The best thermos cup depends on how you drink and carry it: commuters should prioritize a secure lid and cup-holder fit, while desk users may prefer a simpler drinking opening. Vacuum-insulated mugs and tumblers can hold hot or cold drinks, but “all day” is not a universal promise—retention claims vary by model and test conditions.
What to look for in a thermos cup
Retention claims and test conditions
Compare a brand’s published hot- and cold-retention figures only as specifications for that model. Starting temperature, fill level, how often the lid is opened, and ambient conditions can all affect the result. Brands also use different test methods, so their numbers are not a shared, head-to-head comparison.
Capacity and shape
Choose capacity around your usual serving and refill routine. A larger cup holds more, but its dimensions and shape can affect portability. Check the specific model’s measurements and whether its maker says it fits a car cup holder; capacity alone does not establish fit.
Lid, drinking style, and cleaning
A closure that works for carrying may feel different to drink from than a simple open or flip-style lid. Check how the lid opens, whether the maker conditions a leak claim on a particular closure position, and the product’s own care directions. The available product information does not establish a comprehensive cleaning comparison across these models.

How to interpret the published retention figures
Thermos Icon
Thermos describes the Icon as keeping drinks “cold for up to 20 hours and hot for up to 5 hours” using double-wall vacuum insulation. These are Thermos’s manufacturer claims, not results from an independent shared test. The leak claim is specifically conditioned on the slide-lock being closed. Thermos Icon product specifications.
Zojirushi SU-BA36 and SU-BA48
Zojirushi’s ratings use hot water starting at 203°F (95°C) or cold water starting at 40°F (4°C), measured in a 68°F (20°C) room. The figures are controlled product specifications, not a guarantee for every fill, lid-opening pattern, or ambient condition. Zojirushi Stainless Mug SU-BA36/48 specifications.

Thermos Stainless King
Tom’s Guide reports that its reviewers evaluated the Stainless King for capacity, comfort, stability, opening and cleaning, weight, quality, leaks, and temperature at two, five, and ten hours. Those are review observations for the tested item and method, not Thermos’s specifications; the research cited here does not establish a specific measured temperature to quote. Which design suits your routine?
For a hot-drink commute
Prioritize a closure designed for carrying and verify the model’s dimensions against your cup holder. Thermos says the Icon is cup-holder compatible and leak-proof with its slide-lock closed; treat both as maker claims. Zojirushi says its GoCafe SM-VH series fits most car cup holders, but check the exact model and your vehicle before buying.

- Sturdy Grip: The subtly textured grip ensures a secure hold, ideal for on-the-go use

For coffee or tea at a desk
A simpler drinking opening may be more convenient than a travel-focused closure if the cup will stay upright on a desk. Decide whether you need the smaller 12 oz SU-BA36 or the 16 oz SU-BA48, and use the maker’s retention figures as a model-specific reference rather than a promise that every drink will stay at a particular temperature.
For both hot and cold drinks
Look for a model whose manufacturer publishes both hot- and cold-retention information, then weigh capacity and lid style against portability. The Icon’s published “up to” durations and the SU-BA series’ timed temperature ratings describe different products under different conditions, so they should not be ranked as if they were measured in one test.

Choose by your priorities
- Most useful for a travel-focused tumbler: Thermos Icon, if its 18 oz capacity and slide-lock lid suit your routine.
- For a compact mug: Zojirushi SU-BA36 at 12 oz; the published ratings include temperatures at one and six hours for hot water and at six hours for cold water.
- For a larger Zojirushi mug: SU-BA48 at 16 oz, with its own model-specific retention ratings.
- For cup-holder fit across several sizes: Consider the Zojirushi GoCafe SM-VH series, checking the particular model and warranty terms.
- For a separate review-tested option: Consider the Thermos Stainless King only after reviewing the specific testing and product details; reviewer results should not be mistaken for brand specifications.
A question about a thermos that stays hot but remains comfortable to drink from also appears in a 2026 r/pourover discussion; it is an example of the trade-off, not a measure of how common the concern is. Reddit discussion.
