It is explicitly not for hot liquids. For hot contents, the Thermos Kids Insulated Food Jar is designed for food—not drinking—and its maker claims up to five hours of hot-food retention. Choose by what he’ll carry, then check capacity, lid operation, backpack fit and the exact model’s temperature limits.
Choose a bottle for drinks and a jar for food
“Thermos” can mean either an insulated drinking bottle or a food jar, but those are not interchangeable. The Thermos 12 oz FUNtainer is a cold-drink bottle. Thermos states that it keeps drinks cold for up to 12 hours and says it is not for hot liquids. Do not use it for a hot beverage.
The Thermos 10 oz Kids Insulated Food Jar is for food such as soup or pasta. Its manufacturer claims it keeps hot food hot for up to five hours and cold food cold for up to seven hours. It is not the drinking bottle to choose for a child who wants to sip a hot drink.

The Zojirushi figures are product specifications, not a direct comparison under the Thermos products’ stated conditions. The SW-KA specification page identifies the products as food jars and says they must be used within the US and Canada. None of these manufacturer specifications establishes an independently tested cross-brand winner.

How to pick one for school
Start with what goes inside
- Cold water or another cold drink: The FUNtainer is the directly relevant option here, subject to its stated cold-only use.
- Hot lunch food: Consider a food jar, such as the Thermos 10 oz jar or one of the listed Zojirushi sizes.
- Hot beverage: The sourced FUNtainer is unsuitable. Verify that a specific bottle’s manufacturer explicitly permits hot liquids before choosing it; the food jars above are for food.
Match capacity to the child and bag
The FUNtainer holds 12 oz, Thermos’s food jar holds 10 oz, and the Zojirushi jars are available in 10, 14 and 18 oz sizes. More capacity may mean a larger container in a packed school bag. Thermos says the FUNtainer fits most elementary-school backpack side pockets, but check the actual backpack and loaded bottle rather than assuming every pocket will fit.
Check whether he can use and clean the lid
The FUNtainer has a covered straw operated by a push-button lid and an integrated carry handle. Thermos describes its 12 oz version as best suited for ages 3–10. Consider whether the child can open and close the lid independently and whether a straw is a good fit for his drinking preference. Thermos lists the bottle and food jar as top-rack dishwasher safe; follow the exact product’s care guidance and clean removable straw parts as applicable.

What “all day” means here
“Up to” is the maker’s stated maximum period, not a guarantee that a drink or food will stay at a particular temperature for every school day. The Thermos claims are not accompanied here by a matching temperature-at-time test condition, while Zojirushi publishes six-hour temperature ratings with specified starting water temperatures and room temperature. Since the methods and intended contents differ, the durations and ratings should not be treated as a like-for-like ranking. For the most dependable choice, use the exact product guidance for the contents you plan to pack.
