A thermos can carry hot water to warm a separate baby bottle, but it is not a safe way to keep prepared breast milk or formula warm for hours. For expressed milk on a trip, use an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs; for formula, follow its label and local preparation guidance.
What a baby thermos canโand cannotโdo
Think of a travel thermos as a way to carry hot water, not as storage for prepared milk. A flask-and-beaker warmer lets you place a separate bottle in hot water to warm its contents. This is different from leaving milk or made-up formula in a thermos and expecting it to stay at a safe temperature.
For perishable baby food or milk, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says not to use it if it has been without refrigeration or a cold source for more than two hours. FDA guidance on handling breast milk or formula recommends an insulated cooler for transport.
How to warm a baby bottle on the go
Formula does not need to be warmed. The FDA states, โFormula does not need to be warmed.โ If you prefer to serve it warm, follow the formula label and use a safe warming method; never microwave a bottle, because uneven heating can create hot spots. The FDA describes warming a bottle in a pot of water, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises warm running water. With the CDC method, keep water out of the bottle and nipple, then test the temperature before feeding. See the FDA guidance and CDC formula-feeding guidance.

Breast milk can be served cold or at room temperature; warming is optional. To warm it, keep the container sealed and use warm water or warm running water. Do not microwave breast milk. Once warmed or brought to room temperature, use it within two hours, according to the CDCโs breast milk storage and preparation guidance and travel guidance for breast milk.
A travel warmer that uses a thermos and beaker
The Philips Avent SCF256/00 is one example of a travel bottle warmer designed to warm a separate bottle using hot water from an insulated flask and a beaker. Philips says boiled water in the flask stays hot for up to six hours and can be used to warm multiple bottles. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent performance test. Check Philipsโ product information and product instructions for compatibility before buying: the instructions list limits, including Philips Avent breast milk bags and 2 oz/60 ml bottles.

What to compare when choosing one
- Method: Does the product warm a separate bottle in hot water, or is it simply a flask for carrying water for preparation?
- Compatibility: Check the manufacturerโs listed bottle dimensions and restrictions rather than assuming every bottle will fit.
- Capacity and packing: Consider the flask size, beaker design and how easily both fit in your changing bag.
- Care and handling: Follow the productโs cleaning instructions. When using warm running water to warm a bottle, keep water out of the bottle and nipple.
- Feeding plan: If you are transporting expressed milk, prioritize cooler space and frozen ice packs instead of hot-water retention.
How to transport expressed breast milk
Use an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs to transport expressed breast milk. The CDC says this method can keep milk stored for travel for up to 24 hours; this is a cold-transport allowance, not a recommendation to hold milk warm. See the CDCโs breast milk guidance for handling details.
Do not use a beverage thermos as a substitute for a cooler when transporting milk. Thermos says its FUNtainer bottles keep beverages cold for up to 12 hours, but also advises against keeping dairy in them for long periods because of spoilage risk. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent tests or a safe-storage recommendation for baby milk. Thermos also recommends preheating vacuum-insulated products with hot water for temperature retention; that does not make a flask suitable for storing prepared milk warm. See the Thermos FAQ.

Carrying hot water to prepare formula: guidance depends on location
Some caregivers carry hot water to prepare powdered formula rather than warming a prepared bottle. Follow the formulaโs instructions and the health guidance where you live; recommendations can differ. For example, Norwayโs Directorate of Health describes a travel method using boiled water in a thermos and says the water should be at least 70ยฐC when mixed with powdered formula. It notes that some flasks may maintain that temperature for up to seven hours, depending on ambient temperature. This is Norwegian guidance, not universal advice. Read the Norwegian Directorate of Health guidance and follow the applicable local recommendations.
