a sink faucet with an adapter and drain into a sink, tub, or standpipe. They are useful where permanent laundry hookups are not available or where a compact machine needs to be stored between uses.
The advantage is convenience. You get a real wash cycle, spin cycle, and a manageable footprint. The downside is capacity. A 1.0 cubic foot washer may handle a few shirts, socks, and undergarments, but it is not a family laundry machine. A 1.6 to 2.0 cubic foot unit is more useful, but bedding, bulky towels, and heavy work clothes will still be limited.
Before buying one, confirm three things: the faucet adapter fits, the drain point can handle the discharge, and your lease or building rules allow it. Portable washers can cause real water damage when a hose pops loose or a sink backs up.
Semi-automatic twin-tub washers
Semi-automatic twin-tub washers are often priced from about $150 to $300. They use one tub for washing and a separate spin tub for water extraction. They can be useful in RVs, workshops, seasonal cabins, or temporary living situations.
The tradeoff is labor. You fill, drain, transfer clothes, and manage the process more actively than with a standard washer. They can also be awkward if you do not have a good floor drain, utility sink, or safe place to discharge water. We see these as a practical specialty tool, not a direct replacement for a full-size household washer.
Entry-level full-size top-load washers on sale
If you want a normal household washer under $400, watch for sale-priced top-loaders. These are usually basic machines with simple controls, fewer specialty cycles, and either an agitator or impeller design. Capacity often lands around 3.5 to 4.5 cubic feet, which is far more useful for families than a compact unit.
At this price, avoid getting distracted by a long cycle list. The better priorities are a clear warranty, available parts, a known service network, simple controls, and a retailer with a reasonable return policy. A basic washer that drains, spins, and balances reliably is worth more than a feature-heavy bargain model with poor support.
Open-box, scratch-and-dent, and refurbished washers
This is where many homeowners find the best full-size value under $400. A dent on the side panel can save real money if the cabinet is not twisted and the machine was not dropped. Open-box models can also be returns that were never installed.

Inspect carefully. Check for cabinet distortion, cracked plastic, missing drain hoses, missing inlet screens, missing leveling feet, and signs of prior water use. For front-load washers, confirm any required shipping bolts are included if the unit will be moved again. Ask whether the warranty is full, partial, store-backed, or expired. A 30-day local warranty is better than no protection, but it is not the same as a full manufacturer warranty.
Washer Budget Comparison
The table below gives a practical way to compare sub-$400 options. These numbers reflect typical 2026 U.S. pricing, but local sales, delivery distance, stairs, and installation conditions can change the total quickly.
| Washer option | Typical appliance price | Best fit | Main tradeoff | Likely installed total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact portable automatic washer | $150-$400 | Apartments, ADUs, RVs, small households | Small loads, faucet and drain limits | $200-$550 |
| Semi-automatic twin-tub washer | $150-$300 | Temporary housing, cabins, utility use | More manual work | $175-$450 |
| Sale-priced full-size top-loader | $350-$500 | Homes with ready hookups | Limited features, sale timing | $450-$750 |
| Open-box or scratch-and-dent washer | $250-$400 | Budget full-size replacement | Warranty and condition vary | $400-$700 |
| Used or refurbished washer | $100-$400 | Short-term or low-cost replacement | Unknown wear unless dealer-tested | $250-$650 |
Do not treat the right column as padding. Delivery can be $0 to $150. Haul-away can also be $0 to $150. New braided stainless-steel hoses commonly run $20 to $60. A drain pan may cost $25 to $100 before any drain connection work. Basic installation may be $30 to $200 when the hookups are already in good condition. If a plumber needs to replace valves or correct the standpipe, the extra work can exceed the price difference between a cheap washer and a better one.
Capacity: The Number That Decides Whether You Will Hate the Washer
Capacity is where many budget washer purchases go wrong. A compact washer around 1.0 to 2.0 cubic feet can be fine for small, frequent loads. It is not ideal for a four-person household, bulky bedding, heavy towels, muddy sports clothes, or construction workwear.
For most families, a washer around 4.0 cubic feet or larger is more practical. That capacity is harder to find new under $400, which is why open-box, sale, and refurbished full-size machines matter. A smaller washer can still save money if you do laundry more often and avoid overloading it. Overloading is what leads to poor cleaning, off-balance spin cycles, pump strain, and early wear.
As a field rule, if you wash queen bedding, heavy blankets, or several days of family laundry at a time, do not make a 1.5 cubic foot portable washer your main machine. You may spend less on the appliance but more in time, repeated cycles, water use, and frustration.
Installation Costs That Change the Real Price
The washer price is only one line item. The installed cost depends on what is already in the laundry area and how difficult it is to get the machine into place.
Measure the full delivery route before buying. That means the exterior door, entry path, hallway, stair turn, laundry-room door, closet opening, and final service clearance. A washer that fits the closet on paper can still fail at the stair landing. Also check lid or door swing. A top-loader needs enough overhead room to open fully. A front-loader needs room for the door arc and for the user to stand in front of it.
Many full-size washers are roughly 27 inches wide, while depths can run around 27 to 34 inches depending on model and hose clearance. Compact washers vary widely, so do not rely on category names. Measure the appliance body and allow several inches at the rear for hoses and drain routing.
The most common add-ons are straightforward: new hoses, anti-vibration pads where appropriate, a drain hose extension if the included hose cannot reach without stretching, and a washer pan in risk-sensitive locations. The expensive surprises are usually corroded shutoff valves, missing grounding, poor drainage, weak flooring, or a closet layout that prevents service access.
Plumbing, Drain, and Electrical Checks Before You Buy
A washer needs more than a nearby wall. It needs hot and cold water supply, accessible shutoff valves, a safe drain path, and a properly grounded electrical receptacle. If you are moving a washer to a new location, that can become plumbing and electrical work, not just appliance installation.
Supply hoses and shutoff valves
We recommend new braided stainless-steel washer hoses for most installs. Basic rubber hoses may cost $10 to $35, while braided stainless hoses commonly cost $20 to $60. Saving $20 on old hoses is poor risk management when a failed supply line can damage flooring, drywall, trim, and rooms below.

- 【Ideal for Any Space】Whether you live in an apartment, RV, home or dorm, this portable washer is the ideal solution for small spaces. Its compact design and efficiency make it a versatile laundry machine suitable for a variety of living arrangements
Check the shutoff valves before delivery day. They should be accessible, turn smoothly, and stop water completely. Quarter-turn valves are easier to use in an emergency than old multi-turn valves that are stiff or corroded. If the installer cannot shut the water off, many will refuse to connect the machine.
Drain setup
The washer drain hose should discharge into an approved standpipe, laundry sink, or drain connection. Do not shove the hose too far into the standpipe and do not seal it airtight. That can create siphoning or drainage problems. The hose should be secured so it cannot jump out during pump-out.
If an existing standpipe has overflowed before, do not assume a new washer will fix it. Some modern washers pump water out quickly. Slow drains, partial clogs, poor venting, or an undersized arrangement can turn a bargain washer into a water cleanup job. Local plumbing codes and the International Residential Code set requirements for sanitary drainage and plumbing fixtures, so new or relocated laundry plumbing should be checked against local rules.
Electrical safety
A washer should plug into a properly grounded receptacle. Do not use an extension cord as a permanent solution. Laundry areas may require GFCI protection depending on the circuit, location, and locally adopted electrical code. The National Electrical Code is adopted and enforced locally, so requirements can vary by jurisdiction and edition. If the outlet is ungrounded, damaged, loose, or in the wrong location, bring in a qualified electrician before relying on it.

ENERGY STAR washers can reduce water and energy use, but the cheapest machines under $400 are not always certified. When comparing models, look beyond the sale tag. Check annual energy use, Integrated Modified Energy Factor, and Integrated Water Factor. Those ratings give a better view of operating cost than cycle names or marketing language.
For a light-use apartment washer, the energy difference may not justify overspending. For a household running five to ten loads per week, water and energy use matter more. A machine that costs $75 more upfront but uses less water, spins better, and shortens dryer time may be cheaper over several years.
Also consider how the washer affects drying. Better spin extraction leaves less water in clothes. If the washer has a weak spin cycle, the dryer works longer. That matters for electric bills and for wear on clothing.
When a Portable Washer Makes Sense
A portable washer is worth considering when you have limited space, small loads, and no permanent washer hookup. It can be a practical fit for a renter with landlord approval, an ADU, an RV, a guest suite, or a homeowner who wants a small supplemental washer for delicate items or work clothes.

Confirm the faucet adapter type before ordering. Some kitchen and bathroom faucets do not accept standard portable washer adapters without changing the aerator or using a special fitting. Check that the drain hose can reach the sink or tub without kinking. Confirm the sink can accept the discharge volume without backing up. Stay nearby during the first cycle and during every cycle until you trust the setup.
Portable washers are a poor fit where the lease bans them, where the only sink drains slowly, where the faucet connection is fragile, or where a leak would damage downstairs neighbors. They are also not ideal for large households unless you are comfortable doing small loads frequently.
Buying Open-Box or Used Without Getting Burned
Open-box and used washers can be the best path to full-size capacity under $400, but inspect them like a contractor would inspect a delivered fixture.
Look at the cabinet from several angles. A dented side panel may be cosmetic. A twisted cabinet, uneven top, bent rear panel, or rubbing drum is a different issue. Check the lid or door alignment. Look for rust around the detergent area, bleach dispenser, lid hinges, and bottom edges. Smell the tub. Heavy mildew odor in a front-loader may mean neglected maintenance.

Ask what is included. You may need inlet hoses, a drain hose, clamps, leveling feet, manuals, or shipping bolts. Missing accessories are not always expensive, but they eat into the budget and can delay installation. Confirm the return window in writing. For refurbished machines, ask who performed the work and what parts were replaced.
For a private-sale used washer, run a cycle if possible. Listen for grinding, banging, pump noise, and spin vibration. Check for leaks underneath and around hose connections. If the seller will not let you test it, price the risk accordingly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
A straightforward replacement is usually reasonable for a careful DIY homeowner. If the washer location already has working hot and cold shutoffs, a proper drain, a grounded outlet, level flooring, and enough access, installation may take 45 to 90 minutes. You will need a tape measure, adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers, a level, new washer hoses, and help moving the machine safely.
DIY is also reasonable for some portable washers, provided the faucet connection and drain setup are correct and the building allows the appliance. Run the first cycle while present. Watch the supply connection, drain hose, pump-out, standpipe or sink behavior, vibration, and floor movement. Do not leave the washer unattended until you have seen it fill, agitate, drain, and spin without issues.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Hire a plumber when shutoff valves are stuck, leaking, corroded, or inaccessible; when the standpipe overflows; when a laundry sink drains slowly; when you are adding or moving laundry hookups; or when a drain pan needs a connected drain line. Hire an electrician when the receptacle is ungrounded, loose, damaged, missing required protection, or not located safely for the appliance.
For upper-floor laundry rooms, finished basements, condos, and tight closets, professional help can be cheap insurance. A drain pan, leak detector, solid hose routing, and accessible shutoffs matter more in these spaces because a small leak can travel into finished ceilings and walls before anyone sees it.
Permits and Code Notes
Replacing a washer in the same location usually does not require a permit in many areas when no plumbing or electrical systems are changed. Moving a washer, adding a new laundry box, installing a new drain, extending water lines, adding a receptacle, or changing circuit protection may require permits and inspections. Local rules control this, so check with the building department before opening walls or rerouting utilities.
Plumbing codes address sanitary drainage, fixture connections, trap and vent requirements, and proper discharge. Electrical requirements are based on the locally adopted electrical code. The practical point is simple: appliance delivery is not the same as code-compliant laundry construction. Retail installers usually connect to existing approved hookups. They typically do not fix old plumbing, add circuits, or make a noncompliant room ready.
Our Practical Buying Shortlist
If your total appliance budget is firmly under $400, shop in this order.
First, look for a sale-priced full-size top-load washer if you have a family-sized laundry need and existing hookups are ready. A basic top-loader with a real warranty is often the best long-term value.
Second, check open-box and scratch-and-dent inventory from reputable retailers or local appliance dealers. Focus on condition, warranty, and return terms. Cosmetic damage is acceptable; structural damage is not.
Third, consider a compact portable automatic washer for small households, renters with permission, ADUs, RVs, or supplemental laundry. Choose the largest capacity that still fits your space and drain setup.

- Convenient for Your Life: Mini portable washing machine requires small space and is suitable for a family of 3-4 people, suitable for families with limited space such as RVs, camping, dormitories and apartments
Fourth, consider refurbished or used machines only when the seller can demonstrate operation and provide some form of warranty or return window. A cheap machine with no test and no delivery protection is a gamble.
Avoid choosing purely by the lowest posted price. A $299 washer that needs special adapters, extra hoses, delivery help, drain work, and repeated small loads may cost more in practice than a $429 basic top-loader on sale.
Final Verdict: The Best Washer Under $400 Is the One Your Laundry Room Can Support
The best washing machine under $400 is not necessarily the one with the most cycles or the lowest sticker price. It is the one that matches your load size, fits the route into the house, connects to safe plumbing and electrical, drains without backing up, and has enough warranty protection to make the purchase defensible.
For small households, a 1.6 to 2.0 cubic foot portable automatic washer can be a smart buy. For families, the better target is a sale-priced, open-box, or refurbished full-size washer around 3.5 to 4.5 cubic feet. For short-term use, a tested used washer can make sense if the seller is reputable and the installed cost is controlled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy a good washing machine for under $400 in 2026?
Yes, but choices are limited. Under $400 usually means a compact portable washer, semi-automatic washer, open-box unit, refurbished washer, used washer, or a basic full-size top-loader on sale. The installed cost may be higher once delivery, hoses, haul-away, and hookup repairs are included.
What type of washer is usually available under $400?
The most common new washers under $400 are compact portable models around 0.9 to 2.0 cubic feet and semi-automatic twin-tub machines. Full-size washers under $400 are usually sale, clearance, scratch-and-dent, open-box, used, or refurbished models.
Is a portable washer worth it for an apartment?
A portable washer can be worth it for an apartment if the lease allows it, the faucet adapter fits, the sink or tub can handle the drain discharge, and you only need small loads. It is not a good fit where leaks could damage neighboring units or where the drain is slow.

Basic installation often runs $30 to $200 when hookups are already present. Delivery and haul-away can each add $0 to $150, braided hoses commonly cost $20 to $60, and a drain pan may cost $25 to $100 before any plumbing work. Valve, outlet, drain, or flooring repairs can push the total into the hundreds.
Should I replace washer hoses when installing a new machine?
Yes, in most cases. New braided stainless-steel hoses are a low-cost upgrade compared with the damage a failed hose can cause. Many installers prefer or require new hoses rather than reconnecting old rubber lines.
Do I need a permit to install or move a washing machine?
A simple same-location replacement often does not require a permit in many areas. Moving the washer, adding plumbing, changing drains, adding an outlet, or modifying electrical protection may require permits and inspections. Local code rules control the final answer.
