Which? reports finding both high-quality and poor-performing machines in the £250–£400 bracket, and says some cheaper models can outperform machines costing twice as much. Use the model names below as a shortlist to investigate, not as a verified ranking: prices and stock change, and the available evidence does not establish which machine is currently the best independently tested buy under £500.
Budget washing machines to check
Mumsnet’s guide, updated 19 February 2026, grouped the following machines by intended use. These are the guide’s selections, not a claim that each is currently available below £500 or has been independently tested in the same way. Check the current delivered price, product specifications and independent test evidence before choosing.

A guide’s category or a high headline spin speed does not establish cleaning performance. Which? says its overall washing-machine score is based on test results that include cleaning, rinsing and spinning. Its stated method runs three test wash cycles for each machine and programme, then up to two additional cycles if a relevant discrepancy appears. That is a more useful kind of evidence to look for than feature count alone.
Choose capacity for your real laundry
Which? says 8kg is adequate for many medium-sized UK households; 9kg and 10kg are also popular sizes. Capacity usually refers to the maximum load on the main cottons programme. Other programmes may take less, so a quick or delicate cycle may not accept the full stated drum capacity.

- Think about the loads you wash regularly, rather than buying the largest drum simply because it is available.
- Check the manual’s load limits for the programmes you expect to use most.
- Remember that a larger machine can cost more to buy and run; a large capacity is useful only if your laundry habits make use of it.
Compare energy use without overlooking cleaning
The UK A–G energy label is intended to help compare efficiency, but the rating is calculated mostly using the 60°C cottons programme. Which? calculates its own energy-cost comparisons using 40°C washes, so the figures answer different questions. Which? also warns that an energy-efficient model can perform poorly at cleaning. Consider consumption alongside cleaning, rinsing and spin results rather than treating the letter grade as a quality score.
Which?’s 2026 estimate puts annual washing-machine costs at around £27 to almost £120 under the October 2026 energy price cap. In its comparison, a 7kg model averages about £53 a year and a 13kg model about £92 a year. Those estimates assume four washes a week with an 80%-full cottons load; your bill will vary with the machine, programme, load size, frequency of use and tariff. The figures are not a guarantee of what a particular household will pay.

Measure the space and the delivery route
Which? describes a common front-loader width of about 59.5–60cm, with depths ranging from 40cm to 70cm. Measure the available space, including the route through doors and hallways, before ordering. Allow about 7cm behind the machine for inlet and waste pipes, and check whether the controls or door surround project beyond the stated body dimensions.
Freestanding and integrated machines are not interchangeable fitting jobs. Integrated models need to fit the cabinet and door arrangement and generally involve more involved installation. Confirm the exact dimensions and installation requirements in the manufacturer’s documentation for the model you intend to buy.

Include delivery, installation and removal in the £500 limit
The ticket price may not be the full cost of getting a working machine into your home. Delivery, connection, removal of an old appliance and recycling may be charged separately. Which? lists service examples from Currys, Argos, John Lewis and AO, but charges and terms can change and may vary by postcode. Check the retailer’s current service options and final checkout total before treating a machine as within budget.

- Price: current delivered price, plus any installation or removal charges.
- Fit: freestanding or integrated type, width, depth, height, pipe clearance and protruding controls or door surrounds.
- Capacity: cottons capacity and limits on the programmes you will use.
- Performance: independent cleaning, rinse and spin results where available.
- Efficiency: energy and water consumption figures, along with the energy rating.
- Spin: spin-drying efficiency class as well as maximum rpm.
- Practicalities: comparable noise measurements, warranty and service terms, delivery, fitting and old-machine removal.
Wi-Fi, a long list of programmes and a high spin-speed number can be useful features, but none substitutes for evidence that the machine cleans and rinses well or fits your home.
